Romantic, cosy and bursting with charm and character, this detached stone cottage has oak beams, exposed stonework and doors leading to patio with garden furniture, barbecue and glorious fell views.

Would recommend to friends and family.

Stanley Ghyll Cottage is a delightful small cottage, suitable for 2 people, in the beautiful Eskdale Valley. It's well equipped, comfortable, with good Wi-Fi, and a great place for a long weekend escape. It's within easy walking distance of a nice pub, scenic water mill, and the Eskdale-Ravenglass small-bore railway (worth a trip!). There are great walks in the area and it's not far from the stunning Wast Water area. The host has gone out the way to provide a good information booklet containing, not only detailed information about staying in the cottage, but also nearby activities - much appreciated. All and all, being able to come back to this comfy cottage after a day out was a real pleasure.

Perfect seclusion in the perfect location.

This was our third stay in Bridge Farm Cottages and our second in Stanley Ghyll. We love it even more each time. My husband suggested I tone it down a bit in this review (I went on at length last time) lest everyone wants to go and we can't get in again - I shall not heed his caution. The tranquil joy of Boot restores the soul, and this is the perfect cottage in which to do so - its detachment and aspect away from the others, together with its private garden, are ideal for the introverted wanting-away-from-everyone traveller. That the velux looks out towards Dalegarth Station and you hear Lal' Ratty's whistle from the garden and see his steam as he sets off is just magical. Don't be put off by size - it is small, but very well formed: we never feel that we're tripping over each other and there is space for boots and walking clobber etc. The kitchen's storage space is actually pretty impressive for the size of cottage and the fridge and freezer generous (we fitted in a week's food and drink, no problem - stop at Booths in Ulverston en route). The Boot Inn next door was fantastic this time - really superb beyond-gastro-pub-quality food, beautifully prepared, and with a great vibe; we also popped in for a post-walk pint. We used our car once, for Crinkle Crags (ascent from Wrynose Pass - wholly recommended), but otherwise all our walks started from the doorstep, including Green Cragg, Miterdale, Eel and Stony Tarns... which was just joyous. Greg and co. have set everything up perfectly and we were hugely gratified that the few constructive suggestions that we'd made last time had all been implemented since - that's really impressive host service and means I have none to make now (except I couldn't for the life of me find a pair of scissors...)! The extensive pre-arrival info and welcome book in the cottage tell you all you need to know about practicalities and are totally straightforward so there are no surprises or mismatched expectations (e.g. there's no mobile phone signal at all - they tell you that before you go, and have got great broadband for WhatsApp etc instead). It must be very frustrating for them when people haven't read and heeded their meticulous guidance. Many thanks once again - if we can beat the rush, we'll be back, for certain!

Excellent stay very comfortable and cozy. Everything we needed there.

Cottage was quaint, comfortable clean and very well equipped with a nice private garden. It had everything we needed. Lovely views. The Boot Inn was excellent for food. Pity there wasn’t a small shop just with basics but all in all great stay

Thank you for your lovely review. We recommended guests use the well stocked Eskdale Green Stores just 5 minutes away which is open 6.5 days a week and only closed Sunday afternoon.

The outdoor furniture needs replacing and a better quality of toilet paper
We enjoyed our stay the area is amazing for walking and we loved the river Esk

Greg Poole replied 138 days ago
We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay, the amazing walking and beautiful River Esk. We are sorry you feel the toilet paper was not of sufficient quality. We do buy good quality mainstream branded paper from hotel and cottage suppliers. Regarding the garden furniture, it is rustic to go with the environment. We will check it and renew it if necessary. Best wishes from all the team at Bridge End Farm Cottages.

We had a lovely stay in this charming cottage: small but perfectly formed.
The cottage is small, but is very well appointed. We particularly enjoyed the cosy lounge upstairs and the private garden was perfect for breakfast or a pre dinner drink, weather permitting.
We were only staying 3 nights but visited both the village pubs for dinner. Both were excellent: local beers, good food and friendly staff.

The cottage is tiny but the space is used well to provide a comfortable experience for up to two guests.

Benefitting from not one, but two, pubs within short walking distance, the cottage enjoys a fabulous location with many walks and great views.

I would definitely recommend this place for lovers of walking and nature.

We loved this place- it’s undeniably dinky but has everything you need. It’s comfy, cosy, it’s got WiFi, sky tv, it’s got 2 great pubs on the doorstep- it’s just fabulous. The location is the best bit though. It’s out of the way but near enough, so you can get to the really busy bits of the lakes but then you can escape. Eskdale is beautiful & there were loads of walks on the doorstep (be aware if you’ve got a dog- there are sheep everywhere). The Hardknott pass is an adventure (we did it, we won’t ever do it again). A week wasn’t long enough here, we’ll be back..

This was our second stay at Bridge End cottages - our first stay in Stanley Ghyll cottages. It's a charming, warm, cosy detached cottage with its own small garden. On arrival - in the middle of a cold wet Lakeland winter - it was warm and welcoming. Its tiny, so be prepared for that, but it was roomy enough for the two of us and our whippet. Boot is an isolated location but the cottage has two excellent pubs within a few minutes walk, and both serve goodmeals. There are great walks from the front door. We will try to book again and hope to be back in the spring or autumn of 2024.

Lovely cottage, very cosy and close to two pubs.
It was a bit out of the way for us, but we still enjoyed our stay

Thank you for your kind comments about our lovely cottage which does indeed have great access to two traditional village pubs just one minute and three minutes walk away. We are in the heart of the National Park in the picturesque little village of Boot in the glorious Eskdale Valley. The scenery is stunning and we have mountains, rivers, waterfalls and lakes all close by with many of the best easy walks and big hikes in the Lake District right there on the doorstep. This is the charm of our location. We are not in Windermere or the other tourist towns like Ambleside and Keswick but they are a pleasant drive away.

A bucket list tick for us to visit the Lake District. It did not disappoint. Our cottage was something out of a movie set. The landscape, fresh air and peace were an added bonus. To stay in such an old cottage with absolutely every mod con is incredible. The location is perfect for all nearby site seeing.

We had a great time in Boot, with memorable walks just up the hill from the cottage. The cottage had everything necessary to procure a relaxing break for a couple. That cottage made me think of a doll house, as it is small, cosy and cute.

Our third stay at Bridge End cottages and second stay in Stanley Ghyll. This property is far more spacious than it looks with a place for everything. Warm and cosy in an area of the most breathtaking scenery with two pubs serving delicious food. A wonderful property to return to after walking the fells for a good hot shower. We love the riverside setting for our port and fruit cake. Great property. Booked again for next year.

After our excellent stay in Wrynose cottage last November this one was a bit disappointing. A few niggly things detracted from the stay.
The bathroom light above the sink was always on no matter what we tried.
There was no toilet paper which Amy quickly updated us where to find some.
A lack of cleaning products in the kitchen.

The bed was excellent.
TV and Wifi good.

Overall a good stay. When we come back we will use the Wrynose cottage again.

Stanley Ghyll Cottage is an absolute Gem of a find.

It's a beautiful little get away cottage. Cosy and snug with everything you need.

It's quirky and comfortable and clean throughout. The garden area is walled and so quiet. The river flows past gently and the birds sing, you can completely relax here, it's like another little world.

Lots of walks to do if you fancy a trek or just a short walk. We found a beautiful little church, was open so we could go in and take a look.

The Boot Inn does absolutely fantastic food. Very friendly and welcoming owners and staff.

We had a fabulous time at Stanley Ghyll Cottage and we highly recommend staying here.

Thank you for a perfect stay. Will be back

We loved this cottage! It is the smallest place we've stayed as a couple, but works perfectly - the way it's been done out with discrete spaces (especially the upstairs snug - a real hit) makes you feel like you're moving between rooms and aren't 'on top of each other' (my husband's knee injury after a big walk meant we spent more time at the cottage than anticipated). There's also so much light - sitting at the breakfast table each morning looking out at the birds was a joy. A total bonus is the walled garden (with apple trees!) - we were very fortunate with the September weather and could sit out for lunch and on an early evening looking up at the fellside: so beautiful. Being detached is such a boon, and the orientation of the cottage, plus aforesaid garden, means that you feel completely private, which suited us to a t. The cottage was well equipped with what we needed, though 'one extra' of a few things for a full week's stay would have been ideal (D/W tabs, toilet roll, etc.), plus a couple more tumblers (crockery and cups etc. otherwise very generous). This was our second visit to Bridge End Farm Cottages and we shall certainly return - last time we really enjoyed it (in Hardknott); this time we fell in love with the place. Booking and communications were completely straightforward and very prompt, with much appreciated flexibility about our arrival day; all instructions provided were super-clear (e.g. regarding driving route) and importantly accurate (e.g. there is absolutely no mobile signal, but the WiFi is now terrific). Boot itself is wonderful - fantastic meals at Brook House Inn only a couple of minutes' walk away, fabulous short local walks around brooks and ghylls (Stanley Ghyll obviously a must when staying here - the new upper viewing platform is astonishing) as well as ideally placed for starting a big walk over to Wasdale, the miniature steam railway, the fascinating Eskdale Mill literally next door, a special shout-out for the delicious sandwiches prepared for us at the little shop, and Eskdale Stores only a short drive away to top up on a pre-arrival Booths haul. Indeed, we only used the car on one day during our stay, which was a tonic. As this rather lengthy review makes clear, whilst it's a small place, there is a lot (of excellent things) to say about it!

The cottage is detached and has a secluded garden behind it and so felt very private despite having other cottages nearby. It was perfect of my wife and I as a base to explore the local area (we enjoy walking). The Ravenglass and Eskdale railway was a short walk away as were two pubs which provide excellent food, although we did also cook in the cottage as it was well equipped. We did not use our car during our four day stay as there was plenty to see nearby. The owner was quick to respond to any queries and very helpful. The cottage is not cheap but is well worth the money in my view.

This is a lovely little cottage in an perfect location if you are keen walkers.
We spent a week with no driving just walking from the cottage every day. The scenery is wonderful.
Eskdale Mill is well worth a visit as is the train trip to Ravenglass with a walk back along the Eskdale trail.
The local pubs serve good food.
We would highly recommend a stay here.

Our second visit and once again not disappointed. Part of a group of cottages at the end of the lane in Boot this accommodation provides everything you need to enjoy your stay. Whilst we chose to eat out the kitchen was well kitted out for home cooking. The area is outstanding. Breathtaking walks from the doorstep. The outside area by the river is a wonderful place to partake in a glass of vino and watch the numerous birds visiting. The property is so warm, cosy and peaceful. Comfortable bed and good powered hot shower. There is the bonus of the Boot Inn next door serving amazing food but do book to avoid disappointment. We went home fully refreshed mentally and physically and have already rebooked for next year.

The accommodation was small but very comfortable and generally well equipped. Having access to a lovely garden was an added bonus. The only drawback is the very tight parking and narrow access. We were lucky that most of the time many of the other cottages were vacant but when they were all fully occupied it was quite difficult to manoeuvre the car into the allotted parking space. It is however a beautiful area and we hope to return to it sometime.

Stanley Ghyll cottage makes the perfect cosy location for exploring Eskdale, great walks straight from the doorstep to Scafell and the water fall that gives the cottage its name. The cottage had everything we needed and was very comfortable as well as being full of character, we even had a red squirrel visit us! Greg and his team gave excellent customer service and information before and during our stay, highly recommended and will definitely be back again.

Nice cottage, parking a little tight, lovely area, but views from inside the cottage not great. Probably would have enjoyed our stay there a lot more if it hadn’t rained incessantly

Greg replied more than 1 year ago
We are very sorry you experienced a few wet days in the Lakes. By and large it's been a good summer so that was unlucky. We are glad you liked the cottage and area. If all our guests park correctly then it all works fine so apologies if someone got the parking plan wrong. We have views for all 4 aspects from inside the cottage but I guess if it's raining then that will have obscured the view and not allowed you to open the windows to enjoy the scenery. If it was raining, nor could you sit in our lovely gardens to marvel at the fells, mountains and greenery all around.

We liked the cottage, just not the location. We felt Boot was very remote and the main road dreadful to drive

Greg Poole replied more than 1 year ago
We are delighted to hear that you liked the cottage and sorry to hear you felt our location was remote. We are in the quieter Western Lake District nestled in a pretty village (with great pubs) beneath mighty Scafell and with stunning scenery and mountains all around our little village of Boot could hardly be classed as a honeypot but that is why most of our guests come to us. We have the best hiking in the Lake District and Hardknott Pass - it's steepest road but there are other ways to get to us and these are on our directions. Most of our guests are happy driving our little lane to and from Boot, Eskdale Green village, Wastwater Lake and the other delights of the Eskdale Valley.

We have never been to Boot or explored this side of the Lake District. What a little gem of an cottage with it’s own little garden tucked on the side. Had everything you needed and so quiet. The pub right next door served such great food and you can’t hear any noise from it. Walks to the waterfall was fabulous and to the Steam Train for a trip to Ravenglass. We had such a brilliant long weekend. Totally recommend.

Stanley ghyll Cottage turned out to be the perfect choice for our Diamond wedding anniversary. The location was ideal for walks high and low level, sightseeing and a a very good choice of Inns within walking distance Only used the car once which was a bonus. I asked my husband where he wanted to go for his 60th birthday. He said " away from everything and everyone." So I booked this cottage which seemed to fit the bill. It was a year later that we managed to get here due to Covid. Eventually I showed him a picture of Stanley Ghyll Cottage and he remarked "we're staying there?"
Well he loved it. The cottage is based on an "upside down house" with the TV lounge on the upper floor and bedroom & bathroom downstairs. It is suprisingly spacious. The Kitchen is well stocked and even has a dishwasher. We eventually got used to the induction hob! The bathroom is stunning and the shower had very good water pressure. I found the King size bed a little lumpy but despite that I slept very well. Could have been the mountain air! It was lovely waking up to the chirping chaffinches. We even saw a red squirrel bouncing over the wall outside the cottage. The garden was a suntrap on the good weather days and lovely to relax in at the end of the day.
I would throughly recommend visiting the 13th century Eskdale corm mill just around the corner from the cottages over the packhorse bridge. We also enjoyed the ride on the Eskdale to Ravenglass steam train starting from Dalegarth station down the road from Boot. Opposite way is Harknott Pass, the steepest road in Britain. Wast water is well worth a visit if you enjoy dramatic scenery. Unfortunately Stanley Ghyll waterfall itself is fenced off due to a rock fall ( opens June 2021?) This is a good excuse to come back!

Superb, as ever.

Lovely little cottage-had everything we needed, from pans and rice strainer to both oven and microwave. Thoughtful touches like fresh milk in the fridge, as well as usual coffee and tea sachets appreciated. We stayed in Stanley Ghyll. Loved the period look with modern fittings for convenience. Spring flowers around the doorways looked gorgeous in the sun. Shame the mill is still closed due to covid ,but we still had a wander around and watched the waterfall and local wildlife- cottage has a very pretty location. It is rather quirky and ideal for a walking holiday- plenty of pretty walks nearby and easy access to Wastwater and other spots if you are a brave driver on the steep twisty roads! Clean, quiet, comfortable and really charming. An ideal spot to get away from it all and just enjoy spectacular scenery. Perfect for photographers -we took loads. Highly recommended!

Lovely cottage, will stay again.

Really nice cottage. Loved the walled garden. Great position.
Only improvement would be more 2 more mugs, glasses, and set of cutlery so there is enough to cover a day so dish washer goes on once a day .

Perfect location for what we wanted. Quiet and beautiful location, absolutely charming and clean cottage with just the right amount of amenities and space. Cosy and cute! We are so happy we booked this as our honeymoon staycation.
We would have loved to have been able to swap towels halfway through our week without disturbing the contacts if possible but contacting the cottage managers was very easy regardless. Thank you for the perfect stay.

We had a great stay in the Stanley Ghyll cottage, it was our first visit to the lakes and we could not of picked a better spot. The cottage was lovely, it was nice being detached and on our own. The only thing I would say is there is not really a view from inside the cottage to sit and look at, we were lucky with the weather and able to take advantage of the lovely garden for our pre dinner glass of wine!
Being close to a couple of nice eating places was also nice, bit disappointed the Stanley Gyll waterfall was closed not the owners fault but a little update in the places to visit would have helped.
We would definitely book again and recommend to friends overall a excellent place to stay.

Beautiful location with access from the cottage to lots of wonderful walks and The Eskdale Trail is great for Mountain Biking across to Ravenglass. Cottage is small and perfectly formed, every detail is spot on. There are in fact a cluster of cottages surrounded by a lovely garden and plenty of outdoor space. Views are amazing, there's a restored working watermill two minutes walk away and the two village pubs are highly recommended; both less than 5 minutes walk away. We only booked the day before we arrived and had lots of emails too and fro from the owner to make sure we had all the necessary information, on arrival we got a very warm welcome. Would absolutely return to this stunning, unspoilt and very beautiful part of the Lake District National Park.

This is an excellent cottage in the village of boot. We were made to feel welcome from the moment we arrived. Cleanliness was excellent and Greg was always happy to pop round and fix any issues we might have had.
The kitchen and bathroom were both modern while the overall character of the original building has not been lost.
Perfect for those looking to retreat into the lakes for a short break. Would definitely stay again!

We have been visiting Boot for over 10 years and can honestly say this was our favourite stay. The cottage was ideal for us as it was detached and the walled garden was beautiful. The property is well equipped and of a high standard. We're always quite fussy about the beds and have to say the bed here was great quality and firm. We met Greg who was very helpful. We will definitely return for longer than 6 nights next time. Thank you to the whole team.

Our 4 week stay in Stanley Ghyll cottage was exactly what we needed, it is a really unique and very cosy unit in a perfect location. Minimal use of a vehicle required, lots of great Inns within walking distance, great bike rides, walks and hikes of varying degrees of difficulty right out of the door, amazing scenery, great people in the neighbourhood businesses. With a long stay, we were glad to have chosen Stanley Ghyll cottage as it is a little separate from the rest and afforded great privacy. We loved it.
