We spent a lovely week in the cosy Drumlach apartment at Colonsay House. The garden views were quite delightful, especially the beautiful trees, scrubs, flowers & wild layout.
This island is a dream location with gorgeous beaches & great scenery.
The apartment needs a bit of TLC - bedroom needs new pillows & the kitchen requires more equipment.

The Drumclach Apartment is in the attic of the house and needs a lot of heating when the weather is cold outside.
The rooms look over the private garden of the house. Nice woodland walks around the house.

We stayed for 3 nights and were glad we could move on to Islay. This appartment has uncomfortable chairs, beds are short, no firewoord for the stove, no information opening hours restaurants, shops, postoffice etc.

Very strange that general store closes the moment the ferry arrives.

Concluding: visitors are not very welcome on Colonsay?

The Drumclach apartment comprises a double bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a modest (perfect for two people) living room, off which there is a small kitchenette. It has wonderful views over the gardens of the main house and is within easy walking distance of Kiloran Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in europe. It would have been given 'excellent' scores, had it not been an apartment (cleverly) carved out of the former servants quarters of the main house, which has inevitably led to certain compromises.

This was our first visit to the island, and this was a great location for access to the beautiful beaches. Not having a car with us, it was a bit inconvenient for the shop, and we had to ask for lifts (with which the owners family and staff were very helpful), but once we had worked out the opening hours and hired bikes for ourselves that worked really well.

The island is spectacular and the land well looked after by the owners. We loved the garden.

Great location close to a beautiful beach!
Cycleable distance into Scalasaig, e.g. for the shop, restaurant, ferry.
Interesting large old house with beautiful grounds. Only £4 for adults for access to the extended grounds, which we enjoyed doing on our final day on the island in between check out time (12noon on a Thursday) and getting the ferry (6:50pm departure).

Small but cosy apartment with lovely views.
Tiny kitchen but with almost everything you could need.
The bathroom only has a bath (shower head is available but isn't on the wall) and a sloped ceiling. This makes clean ups after beach days a bit more difficult.

We would return as there is very little wrong with the apartment for the price. Overall, very comfortable and cosy!

We only stayed in the apartment for one night (we had a night on the island with no accommodation due to the Calmac ferry fiasco). The apartment was lovely - in fact it was much nicer than the more expensive cottage we had stayed in for the rest of our visit. The only reason for marking down comfort slightly is that you can't really shower - there is a shower attachment in the bath, but the sloping ceilings mean you can't stand up, and there's no screen or curtain, so it was back to the 70s and washing your hair in the bath. Otherwise lovely.
One thing that would have been helpful is some information on what areas of the grounds residents are able to use. We assumed the gardens were out of bounds, but then saw other visitors out there - when you're in an apartment it would be nice to have somewhere to sit out in the sunshine.

A quiet corner of the fabulous Colonsay House. Very quiet and cosy wee space, yet amply big enough for the two of us for the week…..wish we had stayed for two! Will very likely go back in the future. The flat, the access , the courtyard, the parking and the location all just work and it’s a great base, especially for a small island.

The rooms itself are OK: obviously quite old and showing their age. There were a few simple things could be improved e.g. very cheap washing up liquid and toilet paper supplied (only 1 roll of the latter). I found the bed slightly uncomfortable, while the electric heaters I found inefficient (you are warned upfront anything about £20 worth of electricity per week must be paid for). The alternative heating, a coal fire, was prone to smoke being blown into the room during windy gusts outside, while the smoke it produced I found a little ironic given the owners have electric vehicles charging up outside which have "zero emissions" proudly written on the side. The private gardens around the house look nice although it seems a little strange those staying in the apartments are charged to visit them during the two days a week when they are open. The island itself is a wonderful place to explore and brimming with wildlife - we saw eagles (Golden and White-tailed) most days and an Otter fishing.

We were on Colonsay for the folk festival, and really enjoyed our stay at Drumlach. The apartment is a 10 minute drive from Scalasaig, and close to the beautiful and peaceful Kiloran beach. The apartment is well equipped and furnished, and makes for a very comfortable and cosy stay. The view over the gardens is very pleasant. The staff were welcoming and helpful. It is quick and easy to get around the island to enjoy the many fine walks on offer, including the tidal walk to Oronsay. Scalasaig has a great pub, general store, gin distillery and micro brewery, gallery, and the excellent Pantry cafe. Recommended.

Small apartment had lovely views over Colonsay House Gardens, well equipped kitchen and comfortable bedroom, had the character of your favourite aunties house is the 1960/70’s and the wooden toilet seat and shape was amazing, was a nice base for exploring Colonsay & Oransay and flexible arrival & departure times to suit the ferry was ideal. Weather was nice but one window could not be opened as it had a large very active wasps nest in the aperture of the window, we had to persuade some wasps to leave the apartment via the other windows, did not faze us but could imagine it would be far from
Ideal for some other guests, that would be our only criticism but would use this apartment again if we visit Colonsay again ….. Jim & Julie

Lovely characterful accommodation. Lovely views over garden of Colonsay house. Very well equipped for its size. It is up 2 flights of stairs which might be an issue for less mobile. One chair is a bit saggy - mattress too to a lesser extent. Overall really lovely place to stay.

Nice cosy apartment for 2.
Kitchen well appointed and provided everything required for home cooking.
Iincluding a large fridge with small freezer microwave and hob and oven.
Our only concern was really with the double mattress in the bedroom which clearly needed replacing with huge dips in the mattress in places and provided a less than comfortable sleep!

Well situated, comfortable and quiet. Not particularly cheap for the size of the flat and the pick-up service from the ferry was very expensive. As we had no wifi in our flat for most of our stay (despite efforts on the part of the office) a gesture in the form of a small reduction would have been nice.

We traveled to the island on business, intended to stay one night and ended up, due to the weather having to stay five nights. The apartment was clean and well equipped , it was quaint with the coal fire, the windows were a bit draughty but the curtains were heavy and this helped. The only heating , with the exemption of the coal fire are electric heaters, these were fine despite the cold weather . The staff, like everyone you encounter on the island were very helpful, very accommodating and friendly.

Great location, only a few minutes cycle ride from the lovely beach at Kiloran Bay.

Small and cosy with a coal fire to provide heat and entertainment!

Two flights of stairs to climb to the apartment - the second set are quite steep - which is great for burning holiday food calories but not if you have hip or knee problems.

Situated right at the top of the house this lovely little apartment was a perfect place to stay, it's thoughtfully appointed with a great selection of kitchen equipment, comfy bed and coal fire for chilly evenings. A short walk from the golden sands of Kiloran Bay it's a great place to set our hiking from and we enjoyed cooking in the evening (the Balnahard mutton and meat from the shop is great). The bathroom is beautiful but the shower doesn't really do more then dribble, however it's an excuse to have a bath now and again (or a dip in the sea if you're brave!)
If you are planning to stay for a while I'd advise bringing fresh fruit and veg, aside from that the shop has a good selection of basics (although fresh bread sells out fast) and the hotel offers good pub food and the superb local beer.
Looking forward to returning as soon as we can!

This apartment has great views onto the house gardens and its huge trees - well worth visiting for a small fee and for a grand view of where you're staying. It's very well equipped with all you need for self-catering. Due to the great weather we had, we didn't need to use the open fire, but kindling and coal was supplied and there was free use of washing facilities in a separate laundry room. Wifi also available.

Drumclach is a charming place to stay, an ideal base for exploring the island. The decor makes it feel very homely, and it is lovely to wake up to the sound of birds in Colonsay Gardens. A warning of the number of steps up to the apartment would be .helpful especially to older people. Wonderful once we got there. Bright, clean, well appointed ... but oh so cold. Coal fire much appreciated and the specially comfortable bed was a bonus. Island was magical and a dream fulfilled. Thank you.

A truly charming apartment. Just right for a couple in terms of space and facilities with the benefit of that indefinable ingredient which turns it into something extra special. The ability to have a coal fire, which we did, lovely views across the gardens from this the second floor combined with the character of the entry way all supported by the modernity of a well equipped kitchen, bathroom and T.V. and for us a comfortable bed created a lovely atmosphere which enhanced our enjoyment of the Island itself. Highly recommended by us. Go and enjoy.

We had tried to book for the Colonsay Hotel, but that was full, so we opted for this single bedroom apartment, which was fine in most respects. Only issue was that we didn’t have a proper shower but for the two nights we spent there, we could cope. We ate breakfast and dinner at the hotel which worked well, with the staff there being very friendly with good service and most acceptable food. Overall, we really enjoyed our trip to Colonsay, a most beautiful island.

We spent a week in May on Colonsay in the inner Hebrides - we have never visited before and had no idea what it would be like. We arranged our stay through "Colonsay Holidays", who were excellent throughout. Pre visit enquiries where answered promptly and helpfully, and all details about the accommodation were provided.
We stayed in Drumclach apartment, on the top floor in a wing of the Georgian Colonsay House, in what we guessed must once have been the servants quarters. The little apartment was lovely, had everything we needed to be comfortable for the week. It was spotlessly clean too, which should be expected but isn't always the case in holiday rentals. Our only suggestion for improved comfort and a better green profile would be to install a wood stove, rather than have the smoky open coal fire.
Luckily, we only needed to light the fire once, as we enjoyed a glorious spell of weather, with wonderfully sunny days to enjoy the amazing beaches all around the Colonsay coast. It is the most beautiful place, and blessedly quiet too. We often had the beaches all to ourselves. Can't recommend a stay here highly enough.

My husband and I were delighted with the apartment. Everything required was provided, and all appliances worked perfectly. The view from the flat overlooking the garden was a delight. It was a real pleasure being able to walk in the surrounding woodland. Lynette in the office was very helpful and welcoming.

We chose Drumclach as a base for our holiday on Colonsay because we were looking for a small property which would suit our needs. We have stayed in Colonsay Estate properties before and in particular in a Colonsay House apartment. We have always been well satisfied. we enjoy exploring the Island on foot and by bicycle.
The property is on old property but the furnishings are in keeping with the property, not modern but entirely functional. The bed is extremely comfortable (we have always found this to be the case with the Estate Properties) with modern bed linen. The small kitchen is fitted with modern appliances and has everything one would need (including a dishwasher) for a comfortable stay. We had mixed weather during our stay and we really appreciated the coal fire in the lounge in the evenings. Kindling is provided in the cost as is the coal. Although on the top floor the bonus is a good view over Colonsay House Gardens and the morning sun shining in through the windows (at least some of the time!). Value for money.

A charming apartment to stay in with period features including great open fire and lovely views over Colonsay House gardens and woods. On the second floor with no lift so not good for those with mobility problems but beautiful outlook and peaceful. Kitchen is well appointed (apart from no washing machine though there is a communal laundrette downstairs). Due to sloping ceilings the shower is only a "crouchy" one attached to the bath taps but it's fine for those who are spending plenty of time in the sea! The rooms are small but comfortable, and most of the furniture is attractive and suits the style of the house. This is a perfect base for a couple (or single person) wanting to explore Colonsay, or just to stay in reading in front of the fire, enjoying the views and the tranquility.

Flat overlooked Colonsay House gardens and beautiful Cyprus tree. Worth seeing the gardens and sampling the lovely lunches and cakes a couple of days a week when they are open. Comfortable, smallish, with light on both sides of the flat. Bathroom clean, but with shower attachment that doesn't really work. Friendly management. Expect to be mostly off grid, and bring a map of the island, or ask for one at the office.

An excellent place. I really enjoyed it. Spacious. Clean. Quiet.

It's about 1.5 miles from Scalasaig - where the shop etc and ferry pier are located. Its about the same distance from the "airport".

I rented a bike from Archie - the local bike hire mannie - worked well.

My husband and I stayed at the Colonsay House in the Drumclach Apartment for six days in May for our honeymoon and enjoyed it very much. It was a cozy, clean, and comfortable apartment close to Kiloran Bay and not too far from the port town (a few minutes drive by car or 30 min by bike--but be warned it is very hilly to and from). The gardens attached to the Estate were beautiful and we enjoyed the peace and quiet of the countryside, reading books by the fire on rainy days and going out for hikes to visit the remains of old hill forts, or a walk along the beach on the days with good weather. We will certainly be back and would absolutely stay again at the Drumclach apartment.

I had a great stay in Drumclach Apartment at Colonsay Estate. The apartment had everything I needed. The bed was super comfortable. My only discomfort was that I felt rather cold much of the time (but that's not much of a surprise in early spring when it is cold and stormy outside).
There were many beautiful places in the vicinity and I enjoyed exploring the island by bicycle and on foot.
The staff were very accommodating and helpful - especially since my stay was extended for 2 extra days due to weather conditions that prevented me from leaving the island according to my original plan.

Colonsay is one of Scotland's hidden gems - the island has the most beautiful scenery with golden beaches, wildlife, peace and tranquility. To allow us easy to all of the island, we chose Drumclach for its central location and were not disappointed - all of Colonsay can be easily explored on foot from the apartment. The flat had everything that was needed to enjoy the time away. We would recommend this to anyone choosing to visit Colonsay.

I was terribly disappointed in Drumlach cottage apartment. Firstly, nowhere on the website does it tell you it's on the 3rd floor! If it did I would never have booked it. We arrived on the ONLY ferry (one a day) with very confusing instructions from an email. We had absolutely no idea where to find this place. After driving around we went to the hotel and enquired. They pointed us in the direction. Still had trouble because the cottage I was looking for was not a cottage! YOU REALLY SHOULD ALTER YOUR WEBSITE. Here we are in the middle of country with loads of open space, with cottages dotted everywhere but no Drumlach. We finally found Colonsay Apartments (?) and still no sign which one was Drumlach! We met a lady (guest) who told us where our apartment was, and the key was in the door. Would it be too hard for someone to meet first time visitors? To, at least, make you feel welcome? We had plenty of instructions on how to pay for electricity! In fact three different instructions! All useless! But not a sole came near us while we were there. The laundry was closed, the garden was closed, the cafe (?) was closed! This was JUNE!
The stairway was dirty, and the place felt very second rate. And we felt VERY unwelcome
There are other places on this beautiful island much better.

Drumclach is a wonderful quirky place with cosy lounge and a slim bath. Ok there's no overhead shower and waiting for hot water takes you back to childhood but that's what it's all about. Love the fire and available kindling and coal. Also the laundry room, how lovely is that?

The views of the splendid gardens are stunning.

Amazing location, so near the best of beaches on this wonderful island. Everyone friendly and helpful.

The apartment has a nice size for 1 or 2 People. It has a living room with an open fire, a bedroom, a kitchen and a bathroom.
From the windows you have a view at the garden of Colonsay house which is spectacular.
A few things you might wanna know:
1. For electricity you need to buy powercards from the office (which is in the same building). I needed 6 for a rather cold week in april.
2.There is a bathtub but no useable shower (due to a slope above the bathtub)
3. For hot water in the bathroom you need to pre-heat water which takes an hour for a (rather) hot bath.

We have not wanted to tick the boxes above because our expectations of the Colonsay House holiday flats probably do not match the norms of Upfrontreviews. We return year after year because they give us exactly what we want for an extended family with two grandparents, and three children each with their own families. The location is delightful, the flats provide are clean and comfortable; the owners are very considerate, and the grandchildren love the place.

We were delighted with the flat. If we had realised just how good the island shop was we would not have taken supplies with us. As this was an attic flat it would have saved us a lot of effort. The shop will deliver before arrival. Gorgeous views over stunning gardens. We used the coal fire in the evenings. No TV or radio and no reception on EE mobile so complete rest from the modern world. Weather was very kind so not so much reading done.
A tall person has to be carefully getting out of the bath because of sloping ceiling. No shower but shower attachment in bath. All in all we had a very relaxing holiday on a beautiful island.
We are in our seventies.

For two people this is a well equipped little flat. No TV , no wifi, no distractions from the beauty of Colonsay, which is the silence itself.
Well enough appointed, the flat was clean and bright in mid summer, when we visited. The shower arrangement is not capable of being fixed over the bath, and this was a bit disappointing. Otherwise the flat served its purpose, we were visiting friends, and it was a very comfortable place for the two of us during our short stay.
We would return again, however the weather is the key element of any holiday on Colonsay and we were very lucky to see sunshine three days out of four!

When we did pop into the office to say hello, Katie could not have been nicer, Colonsay is certainly laid back! And we very quickly got used to Colonsay time!

Colonsay is a friendly isle in a world without time.

This is the third visit to Colonsay House from the United States for my wife and I - this time we came with our full family of two married daughters and their families -eleven all told. We stayed in Drumclach, Stables, and Turnigil. The journals in the flats are full of repeated visits by families over the years and there is a reason for this. For those who understand and cherish values of beauty, solitude, and happy family times, Colonsay House is a special venue to find. We will be back, I am sure.

We left the car in Oban and came over with our bikes - good decision - we covered the total island road system at least twice over in 4 days, plus a lot of walking. We didn't know at the time but the house has a handy shed for bikes. Great location and nicely furnished attractive apartment. It's on the 2nd floor, but the hike up the stairs is rewarded with a lovely view out over the garden on one side and beyond the courtyard to hills behind on the other.

We very much enjoyed our time on Colonsay and Drumclach was a cosy place to stay and in a good situation for the rest of the island. Well appointed and full of character. It is situated in the grounds of Colonsay house and we overlooked the lovely garden. Weather was good on the whole but the apartment was fairly chilly which meant feeding the electricity meter quite often. We found 20-25 pounds covered it for the week. It was good to be able to use the open fire for which the fuel is free.
Do go round the gardens when they are open and sample the generous and yummy cakes in the little garden workshop cafe.
