We always look forward to our time spent at St John’s point
It’s so peaceful and the location is great to get away from the busy streets in our hometown
We can relax and enjoy the tranquility of the area

Exactly as I imagined and hoped for.

The property was lovely and the kitchen was really well equipped. My only concern was for the welfare of the two little ponys in the paddock at the back who didn't seem to have access to water. I filled their water barrel. Perhaps someone could just check this as an animal welfare concern at the site.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 26 days ago
Thank you for your great review of the property. I hope I can put your mind at rest with a little feedback on the two lovely ponies. The local farmer that owns the ponies took very unwell and was admitted to hospital during your stay, his son appreciates you gave the ponies some water, between them both, they normally visit they ponies every day and I can assure you these two are very spoiled ponies and well cared for. The farmer has a lovely story of the ponies and why they are so special to him and will tell this story to our guests if they are about.

Our stay was helped by excellent weather.
Four of us enjoyed abandoning the car and walking as close as we could get to the coast for 2 days as well as reading books.

Thank you for your excellent review of this amazing location. There are some great books in the cottages, especially the lighthouse themed books. I hope you can return again soon

We spent 2 wonderful nights at St.John’s Point lighthouse. It was something we had wanted to do for years and it did not disappoint. The sense of stepping back in time, watching the light in the evening, the nearby beaches, seal spotting and taking the time to pick up a book or play board games with the family was a much needed and very enjoyable experience. Suzan and Paula were very helpful house managers.
We had a really lovely time and would love to have stayed longer.

We spent 6 nights at St Johns Point Lighthouse and it was so good! We are a family of 4 and both our teenager and our "tweenager" enjoyed the stay. The location is fabulous for exploring both Ireland and Northern Ireland and we saw all the sights we needed. The best part of the visit was being at the JP Sloop (we spent 3 if the nights at the Ketch). You really can't believe it is as good as it looks, but it is. The history, the atmosphere, the comfort, the calm and the surrounding area with the magnificent Lighthouse and all the history around it just is amazing. This location can't be beat and should definitely be tried! Very clean and very helpful staff. Would definitely go here again. We even got to be there during a small storm and it made it even more special, no problem for this building with some wind. The ponies in the yard were also very popular and endearing.

Thank you for your great review. Its great to read your teen & tween had a great experience at St Johns too, there is lots of exploring outside the gates, great for all ages when the tide is out.

The location is very fine, in an attractive area of County Down, with views across to Slieve Donard and the Mournes. The lighthouse cottage, right beside the historic yellow-and-black striped lighthouse at St. John's Point was very comfortable and nicely-furnished, and all the facilities were in excellent condition. Unlike the previous lighthouse cottage we had stayed in, it was 2-storey, and the stairs to the bedrooms were quite steep, but with a good handrail on one side, especially useful on the descent. We greatly enjoyed staying in such pleasant and stylish accommodation, but also using it as a base for exploring a fascinating part of County Down, especially the old harbour villages and towns of Killough, Ardgass and Strangford, the last a particularly attractive place to visit, with some good restaurants,

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 114 days ago
The mountain and the sea views from this property is magical. The cottages are very old, designed by George Gilpin, who designed lots of lighthouse cottages for the Commissioners of Irish Lights, we have kept the character in the restoration of these cottages to get a genuine feel of how the last lighthouse keepers lived back in the day. The quirky staircase has the typical red line down the middle of the treads to guide people around the tight corners, an old feature rarely seen in this day and age.

The truth is what you see is what you get . A lighthouse cottage to yourself with private parking away from internet and the world . Family of 3 for 2 nights , we read cooked good food and walked the area and done lots of photos . The cottage is beautiful extremely clean and everything you need to cook with is in house . Just bring your own food and drinks . Susan and Pauline the cottage keeps are just fantastic in every way . Nothing was a problem for them . We left the cottage as we got it . Again thank you to everyone involved in the caring of out history of lighthouses from the bottom to the top . I recommend this location to anyone just wanting to reboot their life or simply chill out , great rock and field walks along coast and places of interest locally . Also thanks to Grace in main office

From start to finish we had an amazing experience. Suzan and Paula were just so lovely to deal with and gave great advice for local amenities and activities. The accommodation was so well kept and there was ample heating if needed. Didn’t need to bring anything except the food and drink we wanted. Oil, salt/pepper, teabags/coffee were there to get us though the first day, just bring milk. Even got tablets for the dishwasher.
The accommodation was so comfortable and had been decorated to the best standard. The sites of the lighthouse and surrounding areas were stunning. Really couldn’t recommend this place more.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay! we booked both cottages for a family getaway for a weekend in January 2024.
Both properties were immaculately clean and cosy, and very well equipped with everything we could possibly need.
The ladies Suzan and Paula were so kind and welcoming, and they were very helpful by taking us around the cottages when we arrived to make sure we comfortably set up for our stay.
The location is spectacular and so special.
We were blessed with beautiful sunshine but really cold nights, but that didn't matter because the houses were warm and toasty.
We took many photos and will take away the best of memories.

The cottage is lovely, spacious enough for four people and nicely decorated. The surroundings are full of character, with the lighthouse, houses, foghorn, some old boats and machinery building housing the old-fashioned mechanisms. A wonderful place and the calm, measured sweep of the lights was strangely comforting at night time. The location is marvellous with views to the Mournes, and we were extra lucky with calm bright weather in early January. I wholeheartedly recommend St John's!

We had a lovely 2 nights at Sloop.
The house was immaculately clean, warm and comfortable and Suzan and Paula very welcoming. The benefit of old fashioned sash windows was hearing the howling wind and rain as we snuggled up in comfort. Couldn't recommend a stay in a Lighthouse more highly, truly magical places. This stay was our 5th lighthouse, and Sloop didnt disappoint. We will be back. Thank you.

Booked both cottages for a family get together. We had a fabulous time. The cottages had everything we could possibly need and more!
Highly recommend as an excellent base for a family get together.
Highlights of our stay included a swim at Rossglass, lunch at Wackozs outside Downpatrick, a stroll along Minerstown Beach while the children made a sand village and the icing on the cake .. watching the beam from the lighthouse light up the darkness at night!
Definitely a five star stay. Thank you ILT, Suzan and Paula for making a stay at this fabulous place possible.

We stayed a lovely weekend at the start of November . It was very sunny and calm despite the recent storms and flooding. The sound of the surf lulled us to sleep.
I was hoping for more wintry stormy weather having stayed there in the summer but no such luck.
The night sky and stars above the turning light beam were magical. Never ceases to enchant.

We stayed 2 nights over Halloween with the wind and the rain howling around the lighthouse and cottage on our first night adding to the Halloween atmosphere. On the second night we walked the lane to soak up a true sense of the splendid isolation with only the rotating illumination of the 5 beam light from the lighthouse strobbing around us, glinting off the white of the waves crashing nearby. Just wonderful respite for the soul!.
During the day despite the road flooding we made it to Downpatrick, not very far away, and with waterproofs on we walked the Quoile Estuary from the Killyleagh Bridge Car Park to the Stone Harbour Wall, but had to stay on the road footpath as the river estuary paths were completely flooded over. As the morning rain eased we walked up Slieve Patrick to see the huge Granite Sculpture of Saint Patrick, and vowed to return on a bright sunny day to take in the incredible distant views that we knew were hiding beyond the low mist. On the way back we took in Struell Wells, another magical heritage site.
The cottage was such a cosy and welcoming retreat full of heritage character, yet with all you need in the kitchen, and provided the wonderful experience you can come to expect with Irish Landmark Trust, and the House Manager was lovely and so helpful.
Already thinking of booking another Irish Landmark Trust for next year!

Everything was fab, very clean, all mod cons.

I did bump my head a few times in the master bedroom due to dormer ceiling. A warning about this is noted in house manual.
Still, moving the bed away from the sloped wall would avoid such mishaps. Ditto the location of the dresser.

We have stayed in many of these properties and this one, St John’s Sloop, is in the top three. Location was great for a day exploring St Patrick Centre.

The weather was cool and blustery but that’s autumn in Ireland! Lucky for us, the rain held off!

Highly recommended for couples.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied 347 days ago
Thank you for your lovely review. This is a very old cottage hence the low ceiling heights upstairs. The main bedroom furniture pieces have been placed in the safest locations but it does take a little getting used to. There is lots to do in this area whatever the season in this landmark location.

Wish we had booked a longer stay!

This is a fantastic location if you enjoy nature, the sea and fascinating history. The property is beautifully laid out, comfortable and the welcome from the housekeeper was lovely. And of course the bed was very comfortable.

Thank you for your review. Unfortunately the external condition of the compound is out of our control, we do though take great care of the internal areas. We hope the external areas are due to a touch up soon, the salty sea air does affect the painted walls very quickly but should not affect the quality of your stay.

What a place! I can't begin to tell you how magical it is staying here. There are two lovely shetland ponies on site that kept us company for the week. We were blessed with good weather so we were able to enjoy views as well as the night sky. On a clear day, you can see the Isle of Man. Lots of birds and I think we spotted seals in the sea as well (bring binoculars!). But the real magic happens at night when you are under the slow-moving beam of the lighthouse, I can't describe how amazing this was! Don't worry, the beam doesn't hit the houses at all, so you are unaware of it unless you are outside.

The house itself was kitted out perfectly, we cooked for ourselves most days and the kitchen was fully equipped with everything we could possibly need. Having stayed in many holiday homes over the years, it was a relief to use appliances that don't require an engineering degree. It was this type of detail that made the stay so easy.

The house was neat and spotlessly clean, we couldn't have asked for more. Our thanks to Suzan and Paula, who made us feel very welcome both before and when we arrived.

It is so important that these historical buildings are kept in such loving good repair, and even more amazing that you can stay here.

The surrounding area is filled with things to do both for kids, teenagers and adults. This coastal area is absolutely full of scenic spots. Belfast is less than an hour away, so we had a day in the city as well.

Thank you for a super review! As most of or period properties have super thick walls and are in very rural locations and are unable to secure a wi-fi signal. Take the time to enjoy conversation with family and friends, or pick up a good book, and relax.

This was our first time in a lighthouse cottage and we loved it! The peace and quiet of the place are amazing and the character of the property made everything more interesting.
We will return for sure!

Absolutely beautiful spot. Total tranquility and fabulous dark skies at night. Very thought provoking and relaxing at the same time. This place was always special to us both and became more so after watching a series on Amazon prime called, the Great Lighthouses of Ireland. A must watch for anyone who is considering a short break in one of these beautiful landmarks. The cottage itself was very well maintained and very comfortable and warm. We slept at night with the bedroom window wide open just listening to the wind and waves as we drifted off. Highly recommended

Thank you for your lovely review. Many of our lighthouse properties are on RTE's Great lighthouses of Ireland. It was lovely to read this programme is what inspired your stay. I hope you can visit another of our amazing lighthouses, they all have great history and great views.

We had an absolutely lovely stay. The cottage was just lovely. It had everything needed for a very comfortable stay. We were met by Suzan the house manager who was very welcoming and explained the history of the lighthouse etc. The cottage itself was very comfortable while still keeping its character and charm.

Thank you for your review. We try not to overcrowd the rooms, If I remember there is a towel stand in the shower room, as well as the bathroom. If the weather is favourable there is also a washing line outside that will try your towels or give them an airing.

I booked the stay at JB Sloop as a Valentine’s Day surprise for my husband. We are in Ireland for the first time since our honeymoon in 1982. The stay at the lighthouse was the highlight of our trip! The cottage was very comfortable, and it was fun to imagine the lives of the families who once lived there.

We had a wonderful stay at JP Sloop. The property was impeccably presented and met all our needs. We slept exceptionally well in the very comfortable beds. My only criticism and I guess one that building preservation orders would prohibit changing anyway are the views from the bedrooms. A large dormer style window (s) in the apex of the roof would completely transform the bedrooms and of course would afford really spectacular views from such an amazing vantage point. Although the existing velux and gable window do provide a lovely view, they are very small and completely out of proportion with the vast roof area. My only other suggestion ( which again I'm sure every other guest has requested, is a tour of the lighthouse) This wasn't a disappointment as we were aware ahead of the stay that access wasn't an option available to guests. Overall though, a very memorable stay.

Lorraine - Operations Manager replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for your review. I do agree beautiful large windows would be amazing at St Johns, to catch a better view of the sea. Its a shame large windows in very old properties are rare. When there was last a lighthouse keeper living on site he did let some guests tour inside the lighthouse, Henry is missed at St Johns but there is a lovely picture of him inside the property. I hope you can visit another of our lighthouse properties again soon.

Our stay at JP Sloop was so special. The location was even more stunning than we hoped for. The lightkeeper's cottage was the ideal accommodation to complement the magical setting. It was tastefully finished and so comfortable, such a nice space to spend time in. Suzan and Paula gave great advice and really helped make our stay so perfect.

Our weekend break at JP Sloop was amazing from start to finish, which began with a very warm welcome from Suzan. The accommodation exceeded our expectations. It was well equipped and the quality of the furnishings and bedding were of an exceptional standard. The lighthouse themed literature and pictures dotted throughout were a lovely touch, not to mention the well stocked library for both adults and children. The blankets were an added touch to cosy under. The lighthouse beam as we sat in the living room in the evening was a beautiful sight and the sound of the waves and wind added to the experience. We didn’t miss tv or Wi-Fi one bit and it was actually very refreshing to ‘switch off’ from that. We can’t wait to return to take up post as light keepers again next year …… it’s on our list! The Irish Landmark Trust are doing an amazing job in preserving these lighthouses and their buildings. Thank you

JR Sloop is very well located with an almost 360' sea view. The cottage is well equipped to a high standard and is comfortable and warm. It's a good base for visiting the many places of interest in the neighbourhood . Being so close to the lighthouse is an experience in itself and watching the light illuminating the sky on a clear night is most memorable. Suzan and Paula provide a friendly welcome and many suggestions about places to eat and places to visit. All in all, a great place and somewhere quite out of the ordinary.

We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend stay at JP Sloop. The lighthouse and the views surrounding it are stunning. There is limited mobile data in the area, but the lighthouse keeper's cottage is well equipped with family games and books, so we were not in need of our phones! On our second day it rained heavily, but the cottage was very comfortable and warm, so it was actually a treat to take in the atmosphere of the wild coast while snuggled up with a cuppa and a good book. The house manager Suzan was incredibly kind and quick to respond to any queries we had. Overall I would absolutely come back to St. John's Point!

This is a very spacious cottage in an unusual location in the lighthouse compound, very well equipped and comfortable. The lighthouse beam does not disturb at all and appears to sweep gently out to sea. It gives you an inkling of the remoteness of being a lighthouse keeper, while in fact it is only a mile or two to the nearest village, and an hour's drive from Belfast. The area is beautiful and unspoilt - Mourne Mountains, Strangford Lough and beautiful beaches.

We had a fabulous time at St. Johns and JP Sloop.
We loved it for lots of different reasons. It had a remote feeling which I loved.
The cottage was homely and we all settled in happily.
The weather was wet on our first evening. On our second evening it was dry and we really got to appreciate the working lighthouse.
We explored the nearby towns.

Our family spent the most wonderful weekend at the Lighthouse. Excellent and unique facilities and warm, friendly and helpful advice and guidance on local amenities from Suzan Smyth the House Manager. Suzan brought a personal touch and was generous with her time and information.
A beautiful part of the country, enjoyed in glorious sunshine by all of us. The accommodation was spotless and lovingly tended with respect to the history and contribution of this important lighthouse.
Everything we needed for easy self catering was provided, and more.

I highly recommend a visit for a romantic escape or a fun filled family trip. We will be back!

Wonderful location and beautiful views of the Mourne Mountains. Sloop was warm and very well equipped. Pity that the water temp for bath wasn’t hot enough for a relaxing soak after great walks in the Mournes (shower and all tap temps were fine). Suzan was very helpful with anything we required pre and during visit (she’s going to look into getting bath water temp fixed ). Would definitely come again and recommend.

Booked Sloop at St John's Point, before we knew of storm Eunice and got storm Franklin too as a bonus. The weather was wild at night, but not a thing could we hear inside the cottages thick walls. We visited the Down County Museum at Downpatrick which took a good few hours to explore, then went on the ferry from Strangford Lough to Portaferry, to get to Exploris which is just round the corner from the ferry terminal.
It was too early in the year to visit inside Castle Ward, we love visiting National Trust properties, but note there's also has a Game of Thrones Winterfell tour at Castle Ward (needs pre booked) .
My mum has always wanted to stay at SJP so it was a lovely couple of days for just the two of us together.
The cottage was warm and cosy, the beds were lovely and comfortable, the storm outside diddnt even waken us at night.
Couldn't find fault with the cottage, our greeting by Suzan on our arrival, or our wild surroundings. The full moon across the sea at night over the water was an absolutely spectacular sight.
Lovely time had by us both

The location is just wonderful and almost sets you up for arriving at JP Sloop. Going through the main gate gets you a bit further but stepping through the entrance to the house was just perfect. The feel of the place, the quiet in the house, the sounds of the shore and bird life and the wonderful lighthouse, particularly as evening fell and the light came on, made this place something special. The interior is kitted out and decorated to a very high standard and is well kept.

Lots of rocks and ponds to investigate on the shore. We had a week of wonderful weather in August and winter woud be a different experience but would be just as good I think.

Finally, the house keeper made us feel very welcome and was very helpful in providing information about the house and surrounding area.

This house has been refurbished beautifully whilst retaining the integrity and authenticity of the building. The facilities are very comfortable, location wonderful and the lovely lady who lives next door gave us lots of local tips and suggestions. Nearby Castle Ward estate is well worth a visit and a ferry trip to Portaferry was a lovely way to see the coastline. Irene in Landmark Trust was a pleasure to deal with as usual and Suzan the house host was very helpful.

We booked the cottage to be near family who live locally. We were not disappointed even our kids who are 7 & 9 loved it although there is no wifi or tv! The cottage is very warm and dry and the bedrooms very spacious as is the kitchen. Having a wet room (with great shower) was good for drying wet suits etc. The kitchen was just like at home, well equipped, used and clean. It showed that this was a home for 181 years as opposed to a purpose built holiday let. Yes, we could be critical of certain oddities, like the animals in the compound or the heavy entrance gate but that would defeat the purpose of being able to stay in a lighthouse keepers cottage.

A wonderful experience staying at the lighthouse. Great communication from Suzan. Extremely clean and comfortable. A few days away from technology and closer to nature. A great beach only a 5 min drive away. Once in a lifetime holiday.....

We expected a quiet break in a remote and solitary location and we were not disappointed.

However we were pleasantly surprised to find that we were not as completely cut off from human contact as we had expected. Ann who resided in the adjacent cottage couldn't have been nicer throughout our stay. Her presence made up for not being able to meet our host, Suzan, who was otherwise very helpful in the lead-up to our arrival. Let us hope that when the restrictions are lifted completely she will be able to meet and greet guests like before.

The location, difficult to access as it is, has become something of a magnet for visitors during the current restrictions on travel. The fine weather was an added draw during our stay and it was great to meet some interesting day trippers, like the Jaguar club who turned up one afternoon.

We visited Downpatrick only 20 minutes away and a trip to Belfast would have been on the cards if we'd had more time. But mostly we read and walked. The absence of TV and Internet helped enormously.

A bit more active than we had anticipated, but we enjoyed the break hugely and we hope to visit other Irish Landmark Trust properties in the future.

We enjoyed 3 nights here on our mini moon, and the cottage/location exceeded all expectations! The cottage is old, but tastefully restored (it needs a bit of TLC and updating slightly) but it all adds to the charm. It's big (especially for 2!) and very well equipped. The master bedroom has the most PERFECT view of the sea and the mourn mountains in the background - it is a view we will remember forever. The cottage is warm, cosy and just an ideal space to unwind and switch off. There are no distractions other than the view and Daisy the resident goat (who is gorgeous and hilarious). Ann is a wonderful asset - she is super friendly, thoughtful and very helpful. However, the location is a dream - it's more than you can imagine. With beautiful countryside and secret beaches - you are well and truly spoilt! We would definitely return and could have stayed longer! It will forever be a special place to us!

What a beautiful place! Absolutely fantastic stay at JP Sloop. Everything was perfect: accomodation, surroundings, weather, communication with Suzan... JP Sloop is surprisingly spacious and extremely cosy. The whole place just oozes charm of a bygone era. Even though the sea view is obstructed by walls surrounding property it's still impressing. Can't wait to come back!

We stayed for 3 nights at the cottage. We arrived to find everything comfortable and clean. The kitchen facilities were excellent including a microwave and cooker. We enjoyed eating outside in the sun at the picnic table, with views out to sea or the mountains if you look over the wall. Bring sunglasses - it's very bright as it's a sun trap with white-washed walls. Our child enjoyed seeing the animals around the property. We also took some nice walks in the vicinity of the lighthouse and did a trip to the ancient monument at Struell Wells in Downpatrick, though there were plenty of other places to go. The resident Ann was also very friendly. We'd definitely go back again.

We absolutely loved our short trip to JP Sloop. The cottage was the best self-catering accommodation we've ever stayed in. It had everything we needed and more - many small touches like torches in the bedside cabinets, tea bags and coffee in case you forgot your own and everything you needed to cook and clean made our visit so much easier. I expected the cottage to seem a bit damp or at least musty, but it was fresh and warm and you could tell it is well looked after.

The location is lovely too. We spent most of our time exploring the coastline with the kids and watching the beam of the lighthouse sweeping over the ground at night was magical. We'll definitely be back.

Surpassed my expectations, will be re booking the other cottage next month! Pleasantly surprised by animals at location, two ponies, chickens and a goat, made it all the more memorable but cottage needs a yard brush to clear away droppings right outside door.
Cottage warm and delightful, windows needed cleaned to enjoy the view fully, comfy beds and charming features. Maybe too many silly ornaments and outdated framed prints though.

Sloop JP is unique and very lovely. Beautifully done up, fantastic location, very nice neighbour who brought us eggs, not to mention the goat, ponies and very traditional rooster, who delivered a perfect Cock a Doodle Doo.
The lighthouse itself is beautiful and impressive, and the light sweeping across the sea and the land is great to see.
The master bedroom is spacious and comfortable; two sofas in the sitting room is nice.Very well equipped kitchen - even sharp knives!. Effective heating (it was colder outside than might be expected). No TV and limited mobile signal, but who needs them when you have that scenery and you're on holiday.
Tyrella Beach, Struell Wells (see the book by Finbar McCormack), Inch Abbey - there's so much to do locally.
Overall a fine experience. We'll be back, and quite fancy the one in Donegal too.

I could write an essay on how wonderful our stay was at JP Sloop. Myself and 3 friends stayed for a weekend of r and r. And that's exactly what we got. The lighthouse has spectacular views of the Mournes and the sea. The coast is beautiful. The cottage was so quaint and for a building that's 177 years old it was amazing. Beds were super comfy. Kitchen had everything you would need. Suzan who is the manager had answered all my questions via email about the local area and we got to see a lot thanks to her!
Daisy the lighthouse goat and the chickens was so funny. You wouldn't know where she would pop up next! Also Ann who lives on the property was so nice and helpful.
A fantastic weekend. We will be back.

We were as a family for one week in house Sloop at St. John's Point Lighthouse.
The accommodation is great: very spacious, very well equipped, very clean and of course incredibly well located.
Unfortunately you cannot visit the lighthouse at the moment. But just falling asleep with the sound of the sea under its light is simply wonderful.
The incredibly nice and always helpful neighbour Ann rounded off our stay. Many thanks Ann!
We will definitely come back and miss this wonderful place already now.

From beginning to end, everything about our stay was perfect. The standards of the accommodation, the utensils and essentials provided, the guidance from ILT staff and the lighthouse's on-site resident. We absolutely loved our stay at JP Sloop (group of 4). We spent each day taking long walks around the fabulous Co. Down coastline and reading in cosy chairs, happy to have no TV or WiFi and just to enjoy the pure fresh sea air. The house itself is immaculate and everything in it is high quality - we didn't need anything during our stay apart from food and even at that, Ann gave us some freshly laid eggs for breakfast. The little horses were the cutest things we ever saw, Rusty and Butch. Bring some carrots for them!

We spent 3 nights here and loved it. We were a family of four. It was the most restful holiday and the kids had a ball. The beach nearby was where we spent a lot of time. The local village too has a great ice cream shop! We walked by the sea rocks after dinner every evening. The cottage had everything you’d need and was so homely. No TV or WiFi made it even better. There was a selection of board games that the kids loved. We will be back again.

We spent a lovely time at the lighthouse. The apartment was very spacious and nicely decorated, the kitchen well equipped, having 2 bathrooms + toilets was a luxury. Communication and reception was very efficient and friendly due to Suzan, who was always available in case we needed anything. Meeting and spending time with Ann and her animals on the premises of the lighthouse made our holiday even more special, she adds a lot to the positive atmosphere of the place. The location on the sea is unique and any minute spent there is relaxing and a tremendous privilige. We were incredibly lucky with the weather, enjoyed undertaking short trips to various locations, Ann gave us lots of good advice on things to to. We would return anytime as well as recommending the location to anybody else.

Excellent cure for stress of daily living and jet lag... fabulous get away for my family!!!

I wanted to be in a special place for my 50th birthday and I choose this lighthouse. The place has a soul, you can feel it in the air. There are hens, ponies and a goat going around. Ann's living there and is very kind and helpful, she made us feel at home. Wonderful landscape all around. Something to remember forever!

This weekend was a surprise present on my birthday from my wife and I enjoyed it immensely. St John's point Lighthouse cottages are situated right at the sea on a quiet part of the Co Down coast. My wife and I really relaxed for our 2 days reading walking and probably eating a bit too much!
My favourite moment was when we returned to St John's after going out for dinner on the Saturday evening. I will never forget the spectacular sight of looking up at the stars and the magical sweeping beam of the Lighthouse. Amazing experience.

We had SUCH a wonderful time at St John's Point! From the warm welcome we received, to the beautiful setting, to the house goat...it was splendid. The house itself is beautifully maintained and provides a unique insight into an historic way of life - it was so special. I would highly recommend a stay here.

We'd a great time at JP Sloop. The house was beautiful and well looked after. We were blessed with the weather, so we got plenty of time to explore the locality. The location was spectacular, with stunning views of the Mournes across the bay, the coastline and we could even spot the Isle of Man in the distance! We would highly recommend it and hope to visit again.

With a little caution we ventured to St. John's point in January 2019....mainly concerned about the weather and whether or not the cottages would be warm. Not only are the beautiful authentic cottages warm but everything about our stay was warm.....from the greeting of Daisy the goat, to the smiley welcome of Susan, the little touches of tea and biscuits awaiting our arrival, to our lovely friendly neighbour Ann. The light here is magical, the lighthouse majestic, and simply being in touch with nature is wonderful. The cottages are fully equipped, beds comfy, scenery spectacular...a real get away from it all treat. Would highly recommend a visit and we will definitely be back.

We stayed for 2 nights in October, with amazing weather. It’s lovely and quiet around the lighthouse, we explored the rock pools, went for runs and cycles both days. The house itself is very cosy and well equipped, everything you could want in the kitchen. For day trips there is lots to do nearby. We will be back for sure!

We loved the cottage, which is incredibly charming, well equipped, and very clean. Comfy beds and great kitchen. Be sure to stock up beforehand as it's gloriously isolated. There's a cat, a pygmy goat, chickens, the beam of the lighthouse, the sound of the waves - it's magical. Very highly recommended

We had a perfect stay at this breathtaking location, enjoying the spectacular views, peace and family time. The children took to the board games and particularly enjoyed the neighbour's animals including Daisy the goat, who would appear on the window ledge looking in! Exceptionally appointed, comfortable and clean. Excellent hosting by the Landmark Trust. Lots to see nearby. Take your binoculars for wildlife spotting!

If you look for something special, love the sea and to feel the spray on your skin while you enjoy the vastness which lies right in front of you, than this is the place to go. Recently redone the lighthouse keepers homes are really comfortable and well equipped. Suzane keeps it all in perfect shape and is lovely in helping with tips and to get your settled in. We stayed in the Sloop where you have a nice seating area, a bathroom a showerroom, a kitchen with seating are and where a door leads you to a table outside where you can hear the surf litterally being 20 meters away. Upstairs is a super comfortable masterbed room and a second nice one with two single beds. At night you can see the stars through the roof windows. Easy walks along a stunning coastline to the next village where we had a pint. Castle Ward and Mount Steward were amazing to visit and close by. You can even swim at high tide in the very small little "harbour" next to the lighthouse. I jumped in from the rim and felt like 15 again : ).
Certainly a place to return too.

Ps. Next door is the second lightkeepers home called the Ketch. Also very lovely and it allows to see the sea while sitting in the living room.

Three friends and I came up from Dublin for the weekend and stayed at JP Sloop. Paula met us at the cottage and showed us around. A baby lamb had been born about 20 minutes before we arrived so the neighbor, Ann, showed us the newborns and told us a little about the history of the property.

The sea surrounding the cottage and the lighthouse itself is breathtaking. Hands down the most beautiful place I've ever stayed. The cottage was immaculate and spacious with more than enough room for the four of us. The kitchen had everything we needed to make all of our meals there.

St John's Point Lighthouse is also an excellent jumping off point for outdoor activities in the area. We walked in Tollymore Forest Park and climbed up Slieve Donard that provided views of the surrounding valley, streams, and hills. Note that this is the Irish coast so if it's sunny at the Lighthouse, that doesn't mean its sunny everywhere!

If you come and stay here, you must walk around the lighthouse after dark. The light shines out 50 nautical miles and is simply breathtaking. If you're a runner or like to spend time outdoors, I would also recommend getting up to see the sunrise over the ocean and the pink clouds against the lighthouse.

We stayed in the Sloop which is much like the Ketch. Both are very well maintained, clean and comfortable. Lovely walks to nearby villages. Downpatrick town has everything you need to do a shop and much more. Recommend St John's Point highly.

This was a beautiful house, warm and cosy on a cold weekend. We were warmly welcomed by Suzan, who included a pot of her excellent home made jam. House was well furnished and equipped with games, washing up supplies and kitchen cupboard essentials (do bring binoculars if you have them). Castle Ward and Dundrum Castle were good for kids. The view of the Mournes from our bedroom window was stunning. Overall, we had an excellent weekend.

Delighted to hear you had such a lovely, warm welcome and that you really enjoyed your stay in Sloop. It sounds like the kids and adults all had something to enjoy. The Mourne mountains are quite a view to wake up to aren't they!? John's Point is such a special location and we're happy you agree. We hope you can come stay with us agin in the not too distant future.

Our family stayed in JP Sloop and had the most wonderful time. We had a lightening storm which was magical. It's the kind of unusual holiday that's only improved by bad weather!! Sleeping within the arc of the lighthouse beam iis a special experience. The beds were so soft it was like sleeping in a cloud. The house itself was so cosy we were reluctant to leave. Thank you ILT, Henry and Susan.

Thank you for your review. It is true that whether it is glorious or thunderous weather a stay at a lighthouse station is pretty incredible (I prefer the stormy conditions myself I have to say). Delighted to hear that you had a lovely stay.

Unforgettable weekend away, beautiful house, amazing location, all the comforts you could want. We didn't want to leave. The first of many visits to lighthouses in Ireland. Already planning the next trip!

Great to hear you had a nice stay at Sloop and that you hope to visit more lighthouses around the country. I highly recommend you check out Great Lighthouses of Ireland - http://www.greatlighthouses.com - if you have a particular interest in lighthouse visits and stays at other lightkeeper's cottages. Hope to welcome you to another property soon.

A beautiful location with very well renovated accommodation, well equipped comfortable and cosy. Made all the better by meeting the completely fascinating, welcoming and wonderfully friendly Henry and his lovely wife who live in one of the cottages on site. Only complaint was that we couldn't stay longer. Highly recommend.

This is indeed one of the Great Lighthouses of Ireland. We enjoyed our stay at the cottage very much and especially loved the views from the dining room and from the master bed room. Perfect base for daytrips to the Mournes. We would highly recommend this cottage and look forward to come back one day.

Fantastic stay at JP Sloop. Loved everything about he house, I was a relief lighthouse keeper in the past and it's great to see how these buildings are being restored. Brought back many memories in my teens where I was stationed at a couple of different lighthouses. A unique holiday for our children, and lots to see and do within the locality, Mount Stewart, Castle Ward etc... The house is magical and the setting remote enough, but 50 minutes into Belfast. Loved the 'wet' room, and the bedrooms and cosy and lovely to hear the wind and waves at night. The beam of the light is lovely, the one thing I don't miss is the fog horn. Will be back John's Point again.

This is a beautifully restored lighthouse-keeper's cottage - very well furnished and in a wonderful location. While it looks and feels remote, in fact the property is easily accessible and a good base to explore from. We had an easy day trip to Belfast and other outings around the Mourne Mountains and around the shores of Strangford Lough - the western shores in particular have a number of gems to discover. It is an easy walk along the road into Killoch for local shopping but quite an arduous one (the route is not always very clear) back along the shoreline on the Lecale Way. Bird life is plentiful over the sea and on shore - watch out for the peregrine nesting near the top of the lighthouse! In darkness, the atmosphere is magical with the light sweeping across the bay. A lovely place to unwind.

Our experience of staying at JP Sloop was first class! The cottage was bright, clean, tastefully decorated and very comfortable - especially the bed! The interior has as much character as the surroundings and the excitement of staying next to a working lighthouse is enhanced by all of the lighthouse literature and memorabilia inside.

The views of the sea and over to the Mourne Mountains from the master bedroom window were exquisite and it was a beautiful to watch the view change during the day and evening as the morning mist evaporated and the sun set over the water.

We were delighted to hear a knock on the door on our first night to let us know that dolphins had been spotted nearby, with an offer to come and view them through borrowed binoculars. Such a special moment during our anniversary weekend.

The lighthouse itself is just majestic and we stood in awe underneath it during the day and especially once it got dark outside and we were able to watch the sweeping beams move over our heads, from our little garden terrace. Mesmerising!

The whole experience was just magical and all the local beauty and places of interest like the early Christian church ruins, the little bays and the brilliant seafood restaurants just made our 10th wedding anniversary truly special. Thank you very much!

Everything about the stay was of the highest standard, the house is amazingly fitted, the decor is superb and the attention to detail is very high. The Irish Landmark Trust website promised us character, comfort and natural beauty at the JP Sloop - this property delivers all three! We found the property easily, well, the lighthouse does stand out! We were met at the property by our host, who showed us all over the property, explained heating and other details, and also left scones and jam for us! The property was absolutely spotless, very warm and comfortable, and with all the mod cons you'd need, including a really good shower! The location is spectacular, the sea is on your doorstep and the area is just beautiful. We didn't have wifi or tv and we didn't feel the need of either, it was a fantastic retreat. We were within driving distance of shops and restaurants, as well as historical points of interest and areas of natural beauty, such as Castle Ward, Downpatrick, Tollymore Forest Park, Silent Valley, Mourne mountains etc. The lighthouse itself is also of historical interest and a thing of beauty! We will definitely be staying here again!

We stayed at JP Sloop for four nights over the Easter Weekend. We were greeted by Suzan, the very helpful house keeper. She had prepared the cottage to a high standard, and left us some lovely home made Jam. The Cottage has plenty of room, the Double bedroom is massive. Everything you could need in the kitchen, board games and books in the lounge.

We also got to meet the visiting niece of Henry the retired lighthouse keeper. She told us all about the light house, and her memories about the light house as she grew up, the history etc. Really interesting, and it was nice of her to share time with us.

We would be happy to stay again, although if I do I would stay in the other Cottage at St John's Point which is also owned by the Landmark Trust. JP Sloop doesn't have a sea view, as the cottage sits behind a high wall shielding the lighthouse complex. The other cottage is on the other side, and has a view over the wall. If the other cottage isn't available, then still book JP Sloop as the setting is amazing, you won't be disappointed, but book the other cottage if you can.

Finally to set your mind at rest, the fog horns are no longer used. So no need to worry about sleepless nights in bad weather.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your recent stay at Sloop in Co. Down. We are glad you had a nice time and got to meet some of the locals and got some time with them. Although the fog horns are not longer in use they are checked once a month by the lightkeeper but always at a decent hour of the day I assure you. We hope to perhaps welcome you back to another Irish Landmark Trust property in the future.

Our three days in the light house keeper's cottage came about as a result of my son's favourite story book "The lighthouse keeper's lunch".In was in fact the perfect antidote to busy modern life and all of the family enjoyed our break. Boardgames, family time, reading and just escaping the hustle and bustle of busy jobs and traffic. Falling asleep with the sound of the waves on the rocks outside and the beam from the lighthouse sweeping repeatedly through the skylight was so soothing that going to bed was a novelty in itself. In one sense it felt like we had been away for a week and yet our time there flew by and we were sad to find ourselves packing up.

We had a lovely weekend in St.Johns Point. The cottage was very nicely furnished ,well equipped and cosy. The location is great-remote but not isolated with great views of the Mourne mountains and out to the Isle of man. The caretaker was very obliging and left us a nice welcome pack and the lightkeeper's niece took up up the Lighthouse tower-great views from the balcony!

The area is lovely-we went to Strangford and took the ferry to Portaferry and visited the magnificent Mount Stewart house and gardens.Nearer to home there is a nice little pub at Minerstown.Newcastle with it's long beach, restaurants and icecream parlours was a hive of activity on a sunny Sunday.

We really enjoyed the weekend and would recommend St.John's Point.

This is a great place! The Lighthouse is in a remote area and it is an absolutely beautiful setting. When you're laying in bed at night you can hear the waves crash. Most nights (when it wasn't too windy) we sat outside and enjoyed wine while watching the lighthouse's light and gorgeous pink-orange sunsets.

The cottage is very cute and cosy. It's done up really well and has everything you need (well except wifi and a TV!). The kitchen is very modern and has all necessary amenities to cook. The heating worked really well so we were never cold. The bed was also very comfortable. They've done a good job decorating the place so it looks good and has some authentic pieces.

On arrival we were met by Suzan who was very nice, friendly and accommodating. We were late to meet her due to the fact that we got a bit lost but she was very kind and flexible. She also told us everything we needed to know about the space.

There is no doubt you need a car to go anywhere. There is a nice beach but not too many walks in the near vicinity. You are also in accommodation that is attached to the part-time light housekeeper but we only saw him once in the three days. We had a great time and would definitely come back.

I stayed for 5 nights at JP Sloop, Co Down. The St. John's Point Lighthouse accommodation was beautiful!! I was originally booked for 3 nights, but couldn't bear to leave, so I booked 2 extra nights. Suzan is very easy to work with, and always responds to emails or texts quickly. Mr. Henry, the lighthouse keeper, is extremely charming and a sweetheart. I enjoyed hearing his stories about the lighthouse and learning about how he builds boats. This is a one-of-a-kind stay and I will definitely stay here again if I am in the area!!
