Wicklow Head Lighthouse has safeguarded the scenic Wicklow coastline since 1781. It is a peace seeker's haven with inspiring and refreshing views of the Irish Sea. The landscape and scenery surrounding the lighthouse provide a perfect backdrop for a unique and memorable break.

From reservation, to access to check-out...Miriam Conway - as well as
Brendan Conway - were more than gracious, informative and accommodating!
It was a privilege and a joy to experience the “Wicklow Lighthouse” its history and beauty!❤️

Well if the Scott's say so then it must be so. We are just delighted to hear that you had such a great stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. It is a wonderful property to be able to share with people and share the Landmark Experience with them. It might not feel like your holiday is anything but a relaxing indulgence, but when you stay in an Irish Landmark property, you’re part of a community that’s helping to keep heritage alive. Each of our properties has been carefully restored, but it is the guest – and all those who visit – who add the essential heartbeat that gives new life to these properties. Really hope to welcome you and your family back to stay.

A novel venue, gorgeous location. Lots of steps, be warned. But worth it. One room per level (x 6 including ground floor entrance). Lovely setting, though quite hard to heat and dining a bit cramped. These are minor quibbles for a glorious place.

Bookings Officer replied 17 days ago
There sure are lots of steps right? 109 in total to the kitchen at the very top! Glad to hear that you had a nice stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. We hope to welcome you back to another Irish Landmark property in the future. Thank you for supporting the work that we do.

Staying at the lighthouse was a unique and unforgettable experience. We have really enjoyed our stay there. The lighthouse is in good condition, maybe needs some upgrades (mattresses very noisy, poor hand-shower, and strange smell in the living room). The property manager Mrs Miriam was very friendly and very helpful.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. It is a unique experiance to stay at this property that is for sure. I will certainly pass on your notes to the Local House Manager so she is aware in case you did not mention it to her during your stay.

We had a brilliant couple of day's in the Wicklow Lighthouse and enjoyed the stunning views in all directions ! Washing up at the top was a pleasure and I also appreciated the workout up and down the stairs. Everything is beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and beds so comfy! Little touches added to the stay! Being greeted at the door with lights welcoming us and fresh flowers. This was a great place for touring from and we thoroughly enjoyed Powerscourt Gardens and Glendalough on route back to Dublin. We got to see two seals! Maybe the one in harbour being fed was same one??! I would highly recommend this property for a magical holiday.

Delighted you enjoyed your stay in Wicklow Lighthouse. You must have truly loved the place if it made washing up a pleasure! It's great that you got out to see Powerscourt and Glendalough. We took our 2 children down for a two night stay. We arrived the day before Storm Ophelia. We cannot compliment Miriam enough for her care and consideration during our stay. It is a lovely experience for children but they would need to be very comfortable with stairs. However our nearly four year old managed with no problems. It was the perfect if some what windy place to be stuck in a storm so long as you have plenty to entertain the kids. Note there is no television or wifi. The accommodation is comfortable clean and so unique.

Darren replied 46 days ago
It sounds like you had a great adventure. Being is Wicklow lighthouse while storm Ophelia was rolling in sound like a great experience. Miriam is great and we're not surprised one bit you were so well looked after. Thank you so much for the wonderful review and we hope you and the kids can come stay with us again soon.

Our stay in the lighthouse was a dream come true, and the gloomy weather was a bonus. We feel privileged to have spent time in such a unique building which has been cared for so well.

We loved the lighthouse, only complaint is we could check in only after 4:30 on the Friday and had be out by 10 am on the Sunday, not even a full 48hrs!!!!!

Great to hear you had a nice stay at the unique Wicklow Lighthouse. Arrival and departure times at very busy times of the year unfortunately must be occasionally strictly enforced at the lighthouse due to how popular it is. The House Manager only has a few hours to prepare the property (all 6 floors up 109 steps) so it is very important to ensure the same standard of welcome is offered to all guests.

Something very different and special !

Our favorite airbnb ever! Not only is it a lighthouse (amazing in itself), it's in a gorgeous location over the Irish Sea. The views are incredible from every floor and window - and it's infinitely prettier and more comfortable than you might imagine a lighthouse would be. There are beautiful walks in both directions and Miriam who cares for the lighthouse is lovely and very helpful. Vacation heaven! ️

It is amazing! All the windows tell a different story of headland, sea and sky on three sides and iconic Irish countryside on the other as you go up the staircase. Loved sitting in the window seats that the metre thick walls create. The bedroom and living level were comfortable and the kitchen had a space above it which meant for great acoustics playing the music system we brought with us as we cooked food. It was not without some physical effort to stay here - walking up and down the steps particularly -but that physical side to it is what makes it possible to imagine what the lighthouse keepers' experiences would have been like here. The walks around the headland were wonderful as well as the one down to the beach with the seals. The people in Wicklow were very friendly and we found good food and wine there. We had a sunrise over calm seas and then a night time storm and every minute was very memorable.

Wonderful to hear that your stay at the Lighthouse and in Co. Wicklow were a highlight of your trip. It certainly sounds like you had all sorts of weather which is always great fun at Wicklow Lighthouse. There are definitely a lot of steps alright - you would not want to forget anything from the kitchen in the evening time! Delighted you had fun and hope to welcome you back perhaps in the future.

Myself and the hubby stayed here for two nights. What a wonderful experience. We felt honoured to stay in such an old historical building. The lighthouse is tastefully decorated and has all the essentials required for a comfortable stay. Soaps and washing up liquid etc supplied. Bedding so comfy. It's not the Ritz but wouldn't want it any other way as it's keeping with the age of the building. There's nothing nicer than sitting looking out one of the many scenic windows watching the rabbits hop about the place and the views of the sea are stunning. Lovely walks around and Wicklow Town only ten minutes away in car/taxi. Enjoyed the steps all 109 of them, a nice refreshing G&T was well deserved at the top. If you want something different, quirky and just to unwind this place is for you.

We shared this with another couple and had a wonderful time. The views were outstanding and the hiking in the area was lovely. We were able to view pods of dolphins and seals frolicking in the waters. Our stay was lovely and if we were to do it again we would stay longer. I would not recommend this Lighthouse stay for those with young children or adults with mobility issues. There are 109 steps to the kitchen and almost as many to the bedrooms. You must be in good physical condition for all the stairs and keep in mind this is a restored lighthouse. The only drawback is the numerous people coming through the private signs and ignoring them and some even walking up to the lighthouse trying to open the door.

We stayed here 18 years ago and enjoyed it just as much this time as last.
It is well located - close to Wicklow and not too far from Dublin. The atmosphere is relaxing and Miriam and Brendan are good hosts. Their assistant always brings flowers and locates them around the house - that makes for a bright and specially warm welcome.
The weather was good and the views are amazing from the lighthouse. The walk down to the working lighthouse is enjoyable.
End!

This little gem is the perfect place to calm down and forget your everyday life.

When you arrive, you clearly understand why all locals and tourists want to go there and have a walk along the coast - it's just marvellous! You can have a 30-minutes-walk to Brides Head to see some seals or you can take your car (which you definitely need there) and drive 20 minutes either to Glendalough (lake + mountains) or to Brittas Beach (sandy beach + ocean) - every direction is a delight!
In Wicklow town there are a few nice pubs and restaurants where you get really good food for a fair price.

The lighthouse itself has everything you need, from towels to kitchen supplies and after a few days you aren't bothered by the stairs anymore ;)
The rooms are clean and spacious and although it gets quite cold during the night (due to the stone walls = no modern isolation) you have electric heaters in every room which produce more than enough heat.
The welcoming was very warm and also the support throughout the time (the WIFI wasn't working on our first days) was great and helpful.

We had a terrific time there - which was of course also because of the fact that we didn't have any rain but sun on all five days of our stay - and would highly recommend everyone to take a break from all the stress and enjoy some days at Wicklow!

The lighthouse it's self was fantastic. The location is second to none.
But....
The fire alarm wasn't working which was a major concern and constant worry for us while we were there. The fire panel was partially hidden behind a sign and it was silenced in an alarm state. We only noticed it the second day because of this.
On the ground floor the water tank burst open a few days before we arived. It had been repaired but the amount of damp in the lighthouse was very bad. There was dehumidifier's going constantly.
I understand that these things happen outside of anyone's control, however, we should have been made aware of them before the arrival. I'm sure we would have not stayed knowing there wasn't a functioning fire alarm.

Stayed here for a weekend break with friends and have to say it was immensely enjoyable.Beautiful walks along the coastline but the highlight of our stay was the lighthouse it's self. The 109 steps to the kitchen is a killer the first time!!!! It has everything you need for a comfortable stay but its the quirkiness of the building that makes it so enjoyable. Sitting in the lounge in the evening listening to the wind outside with no TV is so magical and relaxing it has to be sampled to appreciate it. Will definitely be returning. P.S. Getting up at 4.30 for a glorious dawn is well worth it!!!

We stayed two nights in the lighthouse at Wicklow Head. It is a wonderful self catering location for walks and views. We were luck to have great weather during our two day stay. It was a very authentic setting. The stairs were tough work, so holiday makers should be happy they have the energy for them before booking.

The advert had said there was Wi-Fi available. There was not during our stay- but we were happier without it.

We went as a family of 4 (kids if 11 and 8) We all really loved being in the light house and spending tîme walking around too!. It was a very seclutive and peaceful experience. We spend the day walking around beautiful parts of Wicklow and after a great warm and relaxing shower, back at the top of the world to read, eat and play cards!. We are recommending it to all our friends!.

We stayed here in late February. On the first night we were in the eye of Storm Doris and the white noise was amazing! We felt very secure within the three-foot walls of the lighthouse. The next night was very calm and the stars were shining brightly. Brendan was waiting for us on arrival and the welcome was really lovely. We also really enjoyed reading his autobiographical Irish Lighthouse Stories. We had our two teenage daughters with us and we all enjoyed a really nice walk around Wicklow Head and down to the beach. We would love to come back again.

If you ever get the chance to stay in this lighthouse, definitely do! We were welcomed extremely warmly and made to feel at home from the beginning. Wicklow is called the "Garden of Ireland" for a reason- certainly lots to do to keep you entertained. Very cosy to be wrapped up in blankets whilst listening to the wind howling and the sea outside the lighthouse! A memorable stay, will definitely be back.

Staying at Wicklow Lighthouse is an unforgettable experience. We were there for very stormy weather which was wonderfully atmospheric but did mean that we didn't get out to explore as much as we would have liked. Instead we enjoyed the novelty of life in the lighthouse - the children, in particular, had a great time roaming around. It's a very cosy set-up inside, with gorgeous views, comfortable living spaces and charming bedrooms (with thick wooden doors that meant they stayed lovely and warm). And we did manage to see some seals down at Brides Head on our last day! I would highly recommend a stay here. We will definitely be returning.

fantastic experience staying in Wicklow Head lighthouse. Lots of stairs but worth it! If you have the choice, stay in the upper bedroom - fewer stairs because it's between the bathroom and the living room, and has a lovely domed ceiling.

Thank you so very much for taking the time to let Irish Landmark Trust know how about your recent stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. We are delighted that you had such a wonderful time. I always tell people to pack a flask so they do not have to go up and down the stairs for their cup of tea. Hope to welcome you back soon.

For years we wanted to stay in this magical and robust lighthouse. We absolutely loved the tower with all its stairs and the dreamy views from the different windows. Reading the book written by the host-who used to work in different lighthouses-added an extra dimension to our stay and so did the baby seal our daughter discovered after a hike to a beautiful and peaceful beach nearby.

We went to the lighthouse for our honeymoon and discovered that it is a gem on the Wicklow coast. The lighthouse boasts stunning sea views and is surrounded by beautiful walks. Wicklow town is in walking distance and there is plenty to see along the way. Miriam and Brendan were attentive and welcoming hosts. We are looking forward to returning to the lighthouse one day!

We were lucky to have sunny blustery weather. The views in every direction were amazing. The lighthouse was decorated extremely tastefully. Everything was perfectly suited to give the impression of living in a bygone era, yet it was cozy and comfortable with good quality bed linen and everything you could possibly need in the kitchen. Even fresh lilies in the sitting room! I had expected it to be cold but thanks to storage heaters the first thing you notice going in the door is lovely warmth! Listening to Brendan and reading about his experiences as a lighthouse keeper made our stay more interesting. We had an amazing unforgettable weekend.

We really enjoyed our stay at the lighthouse, it was quirky and fun. Brendan was most helpful and welcoming and told us where to see the seals ( along with their pups) a great treat. Everyone we met was very friendly and the surrounding area is very beautiful. Wish we could have stayed longer.

I had a wonderful stay at Wicklow Head. The lighthouse was very comfortable and equipped with everything I needed for my holiday. Mariam and Brendan were very helpful and accommodating, and have well maintained the building and its contents. The grounds and surrounding walks were wonderful and I highly enjoyed the views. At night I loved sitting and watching the active lighthouse's beams sweep over the sea. Staying in such a historical structure was a great way to end my travels in Ireland and I would definitely like to return on my next trip.

We stayed with two children (6 and 8 y.o) and we all absolutely loved the lighthouse. It was fun and unique, and a great relaxing vacation. The children picked blackberries and made a pie, we visited the beach to watch sea lions and walked to the working lighthouse near by. Would make this a yearly event if we could!!!!!

The Wicklow Lighthouse is a wonderful and unique place to stay. To truly appreciate the lighthouse, the town, and the people you should stay at least a week. If you enjoy a rustic home away from home experience this is a real slice of paradise. Buy groceries in town, visit the local pubs & restaurants and enjoy the lighthouse sunsets, wind and sounds of the fox at night. If you have questions or need assistance the management is like family, always kind and helpful.

Myself, my husband and our 12 year old son spent three days in Wicklow Head Lighthouse to celebrate a 'significant birthday'. We had intended to explore Wicklow county, go for walks etc, but the Lighthouse was so special, comfortable and unusual, that we hardly strayed from it at all! The kitchen, although small, was actually perfectly formed and it was a real treat to be able to cook great food without having to walk to and fro across a large kitchen, as everything was to hand immediately. The living room was really comfortable and my favourite spot was sitting in one of the large window seats with the comfortable cushions making it a 'hide-away'. I read my book there for hours at a time, looking up from time to time to see the changes in the landscape. The two bedrooms were really clean, bright and most importantly, had really comfortable beds. The bathroom provide for vigorous showers, unlike others places in the country. The stairs winding up and down were one of the stars of the show and we loved walking up and down them seeing out the windows at such an elevated view. Miriam and Brendan were excellent hosts and extremely friendly and helpful.

What a fantastic privilege to stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. From the house manager's warm and genuine welcome to the locals stopping for a chat on their walks around Dunbar Head to the incredible sunset colours shining through the windows of the lighthouse in the evening, everything was just spectacular. The 109 steps to the kitchen are "fun" shall we say but just take a flask of tea/coffee with you on your way down and you will be grand. Rates worked out well as we spilt them between the 4 of us and I'm already planning the next stay. Well done to house managers, Irish Landmark Trust and everyone else involved for saving this special building for us to stay in.

This is an absolute amazing site with extraordinary view of the East Irish coast. A fully restored lighthouse of more than 200 years gives you ambiance and charme, but is not a modern hotel or cottage. But even for mid-seasons cooler nights the Lighthouse is well equipped. Recommended for those who appreciate a historic ambiance and a remarquable site without restrictions.

Wonderful experience both in terms of comfort and scenery.
The lighthouse bedrooms are 5 star in terms of comfort , the room was very warm (February stay) and the bed was just perfect.
The shower was hot and strong. The living room was lovely and cosy, the kitchen was able to handle a fairly formal 3 course dinner for four with ease and fun.
The walks down to the working lighthouse were very interesting especially at night, I have never been at eye level with a lighthouse beam before a real experience and one for the books.
We intend to visit more of your property's

I would highly recommend the Wicklow head Lighthouse
It is one of those experiences that everyone should do at least once
Miriam was a great host and really helped to start off the short break and a great note.
The panoramic views from the magnificent 200 year old Lighthouse where are stunning
We would also recommend the walk along the cliffs into Wicklow.

All in all, probably the best short holiday with ever had

From the moment we arrived we clicked into relaxation mode. Our house manager, Miriam, was warm and friendly. She was a true professional who's love for the lighthouse was very obvious from the outset. After giving us "the tour" she recommended various places of interest and local restaurants. We stayed at the lighthouse for 3 nights in early February. While we were out and about during the day sightseeing both my wife and I looked forward to returning to "our lighthouse" at night. The sight of it all lit up as we approached each evening was just brilliant. As the winter winds whipped up around the lighthouse we were warm, cozy, safe and secure inside. There is the odd rattle from the Windows (or is it the ghost ?) but it just added to the character and charm of the place. This was a belated Christmas present for my wife and I was a bit apprehensive as to whether she would like it. I need'nt have worried. She loved it from the outset and deemed it a magical place. If you are thinking about staying in a lighthouse I would highly recommend the Wicklow Lighthouse, you will not be disappointed.

My wife and I had a wonderful 3 days in Wicklow Lighthouse. Despite the presence of a storm the accommodation was warm and comfortable. Miriam was extremely helpful and welcoming and made us feel at home. Yes there are 110 steos but once we got used to it the journey was not too bad. The views from the windows were spectacular and the walks around the area were scenic. We would fully recommend the Lighthouse and hope to return some time.

We enjoyed our stay at Wicklow Head Lighthouse over the Christmas period. We received a heart felt welcome from Miriam Conway on arrival. The lighthouse was immaculate and well furnished . We experienced storm Frank's windy, wet conditions but we were well insulated inside the lighthouse. We had a lovely evening meal in the newly opened seafood restaurant - The Lighthouse restaurant in Wicklow town. We would recommend a stay at Wicklow Head Lighthouse if you wish to experience a remarkable and novel adventure.

This is a fantastic location, the building is stunning, there are lots of things to do locally and even if the weather is bad (and it was for our first day) the sights and sounds at the lighthouse are pretty awesome. The lighthouse itself had been beautifully decorated prior to our arrival with fresh flowers and Christmas decorations.(Thank you Miriam) This place is what you make of it, its not a spa its not a hotel its a lighthouse and a very unique one at that. It has all of the comforts you need, yes there are steps to climb yes it is out of the way but it is very peaceful with a seal colony nearby, beautiful views of the ocean and only a short drive from Glendalough and Powerscourt. I would love to be here in the summertime when the scenery must be even more spectacular.

We received a voucher for Irish landmark Trust and left it a bit late to book it earlier in the year when the weather would be more suitable.
Miriam the lady who looks after the venue could not have been more helpful, The rooms were spotless as was the entire building. The kitchen area is cold and not comfortable for eating in, but I guess we were in a lighthouse in Ireland in winter.
We really enjoyed our stay but wonder the need to vacate a property at 10.00, it seems early even allowing for cleaning and necessitates getting up very early on what is meant to be a relaxing weekend.

kind Regards,
Billy

What a fantastic holiday! We loved the lighthouse, a very special place. We had a lovely welcome from Miriam. The children, aged 2 and 5 were really taken with the novelty of the lighthouse, the many stairs, the window seats and the echoing noises. They can't wait to go back! It was so cozy and warm on the dark winter evenings. Lovely to come back to the lighthouse in the pitch dark and see the windows lit up against the sky. Needless to say, possibly not a location for a very young child not steady on their feet due to the stairs! Loved the lighthouse - we have already recommended it to our friends!

Had an excellent time at this property, wonderful location and suitably atmospheric. Miriam the custodian and her son Brendan were lovely and a wonderful help to us (especially when our car battery failed on a dark and stormy first night). If you want a unique getaway then I would definitely recommend this property - everyone (including my two teenage sons and the dog) enjoyed their stay.

Stayed here for a bank holiday weekend and enjoyed every minute. A totally unique experience. Wonderful scenery and the views were amazing. So cool to live in your own lighthouse. We will always have great memories of our stay. Couldnt find a fault from start to finish. Its hard to describe ,you just have to experience it really.

Fantastic time was had by our two boys (11 and 12) and ourselves. The building was a treat and a real experience to stay in a 230 year old lighthouse. We had storms on two of the three nights which were part of the feeling connected with the people of old who braved the stormy seas and kept the lights working for their safety. We were warm and cosy inside with the metre thick walls. We were very well lapped after by Miriam and Brendan who are the house keepers, and the stairs did wonders for our fitness! There is a lot to do in Wicklow with wonderful walks and scenery and many nice places to eat. Highly recommend a visit to Wicklow Head Lighthouse.

There are not too many lighthouses one can stay in and this was a fabulous experience! The location (and views); the quality of the old lighthouse restoration; the standard of accommodation and appointments; and, the personable service by the hosts was fantastic. A lovely place to stay with plenty of history and interesting activities in the local area.

An amazing building in a beautiful spot. Loved the experience. There was a problem at check in but customer service was great, fixed that night & we moved in the following day. You would need to be reasonably fit as there are a lot of stairs to climb, but it's worth it. Water pressure is not great in the kitchen on the top floor, but you would expect that in a lighthouse five floors up!
Amazing views out of the windows. Beds were very comfortable and clean. Shower could have been hotter, but you don't choose to stay in a lighthouse for the luxury :-)
Everyone should stay there at least once.

Recalling childhood memories.

We got a warm welcome on arrival. Clear and helpful advice given. Beautifully made beds with plenty of towels provided. Beds were exceptionally comfortable. Land and sea scapes spectacular from the deep cushioned windows.
Plenty of wild life to be seen in a safe environment.

This was a fantastic and unique location for a number of reasons. The setting is incredible, surrounded by fantastic views of the Wicklow coastline. The cliff walks provide a great opportunity to explore the coast, and there's a great chance you'll encounter the local wild life with several coves playing home to large pods of seals. The lighthouse itself is incredibly cosy and taken together with the surroundings will provide a truly memorable visit for anyone interested in staying there.

We had a fabulous time at the Wicklow Lighthouse, it's a magical place to stay. There are beautiful walks close by and a little pebble beach where we saw some curious seals. It was the perfect time of year for blackberry picking which sorted out the topping for our porridge in the mornings. We had an 11 month old with us and it was fine, there are a lot of steps but it didn't pose a problem and the big chest coffee table was the perfect barrier to block the stairs. The window seats were the perfect place to curl up with a book in the evenings. We will definitely be back and I would highly recommend it. The only complaint I would have is that check in is 4pm and you have to check out by 10am. We were there for 4 nights so it didn't overly impact us but if you were only staying a night or two it would shorten the stay.

This was a dream of my husband's - and it came true. I loved it too. We got lots of exercise climbing all the stairs! The lighthouse was in excellent condition, so clean and welcoming - thanks to Miriam and Brendon. The way it was furnished throughout was just right. We also loved the quiet. We hope to stay again in the future. A wonderful time for both of us.

Approaching this wonderful place means that you forget all the problems you have at office. Entering the light house means that you forget all tasks which were open when you left office two days before. After the first night you forget even all passwords you have been using up to now. Luckily there is no public parking next to the light house. Making sure you will find your car after the second night in the light house, because the one standing next to the light house must be yours.

Spending three nights in this beautifully restored lighthouse was great fun. It's unique layout includes a ground level entry reception with toilet, first floor bedroom, second floor bathroom (with combined tub and shower), third floor bedroom, fourth floor lounge, and top floor kitchen. The bedrooms are light filled and comfortable, the kitchen was well supplied and provided an attractive table and benches for mealtime conversations. The lounge while offering beautiful window views seemed a little less cozy and fresh. The location of the lighthouse offers interesting walks along the coast, visits to restaurants in Wicklow town, easy access to the Seamus Heaney exhibit in Ashford, and ample golfing! Over all great experience.

We're a family of four and we stayed at the lighthouse for 2 nights at the end of July 2015 for our birthdays. We all had a brilliant time, we were blessed with good weather (but a storm would've been fantastic too). Apart from the fantastic views and walks around the lighthouse there's lots to do in the local area, just over an hour from Dublin it made a great and easy mini break.

Wonderful weekend at this quirky, special place!
Beautiful walks, scenery, people and we even got to see the seals.

The Irish Landmark Trust has converted the ruin of the historical lighthouse into a quirky, cosy home, exploiting all the architectural possibilities in an intelligent way. Of course, it is very difficult to maintain the building in good condition, given the exposed position on top of the hill in this marine environment. On the other hand, this exposed position is also instrumental in providing the amazing views in every direction.

For some of the previous guests, the 109 steps up to the kitchen were apparently a challenge. However, the steps are not steep, and since we had the chance to enjoy dry weather, they were not slippery. So, this was not a problem for us.

We very much enjoyed the unspoilt environment of the lighthouse. We saw seals and thousands of seabirds at the sea, but we could also see playing rabbits, a pheasant and even a fox directly from the panoramic windows.

Last but not least, we were delighted by the interaction with the Conway family (three humans plus one non-human but thinking she is a human, according to Brendan).

Miriam and Brendan were wonderful hosts - we would have liked to have spent some time with them, but they were very busy I guess and we were out and about, so there really wasn't much time to spare between all of us.

The lighthouse itself was amazing ... Shane says it's a shame there's not a balcony at the very top to really give the feel of the views/sea etc - but we loved it all the same. The surroundings were amazing, the neighbour (Ronan?) very friendly and helpful, which was appreciated (again, we would like to have had more time with him) and it was just the most wonderful experience all round.

Congratulations to you all for providing such a wonderful opportunity to the public - an experience we will never forget. Also, your maintenance of the building and site and the cleanliness is beyond any fault whatsoever.

Our party of 4 (plus toddler) thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. What a cool experience to live in a 30m high tower surrounded by the ocean! The views are simply stunning and the tower is equipped with everything you need. It's 109 stairs to the very top, so make you sure you don't forget anything :-). Being an old building that was never intended to be lived in, it is a tad damp and cold, so we thought three nights is the perfect amount of time here.

What a wonderful experience! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the Wicklow Head Lighthouse. The only fault was the really bad droughts coming in through the windows which made it very cold. Having said that we loved it there and would go back in a heartbeat.

It is one of the most beautiful places with incredible views from every angle. The ability to stay in a lighthouse is a one in a lifetime opportunity. Wicklow is a very nice town with a lot of little shops and cafes. The people in charge of the lighthouse are so kind and wonderful, they even told us about a beach in a short walk that had seals on it. They are very knowledgeable about the history and are lighthouse keepers themselves. Such an amazing place, we will definitely be back.

Fabulous time in Wicklow Lighthouse. The sheer majesty and presence of this building make it an incomparable venue for a short stay. The views available throughout the day are pure magic and we were lucky enough to experience a full moon on an absolutely still windless night which brought about the most magical aura with stars, sea and architecture combining in a breath-taking fashion. The interior of the building is a charming mix of functional retro décor which evokes memories of simpler and less complicated times. A great place to really get away from it all and relax. Highly recommended!

We recently went to Wicklow Lighthouse - it was everything you would expect a lighthouse to be and more including gale force winds on the first evening. There are wonderful walks, views and the rooms are comfortable and furnished with the surroundings in mind. Our girls Aoibh and Cara loved the seal colony and everyone including the dog would love to go back again.

Eric whose birthday the trip was organised for was great at going down the 109 steps for any items forgotten in the car! He certainly appreciated the novelty of the building.

Brendan the host for the property couldn't have been more helpful.

Highly recommend this property for a weekend away and we will be going back and apparently it will be my turn to get items from the car!

This was a surprise for my husband's 50th birthday. He loved it! Miriam +Brendan very helpful + friendly. We had fantastic weather and really enjoyed the location., the fabulous views,..friendliness of everyone..,
Also the little touches such as the hot water bottles ,fresh flowers and the souvenir tea towel. We did the cliff walk on our first morning there and found a couple of lovely coves but, sadly, didn't see any seals! Not a huge amount in Wicklow town but got a great tour of the gaol + had a lovely dinner at the Mystic Celt. Glendalough, Kilmacurragh Gardens, Mt Usher garden +Avoca cafe also great places to go quite nearby.

Booked as a surprise for my husbands birthday. Miriam played along with this and acted as a tour guide until we reached the kitchen at the top of the lighthouse. He loved the lighthouse and it was a experience never to be forgotten. Very cosy inside, especially the bedrooms. Well equipped and the wifi was an added bonus.

I would not hesitate to recommend this and Miriam made us feel very welcome. It felt very secluded but you are only a five minute drive into town with good facilities and only an hour away from Dublin.

The lighthouse is an amazing building in a fantastic location. We had previously stated in the Lighthouse Keepers house in Whitehead in Belfast and had the most fantastic trip. Unfortunately this experience was not the same.

The building is in extreme disrepair and needs to be closed for a couple of months to be completely gutted. It needs all new windows, a new heating system, a new bathroom and the walls completely stripped and repainted. Until this is done the building should not be rented out.

It was absolutely freezing despite the fact we had the heat on the full time we were there. But to add insult to injury some of the heaters did not work. The first night it was very wet and windy and at one point when the windows were not rattling we could hear and see water dripping down the walls and onto the stairs. The rain was coming in one of the windows in the dome. We had to go to bed as it was the only way we could keep warm.

We didn't complain to the people minding the property as it wasn't their fault and they were lovely. But Landmark Trust should be very embarrassed with this property. I would be very slow to rent another Landmark property again to be honest and certainly would not recommend this one to anyone. And it's a shame because after our four night stay in Belfast I couldn't stop talking about the place.

Regards,
Clare

Thank you for taking some time to write a review of your recent stay at Wicklow Lighthouse and I appreciate your notes. I would like to take a moment to address some items that you mentioned. Our buildings were made to the standards of earlier times and consequently guests may encounter features that reflect their particular character. In all cases we have sought to make a sensible compromise between due regard for safety and the careful retention of the fabric of each building, which makes it an interesting place to stay. In some cases, such as in Wicklow Lighthouse, the property was not built with the intention that it should be lived in. At Wicklow Lighthouse, due to the open plan of the property, it can be problematic trying to maintain a highlevel of heat during winter months. Unfortunately this winter has been particularly cold with storms blowing in from the sea and given the location of the Lighthouse on the headland we have tried our best to provide additional heat at the property. Our House Manager was shocked to read the note about the heat during your stay, as she would have taken immediate steps to remedy the matter. As Wicklow Lighthouse is our most popular property it can be a struggle to schedule in maintenance work. However, I am delighted to notify all of our guests that we recently have had the bathroom re-tiled and also many of the windows replaced with more appropriate fitting sashes. The remainder of the windows are also due to be replaced very soon. Due to the environment and hardship of the location we face constant maintenance with regard to painting. Regrettably there has not been time to arrange for this over the winter season but this is also due to be scheduled in at the earliest opportunity. If you decide to continue to support Irish Landmark Trust by renting another of our 26 properties throughout Ireland please call the bookings office directly and we will be delighted to offer suggestions and advise of which houses may be suitable to your requirements.

This magical place should be on everyone's bucket list

This was our second stay at Wicklow Lighthouse and it was just as good as the first time. If you are able to climb stairs do try it - you won't want to leave. Miriam is so friendly and has the place sparkling with everything you could possibly need for a lovely comfortable stay.

The only quibble we would have is that the living and kitchen area was cold. Especially the kitchen. I'm not sure what you could do about that because of the high ceiling and the open plan.
We would definitely come again but perhaps in warmer weather.
Many thanks. Keep up the good work.

Just spent 3 beautiful days down in Wicklow and had a wonderful time. Fortunately for us as nobody was staying in the lighthouse the day before, Miriam kindly agreed to meet us earlier than the original 4pm check in which was fantastic. I had booked this as a surprise for my partner so we met Miriam 'for a tour' and only when we arrived up at the kitchen we told him he was staying, his reaction was fantastic (he is still smiling!!). You really don't notice the 109 steps (unless you leave something in the entrance hall which you need in the living room and you have to make the trip again!) but the views make it all worthwhile. It was a very stormy couple of nights which added to the magic plus we had a clear sky and you could see stars for miles. We even got up for the sunrise (and got wonderful photos of the moon too). The lighthouse itself is very well laid out and has everything you need if you want to stay in. Kitchen is small but has everything in the way of utensils and equipment. There is a little electric burner in the living room which is cosy and there are a lot of throws to wrap yourself up in also. The water pressure in the bathroom shower is great and there is also another toilet down in the entrance hall which is handy if you are out for walks. Wicklow town is great for restaurants and bars, from top end eateries to cosy bars but I would recommend you explore more of Wicklow (the drive alone is beautiful) we went to Redcross, Laragh and Glendalough for food also. Its great to get away from it all but for those who like a little 'peace' of technology the WIFI connection was great. All in all it was a brill experience that sadly might not be repeated for a long while but will never be forgotten.

A beautiful location; gorgeous views; helpful, warm and friendly managers. We had a wonderful stay in a once-in-a-lifetime place over New Year 2014. Just remember, if you are planning to stay in winter, it will be cold as so difficult to heat a tall tower!!

My husband and I had a fantastic weekend in Wicklowhead Lighthouse. It exceeded expectations. The uniqueness of the venue and the beauty of the location are a winning combination. The lighthouse is clean and comfortable, the views and cliff walks are spectacular. We felt like we had been transported to another planet, so removed were we from busy, normal life.
We returned after the trip feeling refreshed and relaxed, the lighthouse forces you to do that. I recommend it to anyone looking for a real break.

A perfect location far away from business and thus a perfect retreat to merge with nature! Though the weather was foggy we enjoyed focus on the different style of living. We didn't neet TV, Internet and even the music we switched off in order to listen to the winds.

Basically, everything happened very well from the first contact up to the reimbursement of the deposit after my return. In particular, the house manager, Brenan, was absolutely charming.

The moment we have spent my spouse and I, in the context of our 20th wedding anniversary, was magic.
Thank you for that!

An atmospheric place to stay, this was enhanced by an exciting storm on the first night. Also recommend going out at night to see it in the moonlight. Miriam & Brendan are very helpful & friendly. Lots of places to visit in the area & Wicklow town centre has plenty going on. The lighthouse is snug, well equipped & has beautiful views. If you want somewhere different & don't mind a few stairs, it's a great place for a cosy, yet dramatic getaway.

Whilst the heritage of the property was beautiful and the location breath taking, we found the hygiene very poor and were very disappointed with our stay. There were dead flies all over the house when we arrived predominately in the kitchen and in the bread bin! Crockery was greasy and I had to wash a lot before we had dinner. In the evening a flight of steps became flooded with water, the rain was pushing in whilst we were warned about this, and we were okay with that! There was nothing that I could use to clean it up, no mop or floor cloth in sight. It was so much water I had to use 4 of our towels provided, the wet steps were such a hazard.

Whilst the bed linens seemed clean and fresh, many other areas were not, the kitchen floor and table were very poor { cleaned jam off the oilcloth on the table } , cupboards { lots of crumbs in the cutlery tray in the kitchen ) and other parts were really not acceptable. We were quite disappointed. I mentioned to the caretaker we would drop an email, we wanted to leave without any negativity on that day.

I do hope this feedback will help to provide a more pleasurable stay for future guests.

Thanks

Bookings Officer replied more than 1 year ago
It is disappointing to read of your experience at Wicklow Lighthouse and I am sorry you left with the opinion the building is not maintained as this is certainly not the case. Yes, Wicklow Lighthouse is an old building and we have continuous maintenance matters that need to be addressed on an ongoing basis. We always state that our buildings were made to the standards of earlier times and sometimes, as in the case with Wicklow Lighthouse, without the intention that they should be lived in. Consequently features that reflect the buildings particular character are encountered and deserve due care and attention, particularly by the young, elderly, less mobile or visually impaired. You mentioned that water had seeped in through the windows during a heavy rain shower and I can assure you that we are in the process of trying to resolve to this matter. We have had architects on site and we are waiting for their report of how to proceed. We would ask of anyone who is considering renting an Irish Landmark Trust property as their Holiday Home to appreciate and use the building with this understanding. In all cases we have sought to make a sensible compromise between due regard for safety and the careful retention of the fabric of each building, which makes it an interesting place to stay. From our many other reviews of Wicklow Lighthouse I’m sure you can see that your other notes are not reflective of the usual high standards that prevail here at the Irish Landmark. I do hope that this will not deter either yourself or other potential people considering an Irish Landmark Trust property in the future.

Our family (2 adults and 2 grown sons) have spent a most enjoyable 8-day (7-night) stay at Wicklow Head Lighthouse, between 19 and 26 September 2014.

The Lighthouse is very tastefully furnished and well-equipped, and offered us a great experience inside it and around its surroundings.

However we would recommend the following:
- a new re-designed kitchen sink drain-board, as the present one is too tiny;
- provision of a toaster in the kitchen;
- a flexible, not fixed, shower in the bath;
- ideally 2 twin beds, instead of a double bed, in one of the bedrooms;
- possibly some type of intercom system between the 6 floors;
- improved internet connectivity

Sincere thanks to house manager Miriam Conway and her son Brendan for their hospitality and help.

Family CASSAR MANGHI, Malta.

Thank you for taking the time to let us know how your stay in your Holiday Home at Wicklow Head Lighthouse. Thank you for your suggestions which have been passed on to the property manager for review. Unfortunately as a non-profit organisation we have very little funds at the moment but we do try to take on all guests suggestions in the hope that when fundraising actvities bring in some money we can allocate it to improving what we can in the properties. All donations and bookings are greatly appreciated.

Thought it was very expensive e550 as it really was only one day. We arrived at 4pm on Friday and had to check out at 10am on Sunday. I felt that was very early. Earlier than any hotel.

Beautiful location, great views. Well equipped. But don't expect solitude. More than 20 walkers strolled through the yard every morning. It was the least secluded of any rural holiday rental we've had.

For the price paid, the bathroom -and kitchen should be better maintained: the grout and sealant is on poor condition and missing around the kitchen sink and bathtub, with black mold setting in.

Some lights on the stairway were missing. The stairs are painted black, and it made it a bit tricky to navigate them at night, and a bit dangerous for those with aging eyes.

The bed was saggy, My back couldn't have handled a fourth night, despite the scenery and unique opportunity.

We felt special staying in a lighthouse, and I'd recommend it to anyone in reasonable shape. What a treat! It just needs a bit of upkeep.

Thank you Carolyn for commenting on your stay at Wicklow Lighthouse. I have passed on your notes to the property manager. As the summer was so busy at Wicklow Lighthouse it was impossible to arrange a maintenance day but we have a few days scheduled soon and these issues will be addressed during this period.

What a truly special experience even if it was the 4th time we've stayed at Wicklow Head Lighthouse (and we're already thinking about when to go again - I guess that says it all)! Where else do you have the chance to not only stay in the lighthouse keeper's house next to the lighthouse but IN the lighthouse itself? Welcoming warm hearted house managers will await you and once you have adjusted to taking all the stair steps up and down the lighthouse (you'll easily get used to it and wish you had it at home, too - what a good exercise) it will feel like home away from home. Charming rooms with deep windows that allow you to sit in them and enjoy incredible views all around, a fully equipped kitchen that invites you to cook delicious meals, a cozy living room with an artificial fire stove that keeps you warm when winds howl outside... This place is truly unique, perfect for a special surprize stay for a loved one or for unwinding and relaxing. You will enjoy the peace and silence only interrupted by the mystical winds and the sheeps' baa, you will want to go for a walk down to the cliffs to watch the seals, or to Wicklow town where lovely cafés and tavern await you. In conclusion: Do yourself a favour and stay at least several days to fully enjoy Wicklow Head lighthouse - you will regret staying for only 1 night!

In one word "brilliant" , lighthouse as well as location and hospitality
Everything inside the lighthouse works perfect (plumbing, water, heating, electricity...)
The lighthouse inside is super cosy and impeccably clean.
Magnificent location and scenery.

A lighthouse all to ourselves! Our stay at Wicklow Head Lighthouse was exceptional - better than we could have ever imagined. Having grown up along the eastern coast of the U.S., lighthouses have always been a familiar and welcome sight. To stay in a lighthouse in Ireland for three nights was a thrilling opportunity. The renovations and transformation of the lighthouse into such a welcoming place for visitors was a brilliant plan by the Irish Landmark Trust. You'll enjoy amazing views from so many vantage points and scenic walks while listening to the waves coming to shore. The accommodations in the lighthouse are extremely comfortable and well selected for lighthouse enthusiasts. To truly experience Ireland, a stay at Wicklow Head Lighthouse is a must!

Miriam and Brendan are wonderful hosts and were most helpful during our stay. We look forward to returning to Wicklow Head Lighthouse in the future!

The lighthouse experience is unique and difficult to compare to regular lodgings, but the experience was truly wonderful. Wicklow is an enchanting small town well located near Glendalough,Powerscourt, and the Wicklow mountains. The lighthouse has good facilities and a common area where we gathered with our traveling companions to talk about our daily experiences.

We had a wonderful stay in the Lighthouse. In every way it was a great experience. We were very taken by the really warm welcome given to us by Miriam and her family.

They made sure that all was sorted before they left us on the first day. They also took time to give us information and recommendations on walks etc.

The facilities in the Lighthouse were excellent and apart for the warning about the number of steps (my knees didn't know what happened to them!) I would highly recommend this property to anyone.

Thank you,

Ann & Paul Kenny

Thorougly enjoyed the two night stay in a very unique building and setting in May. The service provided by the ILT and the Housekeeper was excellent. The weather for the two night's stay was very good, the first night was almost tranquil, the second a little windier and foggier, which gave a flavour of typical weather conditions. The walls were a little damp in a few places with a small amount of mould evident. The kitchen was small but was very well stocked for most people's needs. There seemed to be a problem with the hot water in the kitchen. Heating was adequate in the kitchen and living room. The bedrooms were adequately furnished, cosy and had exceptional views. The maritime internal decor was deisgned in keeping with the surroundings. Despite really enjoying the weekend, I thought the rental charge was a little overpriced.

We stayed at the lighthouse with our 2 children aged 5 and 9. it was absolutely wonderful! A real escape from it all yet so close to Wiclow Town, where we found a fab fish shop. We had planned to go out for dinner but the minute we saw the lighthouse we scrapped that plan, bought fish in Wicklow and ate in with a view of the sea all around.

The lighthouse is a bit drafty but there are nice blankets and heaters in every room, and it is really cosy.

Special thanks to the manager - she is wonderful!

We will be back!

It is an old lighthouse. The flaky interior walls and cooler temperatures added to both the character of the property and the whole lighthouse experience. The décor and furnishings were totally in keeping with the lighthouse promoting a nautical theme to emphasise the amazing views of the sea which could be viewed at every level. The house keeper and her family provided a warm welcome and help when required.

An issue with water from the bathroom dripping into the lower bedroom has been reported and the Trust assures me it will be addressed.

Even the exercise provided by climbing the stairs ( and the breathless levels) became a humorous talking point.

The leak aside, this was a remarkable break which everyone enjoyed and would love to be able to repeat at some point in the future

Stayed for two nights with friends. Location is fantastic - secluded but not too far from shops/pubs if required. Private land so very peaceful and easy to get away from it all. Beautiful cliff walks in the area, and you might even spot the Arklow off-shore wind farm to the south on a clear day. The lighthouse is in great condition, considering how difficult it must be to manage an old building, so I have rated it as such - an old building that will have leaks and creaks. Surprisingly cosy and comfortable, with generous rooms considering the available space. Kitchen is small and functional. Bathroom is spacious with decent shower pressure. Facilities like linens are as good as any other ILT property or hotel I've stayed in. This house is not for everyone - it's not perfect, but it's magical. There are a lot of stairs, but it's worth the climb. There's no telly or phone, but you can get away from it all. Can't wait to head back.

We were greeted by the most charming of hosts and given all the practical information we needed. The lighthouse is an architectural gem, with very pleasant and appropriate decor and an extraordinarily snug ambiance. We simply loved the place. You do need your climbing legs at 109 steps to the kitchen but wait until you see the view from there.

What charmed me most about the place was the feeling of being far from the madding crowd.

It is all together one of those experiences to look back upon in old age and smile...

What a wonderful three days. Staying in a lighthouse, en famille, was an unforgettable experience. Well worthwhile and, without doubt, a place to return to.

Wonderful home away from home(even if there are 109 steps to the kitchen). Stepping back in time and easy to imagine shipwrecks and smugglers all around. A bit cold in the evening but lovely throws to snuggle up in. Great place to get fit with all the stairs.

Overall I found the lighthouse stay a great experience. However it's not one that I would repeat in this particular lighthouse. We had previously stayed in Blackhead Lighthouse, Co. Antrim, and have to compare Wicklow to this. I loved the location in Wicklow, it was very private but still not too far from a town which had all the amenities you could want. The caretakers were friendly and helpful. There were plenty of towels and lovely fresh flowers.
There were a few downsides to our stay. We have 3 children aged 4, 6 and 8 and I was quite nervous of them on all the stairs. There is no central heating in the Lighthouse, and the first night the temperature outside was 3 degrees. Inside was very cold, especially in the living area, because it has no door, and an open stairwell.
There are storage heaters in the bedrooms and the bedrooms have doors so they were nice and cosy. One of the windows seems to be broken, and is quite crudely fixed closed. On a windy night (they're all windy on the coast) there was quite a gale whistling through the gap.
There is a problem with dampness, if you run your hand along the inside of the external walls, the bubbling paint flecks off. When I had a shower on the first morning, my children came running up to tell me there was water dripping through their ceiling. The leak will need to be repaired very soon and the ceiling repaired, or it will damage the bedroom floor as well as the ceiling.
The kitchen is compact and has almost everything you need, but no toaster. The grill on the cooker was a bit temperamental.
Overall I would say it was a nice experience to stay in the lighthouse, but by the second night I was missing the comforts of home.

A great experience, not for the faint of heart!! We had amazing wind, it was angry and loud, but safe in the lighthouse. Had a lovely walk to the working lighthouse, lots of good restaurants close by, and great golf. A great leg workout. Miriam and Brendan were great. It will be remembered well.

We had a very enjoyable night at the light house. The care takers are wonderful, our only comment would be that we would not stay there in March again. The light house was a little cold and damp, now we know that the building is v. v old and iwe have no idea how to fix the problem ,but for the price we think you should look into it.

I bought a weekend stay in the Wicklow Head lighthouse as a Christmas present for my husband, which I could also enjoy! We arrived on a friday afternoon and were greeted so warmly by Brendan- a font of local knowledge and information. He gave us the tour of the lighthouse and arranged to meet us on the sunday when we were leeaving. We took his advice and followed the trail to the seal's private beach- amazing experience. The lighthouse itself is fantastic- we both loved the fairytale like quality to the rooms- the cosy living area with all it's comfy seats and window seats to watch the world go by while curled up witha cup of tea and a good book. The bedroom was extremely cosy which surprised us. Everything in the place was spotless and tidy. We were really impressed with how well this property is maintained and if the rest of the Irish Landmark Trust properties are the same, we will definitely be booking further breaks. Overall, an unforgettable experience and one we would highly recommend.

Magical place. Very expensive for our pocket but worth it as a one-off experience! More atmospheric than luxurious. Perfect for a romancing couple. Can't imagine where you'd put the dog! Awkward layout for the shower - cold splash at the start. Very pleasant caretaker.

Our stay overall was enjoyable given the weather conditions being quite bad. The building is getting quite a lot of leaking which makes the stairs slippy and wet and could be dangerous. Also the storage heaters need replacing as very little heat coming out of them. Biggest issue is the fan heater that is supplied for keeping guests warm in the living area it is not strong enough at all and an upgraded heater with bigger output needed. That being said the bedrooms were nice and snug and warm and bathroom was of a decent standard with good water supply and shower.

We had a fabulous weekend at the lighthouse. Amazing location and views. Very quaint. Good exercise on the stairs! Miriam was lovely. Only drawback: We were a bit disappointed to have to leave by 10 on Sunday. Even noon would have been more civilised. Thank you.

Booked the Wicklow Lighthouse as a surprise for my husbands 50th. As soon as you drive up to it it takes your breath away. Your very own lighthouse :). Step inside and the magic begins and you just don't want to leave. We loved being there and hope to back again and again and again :)

We had a lovely stay but unfortunately because there were only storage heaters in the sitting room and kitchen we were extremely cold in these rooms and had to keep coats and scarfs on during our meals! Suggest electric heaters installed, as in the bedrooms which were very effective. Also may help to put in a few more doors between the floors to stop the drafts.

Another suggestion would be to change the hall-entrance into a decent size kitchen as the kitchen is too small for 4 people - this room can then be adapted into another single room increasing your capacity or another loo so that if in the sitting room the distance to go would not be so far.

We had an absolutely great time in the Wicklow Lighthouse. The place is equipped to provide the highest comfort and is tastefully furnished. Of course, you cannot top the location at the seaside and the stunning views on the sea and the green landscape all around. I definitely recommend this splendid place to everybody that wants to spend a few quiet days away from the hassle and bustle.
