Chic house in top location for coastal exploring. Nearest beach is the tiny quay a minutes (slow) walk from the front door. Crabbing + boat trips v close. Cycling from here to Lymington is easy. Foodies are spoilt here. Long and wild beaches are a short walk. Dogs welcome.

We spent a great weekend at The Old Post Office. The house is just as described and in the perfect location with wonderful views and walks from the doorstep. All very comfortable with plenty of teabags, dishwasher tablets, bin bags etc provided for our stay. Children loved the bunk bed room and also the huge bath. You could sit looking out of the window all day but we were very lucky with the weather so were out most of our stay, had an amazing breakfast at the Lighthouse cafe and really enjoyed dinner and the open fires at the Gun Inn, literally a few steps away. We’d never visited Keyhaven before but would definitely recommend and hope to return.

We were two families who came together to celebrate New Year. The location was fantastic with lovely views. Even though the weather was bad we still had some lovely walks towards Hurst Castle and surrounding areas right from the front door. The house was very comfortable - particularly the sofa in the living room where you could relax and see the boats sailing in the distance. The house was very clean and well looked after and the secure back garden and 'boot room' was handy for our dog. We had everything we could need for our stay. The kitchen was well stocked and the coffee machine a welcome sight. The welcome bottle of Prosecco was also a lovely touch - thank you. The booking process was also very easy, ample information was provided so that we had no questions and the one phone conversation I had with a member of staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
The only SLIGHT points which I think could improve the overall accommodation is if there was a table in the kitchen big enough to seat 8 (as the house accommodates 8). Also the mattress in the small double bedroom was quite soft (though this is just personal preference) and did subside in the middle a little.

Gorgeous “little” cottage. Cosy, beautifully decorated and fitted out, even down to a fully useable kitchen with everything you need! Little details like white company towels and feather bedding all added up to a perfect cottage to celebrate a special birthday in! Just walk out the front door and through the boat yard to shingle spit paths and views of Isle of Wight. Perfect for walking. Lovely village within walking distance too, serving perfect coffees and shops to poke around in. Definitely recommend a stay here.

A lovely property in a great location. However there could be more comfortable seating in the sitting room, more glasses and mugs and one j cloth to last 8 people for a week seems a little mean.
Overall the house was lovely.

Amazing property In fantastic location. Very peaceful with great open views from most windows.
The house is very comfortable and very well equipped for self catering. Also, the local pub, The Gun, comes very highly recommended; we had a superb meal there.
For a fun day out hire electric bikes from jaunt-e-bikes, literally just up the road.
New Forest Escapes, also highly recommended for their communication in booking the property.

Stayed at this holiday home during the hottest week of the year which was an unexpected bonus making our stay doubly enjoyable. The location is excellent if you are happy to be a short drive from full amenities in Milford. The Gun Inn just next door but one is fabulous. Terrific food and service. Lovely to wander along there for lunch and dinner! Great dig and coastal walks on your doorstep. Stunning views, sunrises and sunsets. Seeing the Isle of Wight, Hurst Castle and the lighthouse so close by is magical. Huge colony of geese are in the marshes and perform amazing flypasts frequently! It is a birdwatchers paradise. We stayed fairly local, so much to see and do. We swam in the sea off Hurst Spit, it was idyllic! The house itself is on a sharp corner on a narrow lane and there are a lot of comings and goings from the public carpark almost opposite and the boatyard and Campervan visitors visiting the Spit further along looking for free parking. This may be an issue if you have young children whom are prone to ‘escaping’! However it also makes it an interesting place to people watch and see what’s happening in the boatyard. The location is never ‘noisy/busy’ in an intrusive way. The boatyard also has a handy little shop selling great takeaway coffees/hot drinks and icecreams etc. only 2mins from the house. Handy for a quick breakfast drink enroute a dog walk. The back garden courtyard is entirely enclosed and safe however for children and dogs. And it is pretty if in need of a little TLC. This is the same for the rest of the property we felt. The house is roomy and the lounge is full of light and all is tastefully decorated. The upstairs bathrooms are smart and the family one is overly large. The Aga in the kitchen would be fabulous in the cooler months. When it is 27 degrees outside and there is a red-hot Aga in the kitchen it made being in there a little daunting! The front and back doors are old and ill fitting and well worn so we felt they would be very draughty when cold weather hits so the Aga would be very welcome then! The locks are stiff and have a knack to opening - older arthritic hands struggled with this. The seating in the lounge area is also well worn and the sofa is well past its best with the upholstery underneath hanging down and the webbing saggy. So not very comfy. We were a party of 4 adults, 84,63,60 & 24yrs. The three older adults especially needed comfy seating. The window seat in the lounge is pretty but not comfy for any length of time for older guests. We used all 4 bedrooms. Sadly the comfort level of the beds/mattresses differed considerably and the twin and bunk rooms beds caused bad backs and uncomfy nights. The bunk room is only really useable by young lightweight children! Springs in the mattresses wear noisy and readily felt by the sleeper. The bedding in there also felt clammy - there is no damp as such but that room did feel less ‘dry’ than the others. It is not suitable for less mobile adults at all in our view. This was a disappointment as we had hoped our 84yr old adult could have used this room with the downstairs shower room close by and avoid using the stairs altogether. The twin room lacked hanging space or any hooks to hang clothes from and is a little tight for space. We shared access to wardrobes which were best in the 2nd bedroom but this is not always feasible we thought for other groups. There was a bin in the main bedroom but not in any of the others - seems a trivial thing but it just meant that some in our group had to use make-do plastic bags for their cosmetic waste and tissues etc. On its own not a big deal of course but…. There were a lot of cobwebs in the bedrooms too. Several above the main bed. On arrival there was a large dead spider hanging from a corner and midges caught in webs. Clearly visible, we weren’t hunting around for these things! The window frames are grubby, with dead insects trapped in the frames etc and very noticeable as you tend to spend a lot of time hanging out of the windows to admire the views! It seemed the house is geared more toward a family group with young children based on the seating and beds comfort levels. We felt all mattresses should be of equal quality and comfort for adult use and the lounge seating needs replacing or reupholstering so all are equally comfy. It should not be assumed that a group booking is not going to consist of all adults. We had to keep swapping round so everyone got the chance to sit in the 2 armchairs as these were the marginally better seating options. As a mature adult group this was an issue for us. The kitchen is well equipped but we did very little cooking anyway. The outside dining furniture needs a bit of TLC as it is suffering from the impact of significant weathering. It was dusty in numerous places, inc bathroom corners, floors behind radiators and on loo roll holders etc. All easily improved with a closer eye for detail and standards. It was just about acceptable in terms of cleanliness for us. We would prefer no dust/cobwebs/dead insects etc. Individually it wasn’t a big deal but accumulatively it is worth flagging we feel. We loved our holiday however. The location alone helped us overcome most of our reservations. The service from New Forest Escapes was excellent. The house is lovely and no doubt many happy holidays have been had there, including our own. Would we return? We would but only if seating and bedding is upgraded so 4+ adults can holiday in equal comfort.

Great views and location (as we were sailing all week), very clean and comfortable. Particularly appreciated the thick, fluffy white company towels after a hot shower. Only shame was we didn't get the sunny weather to enjoy the back garden and BBQ.

Location is excellent, beach less than half a mile walk from the doorstep. Other walks across the salt marshes from the front door. Wonderful views to the Isle of Wight, the Needles and Hurst Castle. Local pub is 100 yards away and does excellent food, though note they are now closed until Easter 2023 for a refurb. Would thoroughly recommend the cottage. This is our second visit and won’t be our last I hope.

The best cottage we've ever stayed in, full of character but really warm and comfortable (our old dog loved snoozing by the Aga!), immaculate bathrooms and the most amazing views. Incredibly peaceful too, but with the Gun pub just metres away and a short walk into Milford.

We had a fab stay at the property, 2 mins walk from a brilliant pub and the linen used on the beds were amazing

Some things to consider to make it even better

1. Upgrade of cooking utensils particularly pots and pans
2. Put a wood burner in the living room- clearly not a cheap addition but would make it epic
3. The seating in the lounge could be improved, we suggest removing the seating ledge along the window and popping in a large corner sofa which would allow everyone to flop on one sofa- again appreciate there is a cost here

One final point- if you turn on the shower then go into the 2nd double bedroom and close the door there is a loud banging coming from the attic. We think it’s pipes rattling together, an easy fix we imagine

These are minor issues, we really loved the place and only want it to be even better

Will defo return and have already recommended to a friend

The Old Post Office is a character property with excellent modern features. Extremely comfortable and cosy with everything you need for a relaxed stay in a super location. It was great to be able to walk out of the cottage and straight onto the path to the sea wall. The ferry to Hurst castle was moments away and the views of the salt marsh and the Isle of Wight from so many windows was an added bonus. An excellent pub The Gun just a two minute walk away provided first class meals. Easy to get to Lymington and many New Forest destinations. Incredibly peaceful and relaxing stay.

We were three generations having a family weekend away. House very clean and light-filled and v nicely decorated in seaside-y colours. It was well equipped with good quantity of crockery/cutlery and thoughtfully provided unbreakable childrens' stuff too. Also some toys and childrens' books too. I wasn't expecting an AGA (probably didn't read the details closely enough) but it was fine and made the kitchen very warm - might be a problem in a hot summer. There is also a two-ring induction hob which we didn't use. No grill, other than in microwave. The outside space is pleasant, though if you have budding footballers you might want somewhere with a bigger garden. Our toddler loved it. The views towards the Isle of Wight were gorgeous and it was a very peaceful spot. Great being very near The Gun pub too where we went a couple of times. Convenient for Milford, Lymington and Brockenhurst, where we hired bikes from Cycle Experience. Our brief problem with the dishwasher would have been attended to promptly but luckily we got it going again. Could have done with some hand towels (only the biggest bedroom was provided with these) but not a major thing. Now we are back I believe the description of the house on the website is fair and balanced and it is a lovely place to stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at The Old Post Office. The cottage is comfortable and very cosy with the warmth of the aga. The kitchen is a lovely place to hang out after a long walk. It’s also well equipped with everything you’ll need and the aga is easy to use (there’s an electric hob and a microwave if you prefer). The bedrooms are a good size with wonderful views from the two doubles. The only downside for comfort would be a slight lack of comfortable seating in the living room if you have more than 4 adults and you want a night in watching TV. We got round this by bringing an inflatable chair, but this may be worth thinking about - although there are plenty of other chairs to sit on if you’re not fussy!
The location is fantastic and we enjoyed the boat trip to Hurst Castle and the walks along the coast. The forest is very close by and Lymington is just a short drive away. Highly recommend The Gun Inn (pretty much next door to the cottage) - we had an excellent evening meal.
Overall a really enjoyable long weekend with the family. Thanks New Forest Escapes!

Myself and my family had a lovely 3 night stay at The Old Post Office. The location is wonderful, with views over the little sailing boats out to The Solent. It is peaceful, but not too remote. We were a few minutes away from a lovely pub, The Gun, which served delicious meals and even catered really well for our large group who are all vegans.

We spent a lovely week at The Old Post Office mid-September with our young son and a couple of friends who came for the weekend. I hope my review will allow others to make the choice as to whether this accommodation is right for them.

The location is absolutely brilliant. Waking up to such wonderful views, with a short walk to the beach, about 60 seconds to the ferry to Hurst Castle, a short drive to the lovely town of Milford… you can’t fault it. The house is very spacious and welcoming, despite looking slightly worn in places. Very clean and well-equipped and the supplied beach towels were a real plus. It was a lovely place to return to after a day at the beach or out walking. We had a barbecue one afternoon, ate in a few local restaurants (The Lighthouse and the Paddle are recommended) and self-catered.

There are a few things worth pointing out though, because I think they either need addressing or consideration if you’re thinking of booking:
-The aga. I know it’s love or hate with agas, but I would seriously not want to stay here in the summer. The kitchen is too small for an aga. Even in September the kitchen was sometimes unbearably hot. It’s also not the safest piece of equipment with a young child about, despite this being marketed as a family home. Cooking on it is tough, not impossible, just takes getting used to and feels more trouble than it needs to be.
-The TV really is pointless. I know you’re maybe not on holiday to watch TV but I don’t understand why a larger TV with better sound quality isn’t there instead. There’s a BOSE speaker in the kitchen, a really fancy automatic toaster, and randomly this rather poor-quality TV.
-There is only one lamp in the living area which isn’t enough especially as the spotlights flicker and are unpleasant, so at night the ‘atmosphere’ is a little off. There are only four comfortable places to sit in the living room.
-As mentioned here and by other reviewers, the décor is a bit worn in places. The back of the house looks shabby, floor tiles are broken in the bathroom, the lights flicker, two bathroom locks were broken, the soft furnishings in the living room especially have seen better days.

Overall, a very memorable stay and I would return here but only in the slightly cooler months because the idea of the aga in the summer is not pleasant.

One final note, we got an email saying we could check in from 3pm instead of 5pm at… 3:30pm. Of course we were driving some distance so this wasn’t particularly helpful. 5pm is quite late, and I understand covid measures are in place but since check out is 10am it does cut almost a whole day out. Also instructions say to put your linens and towels in laundry bags provided, but none were, so we were not sure if this is still required. The instruction needs updating/clarification.

We had a fantastic week in such a lovely part of the world. Long walks along the coast, swimming in the sea, canoeing and some great food (the Gun Inn in Keyhaven was a real gem with a varied and very well executed menu). The house was comfortable and made a great base for excursions but there were some downsides worth pointing out so that they can be addressed. Having the aga on in summer made the kitchen uncomfortably hot. The TV is tiny and sounds tinny which wasn’t good for when we wanted to settle in for a family film after a long day out. For a 6 bed house there were only 4 sofa/armchair spaces. No lock on upstairs main bathroom and toilet. One downstairs window was distorted and so couldn’t be closed or locked which was a security risk. The house was very clean but overall some bits were looking a bit tired (eg the soft furnishings were worn). The garden space was lovely including for eating outside. Would we go back if these were addressed… absolutely yes.

Thank you for taking the time to send us a review of your recent stay. We appreciated you taking the time to contact us during your stay and are happy to hear you enjoyed your week over all. We try to be as clear as possible about all of our houses and provide any details that may effect guests stay in the 'home truths' section of our webpage. We also ensure detailed photographs of the property are included so guests have a clear indication of the layout of the house. We've even begun displaying virtual tours so you can virtually walk around before you book. We appreciate the TV was perhaps not adequate and have reached out the the owners to hopefully provide a solution, but we hope this didn't detract from the beauty of the area while you were here and you made the most of the great outdoors. Thanks again for leaving your review and we hope you can visit again one day soon. Very best wishes from all at New Forest Escapes.

Beautiful house in the perfect location. Warm and welcoming, especially with the AGA! I just love the walks across the marshes and down to the beach.

Great getaway!

Great getaway in a lovely cottage. Beautiful views out towards the Isle of Wight and the needles, and a great base to explore the coast and New Forest. The cottage was very well decorated with plenty of space and very clean. Importantly the kitchen was well stocked with utensils and equipment so we could cook easily for the family. We had a lovely time and will hopefully be back.

We had a fantastic time at the Old Post Office. The house is very spacious and there was plenty of room for two families. The beds are comfy, and the house is beautifully done. The location is fantastic, with gorgeous views. Handy fir exploring all of the New Forest. And the pub next door is great too! We would live to go back.

Probably the nicest cottage we have stayed in. Absolutely brilliant location with walks and cycle trails on your doorstep.
The property was spotlessly clean on arrival and very well equipped. Beautifully renovated and furnished inside with the Aga generating so much warmth for a most friendly welcome.
We spent our days out walking on either Hurst Spit - a visit to the castle is a must - or the nature reserve trails and late afternoons were spent on the window seat watching the world go by.
My only suggestion would be that a slightly bigger tv is needed in the lounge. Otherwise perfect and we hope to be back again next year.

Lovely location- property urgently needs investment.

I have written a full report on our stay at the Old Post Office for New Forest Escapes. Location fantastic, the property is very tired.

Hi Brian, Thank you for being so thorough. As per our comms, we have actioned all of your list and Susan who looks after the house has been very detailed going through it. The house was closed for a week after your stay which allowed us to book in cleaning the upholstery etc. The Plum Guide have since reviewed the property and included it into their listing so we are confident that we've got it all right now. Thank you again. Rachel
