The Munches Room was inspired by Munches House, the home of the Maxwells, Earls of Nithsdale, after the Jacobite defeat at Culloden. Munches House was a substantial Robert Adam style home. This room reflects the Adam style and connects the guests to the Jacobite history of Buittle Castle, the former home of the Maxwells. To commemorate the 850th Anniversary of Buittle, the current Baron of Buittle worked closely with renowned designer Charlotte Gaisford to choose the fittings and furnishings for this room to recreate the Adam splendor of Munches House, Munches House sadly burned down in the late 19th Century, and was replaced with a granite house, which bares the same name.

Our stop over at Buittle Castle was truly memorable, a unique historical experience. The hosts provide a very personalised stay with amazing interior furnishings reflecting the family history.

What a great little find! We booked a one night stay for my birthday as we rarely get the chance to get away. Communication was excellent throughout and Tobias was very attentive and looked after us extremely well. The food was excellent. We had dinner in our room, we would have loved to have dinner in the hall but we were made aware of heating problems and accepted this. Breakfast was also very delicious.
We had a dip in the hot tub which was lovely in the snow and extra towels were provided.
The room was a little cold, and it was exceptionally cold outside, though. Maybe a few toiletries would be nice, but for the money Buitle Castle was excellent value for money.

Thank-you so much for the lovely review, and I am very glad that you had a good stay. It was indeed exceptionally cold (snow and ice!) when you stayed, but the heating could have been turned up to its full setting on the radiator as explained. We are trying to reduce our single-use plastics, so currently provide pump bottles for shower and hand soap, but will look into additional ones too. Thanks again, and I do hope to have the pleasure to host you again.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here in a lovely part of the world. The hot tub was bonus after a long day. Tobias was a wonderful host.
Buittle is a most interesting place with interesting owners and we felt we had just scratched the surface so we will just have to make a return visit.

Buittle Castle is a beautiful and unique place to stay. The Munches room was very comfortable, the surrounding scenery was beautiful, and the breakfast was excellent. Tobias was a gracious and informative host. And it’s not every day you get to stay in a 12th century castle. I loved it.

An excellent place to stay. Very different. Great hosts, buildings and gardens. Superb food. Very comfortable. Ample car parking. Solitary and restful location, but close to ammeneties in nearby Dalbeattie. Great internet connection, but no television. So, if you want to catch up on TV take your tablets. We will definitely return and have no hesitation recommending.

A welcome by the owner of this extraordinary castle and a lovely room (one of two) in complete tranquil surroundings. Truly unforgettable. It felt like home to have a garden and lots of places outdoors to sit comfortably.

My partner and I stayed in the Muches Room for one night and we wished we'd booked for longer.
Buittle Castle is an enchanting place; the gardens are beautifully kept, the rooms are regally decorated and Tobias and James were the most polite and invested hosts.
We opted to dine at the castle intrigued by the locally sourced menu, the food was simply delicious.
Buittle Castle is a project of love and it was a pleasure to stay there. I am telling all my friends.

A wonderful experience. Beautiful setting, peaceful and the most amazing room (The Munchies) Beautifully decorated and a wonderfully comfortable bed. The gardens are beautiful and lovely Riverside walk to take my two little dogs on. It was an amazing find and I will definitely be back.

We absolutely loved our stay at Buittle Castle. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and it is clear how much love and care has been put into restoring this wonderful castle. Each room that you walk into you will notice the carefully placed items that show careful attention to detail and preservation of history. Dining in the medieval Great Hall was an unforgettable experience, with a delicious meal served on the most delicate bone china. The soft music playing in the background and the fairy lights draped from the ceiling twinkling above our heads made this the most romantic experience. But what truly made this experience special was the welcoming and friendly service provided by Tobias. He is such a lovely individual who was so patient, kind and knowledgeable about the castle and it's history. Walking around the Sunken Garden was so peaceful and relaxing, with breathtaking views of the countryside wide and far beyond the garden perimeter. Staying at th castle was truly an unforgettable experience that became the highlight of our trip. We look forward to returning again one day, and believe there is no better place to stay in Scotland.

As always, we had a very successful stay of three nights at this lovely property. It is quiet and beautifully located, yet accessible to many interesting places to visit in the area. The freshly prepared breakfast is excellent and I would recommend arranging a 'private dining' experience in the Great Hall. Nothing is too much trouble for the host.

A true welcome from Tobias to an incredible castle. Our room (The Munchies) was nicely furnished, with tea making facilities, an en suite shower room, and a very comfortable bed. It would have been useful to have had either a wardrobe or some hooks and hangers to hand up our clothes. The decor was appropriate to the historic surroundings but we did find the room rather cold. We ate breakfast and dinner in the great hall. The food was good, but the hall was extremely cold with only a few candles to illuminate the table. We did stay during a particularly cold spell in early April, so would recommend other visitors choose a warmer time of year. We were able to walk around the grounds taking us past the ancient motte and bailey down to the River Urr.

We had such a wonderful time in this beautiful place ...excellent food , beautiful warm room with a view over the garden ... The bed the most comfortable we have slept in and James and Tobias were very kind and caring... If you are in this area do treat yourself and then go for a walk by the Solway

The room was unique retaining many original features while having modern plumbing and a very comfy bed, however it was cold and could benefit from a draught excluder or heavy door curtain. The host Tobias was very charming and welcoming, very attentive and a good cook. The full Scottish breakfast was very tasty and a good start to the day.
While there we enjoyed a meal in the great hall, (which was quite romantic). We stayed during a cold spell and dined alone, but could envisage the experience as being enhanced by good weather with other guests in there. The food was delicious and good value.
Overall a lovely experience and would recommend it.

The Munches Room has well conceived and executed style, a pleasure to stay in. The property as a whole is interesting with many special features to admire and enjoy.
The hosts are knowledgeable, attentive and agreeable. In winter a tasty breakfast is served in the room.
We had an excellent evening meal in the atmospheric Great Hall.
Overall a super place to stay.

We loved our stay at Buittle Castle.
Our room was beautifully decorated and very comfortable, with everything we needed.
Tobias was a lovely host - very attentive and thoughtful. Both he and James were very knowledgeable about the castle and surrounding area, which made for an even more interesting stay.
Supper in the dining room was atmospheric and lots of fun.

A great deal of care and attention has been taken in making Buittle Castle a fabulous stay. It's located in a beautiful setting, the building itself is magnificent and the sunken garden is a joy. The room itself was beautifully decorated and furnished and had everything needed for a comfortable and relaxing stay. Tobias could not have been a more helpful and charming host. The Owners have put a lot of thought into the decor and gardens. Though a B&B rather than hotel, they are keen to be helpful. The bed was comfortable, the toiletries and tea, coffee etc generous. I think the room price a little high for what is in essence a barn conversion, but that is a marginal consideration. Excellent breakfast. They deserve to do well.

This was our second stay - we wanted to see the castle in the summer. It’s a lovely place- a mixture of rustic and grandeur. River is beautiful, Rockcliffe beach is very near, gardens are lovely, fields around with belties, rooms so elegant.
Do not miss the chance to have dinner in the great hall. Food was stunning, and the surroundings are magical.

I loved our night here, our final night of a week travelling around Scotland. The decor is gorgeous, comfortable room, lovely breakfast (including best veggie haggis of my trip!) and beautiful grounds to wander around. I would have liked to have been offered more of a look around the castle, print room etc.

My husband and I have had several stays at Buittle Castle and always have a wonderful experience. What makes it stand out is the excellent service from the owners and staff. An innovation this year is the tea and coffee making facilities in the room - so convenient. And the breakfasts are the best! A good choice, freshly cooked and delivered on time.

A perfect spot for a night away. A beautiful spot with really helpful staff. Highly recommend a walk by the river and star gazing in the hot tub. We will be back !!
