A lovely county castle surrounded by Belted Galloway cattle and sheep. The castle grounds have a fruit trees, herbs and vegetables. Tobias is truly a wonderful gentleman and host. He prepared an amazing breakfast both mornings which consisted of local flavors ( haggis, blood pudding, potato cakes, eggs, bacon and sausage). Tobias gave us a tour of the chapel and grand hall with interesting history. Baron James prepared a formal dinner which was also delicious. We are Maxwell descendants by DNA and name so the link to this castle is intriguing.
Words cannot describe the atmospheric ambience of this ancient castle, you could almost feel the antiquity seeping through the venerable walls and furnishings. The seat of important lords/kings host to Mary Queen of Scots, 850 years of history, in a setting that looks and feels like nothing has changed. This was our last stop on a 3 week tour of the area, and after staying at some wonderful places we were worried Buittle Castle might not deliver. We couldn't have been more wrong. A big thank you to our host Tobias for a wonderful stay - and an exceptional dinner and breakfast. We really couldn't fault anything, from the warm welcome and charming room to the outstanding meal and the little touches like sherry and our name on the door. Would highly recommend this to anyone who likes something a little different and appreciates older buildings and history. A Premier Inn this is not - and all the better for it!
