The Old Shop House is situated at the heart of the picturesque Village of Galmpton and is close to the banks of the River Dart. The property is over 3 floors and enjoys two separate outdoor areas and is pet friendly.

Lovely property, however…

First of all, we want to say we did enjoy our stay at The Old Shop House. It was in a lovely little village which was close by to lots of things we wanted to do and had everything we were looking for in a property…character features, a sun filled garden, a comfy bed, and a well equipped kitchen. However, some maintenance issues absolutely should’ve been attended to before this property was let out.
We arrived at the cottage to find it clad in scaffolding which was absolutely not communicated to us and caused alarm. Once we were through the door however, the cottage looked lovely and so we were relieved. It didn’t affect our stay really, although it didn’t leave for a nice view out of the bedroom window. A pair of pliers in place of a handle on the living door was pretty quirky, and should have been an easy fix. Lastly the garden furniture on the top deck was in a very poor state and frankly the whole lot needs replacing. It’s falling apart and if there had been a group of us staying, we wouldn’t have been able to use that space. We contacted Dart Valley Cottages who did eventually respond after some nudging. They apologised and said they were under the impression that the scaffolding (up for some painting work) was down and the handle fixed. Clearly there’s either a disconnect between them and the owner, or they are aware of the situation and are just hoping no-one complains. We’ve since seen a review on AirBnb from a previous customer who complained about all of these things, and yet nothing was done before our stay and nothing communicated. Despite the problems, we’ve literally only had one response email from Dart Valley Cottages and no follow up. Very disappointing.
Moving on…some info which might be useful: the outdoor space gets the sun all day; the lower in the morning, and the upper in the afternoon/evening. The tv is a good size (but not shown in any pictures). There is a hairdryer at the property but it’s not on the listing. If you’re staying in the winter, be aware that you are not allowed to use the fireplace at all. This is despite the pictures showing a roaring fire.
Top tips: if it’s hot, take a fan as there are none at the cottage. The attic room in particular gets hot. Take laundry pods with you as none are provided. The kitchen has a decent amount of equipment (no microwave though), however there’s very little in the store cupboard beyond a bottle of oil and some teabags so take stuff with you. Not a problem, but good to be aware.
Overall we had a really good stay, but the shine was taken off. If we hadn’t encountered these issues it would have been perfect.
