The Gatehouse is a characterful, 13th century, Grade I listed holiday home which boasts rustic interiors, unique and quirky living areas and a pretty garden. Located on the edge of Lypiatt Park, this fabulous property is perfect for get togethers with loved ones.

At first glance, everything was perfect. I appreciated how easy it was to get from central London to The Gatehouse without a car - the train ride from Paddington to Stroud was around 1,5 hours and the drive from Stroud not even 10 minutes (and the taxi didn’t cost an arm and a leg).
The Gatehouse itself is absolutely charming from the outside, and in a nice remote location, which is exactly what I was after. The interior is beautiful, especially the kitchen, which was also very well-supplied, but I had to take down the creepy painting from the bedroom wall to be able to sleep at night. It generally felt quite safe and was very clean.
I encountered two main problems though: the cold and the ladybirds.
Since it’s an old building, I wasn’t expecting the insulation to be great to begin with — but the thermostats were not working properly at all. Whatever presets there were, were not nearly enough and not easy to change. I tried changing the settings, even googled the manual, and even when I thought I succeeded one time the temperature in the bedroom dropped to 16 degrees (and of course it takes a while to heat the place back up). The radiators being covered by curtains did not help the warmth to spread around. It was especially annoying in the living room where I could not find the thermostat and didn’t want to risk lighting up the fireplace. The heating there was on but I’m not sure what controlled it, and it was easily the coldest room in the house. It was a shame because I would have enjoyed that room the most.
The place was infested with ladybirds, although it was only the bedroom and bathroom. I supposed it was another old-building-in-winter perk but the scale of it was maddening. When I arrived there was at least a dozen of them at every window, and then more, and more, flying around and crawling on walls. I felt like I was going insane and couldn’t sleep the first night because I could hear them boucing off the walls. Not easy for a light sleeper!
Overall, I can’t say I managed to get any rest there at all. All I got was annoyance and overstimulation. It’s probably perfect if you like cold temperatures (and if you go in the summer I suppose the problem disappears entirely). I wished there had been a local map with footpaths included too — I wanted to go for walks and see some of the surrounding nature, but I wasn’t sure if it was allowed to just wander off on the estate. I guess it's on me because I didn't ask beforehand. Most importantly though, I hope the ladybird problem had been resolved before any other guests stayed there.

As part of the booking conditions, we do ask that guests report any issues during their stay in order to try and give the owner or their property manager a fair opportunity to rectify any issues. A contact telephone number and email address are provided in the welcome email in case of such an event. We have now sent your feedback on to the owner for them to review and implement any appropriate actions for the benefit of future. The property owner has apologised for the lady birds that seem to be a widespread issue in old stone buildings, this year. We do hope that overall, you enjoyed your time exploring the Cotswolds and that you will be back to stay again soon

The Gatehouse is a very nice small cottage however the roof leaks so had water running down the bedroom wall to the lounge below. I reported this the first morning and had a 'very sorry' reply from the agent (owners away for a few days). I then sent photos of the leak which had soaked the walls and floor, these were not acknowledged and I heard no more.
It was difficult to sleep with the water running down the walls so all in all not a very pleasant stay.
I know things can go wrong but its how they are dealt with that counts.
Shame really as it could be a nice place.

As is sometimes the case with older buildings that have flat roofs, exceptional weather conditions can result in unforeseen issues. The roof is newly installed, fully compliant with current regulations, and completed to the highest standard. The property owner sends her apologies for the inconvenience caused by the leak. As she was away during your stay and therefore unable to assist personally, responsibility for maintenance matters rested with the property manager. We regret that you were unable to communicate with him during your stay and apologise for any frustration this may have caused. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Cotswolds in the future

Lovely quirky cottage , well equipped, comfortable furnishings and very clean. We were ok but customers with mobility issues may struggle with the stairs.
