On clear days, you may even spot the distinctive Great Dun Fell NATS radar station high on the skyline, close to the summit of England’s highest paved road and a renowned challenge for cyclists. The Coast to Coast route also passes through this beautiful landscape, making Helm View Barn an excellent choice for walking and cycling families, as well as anyone simply looking to slow down and enjoy the peace and space of the countryside.
Reached along a 1.5-mile single-track country road, this former barn has been thoughtfully transformed into a luxurious “upside-down” holiday home. Contemporary touches complement the character of the traditional stone building, while the first-floor living accommodation has been cleverly positioned to make the most of the sweeping easterly views over the garden, surrounding fields and countryside.
The owners live next door in the former farmhouse and are on hand to offer a warm welcome, while guests have the privacy of their own cottage, garden and parking area.
On the ground floor, the spacious main bedroom has a king-size bed which can be converted into twin beds on request, providing flexible sleeping arrangements. There is also a Smart TV and patio doors opening directly onto the garden. The second bedroom is furnished with full-size bunk beds, ideal for older children or younger family members. Completing the ground floor is the family bathroom, where a spa bath and separate shower provide a welcome touch of luxury – perfect for a relaxing soak after a day exploring the fells.
Upstairs, the impressive open-plan living area combines the character of the original barn with contemporary comfort. Glazed doors lead onto the balcony, a lovely place to sit and admire the expansive countryside views. Comfortable sofas are gathered around an electric wood-burner-style fire, creating a cosy focal point for relaxed evenings together, while a Smart TV provides entertainment.
The dining area flows seamlessly into the well-equipped contemporary kitchen, which has everything needed for easy family meals, including a gas Rangemaster, Smeg fridge/freezer, microwave, air fryer and slow cooker. This sociable open-plan space makes it easy for everyone to cook, dine and relax together. A separate utility/WC is equipped with a washing machine and tumble dryer – particularly handy after muddy walks and outdoor adventures.
Outside, garden seating provides the perfect spot for enjoying the peaceful surroundings and fresh country air. Cyclists are especially well catered for, with a secure stone bike store and pressure washer available, making Helm View Barn an excellent base for exploring the quiet lanes, challenging climbs and scenic routes of the surrounding countryside.
