Eden Mount, Wetheral, is a magnificent Grade II listed Victorian residence overlooking the village green in the highly desirable Eden Valley village of Wetheral. Built in 1872 for a wealthy tea merchant, this handsome home combines historic elegance with generous accommodation, creating a wonderful setting for families and friends to come together. Its central location, with excellent access to the M6, the Lake District, the Scottish Borders and Newcastle, makes it a convenient meeting place for guests travelling from across the UK.

The house has preserved much of its original character, with an abundance of period features throughout. Wetheral itself is a charming village, home to a friendly pub, restaurant and village shop for everyday needs, and sits on the Newcastle train line, allowing for easy car-free excursions. Those with an interest in local history can explore nearby highlights such as the waterfall at Corby Castle, the striking 19th-century viaduct over the River Eden, and the remains of an ancient abbey within the village. The city of Carlisle is close at hand, offering a castle, cathedral, excellent shopping and a wide choice of attractions for all ages.

A short flight of steps leads to the front door and into a spacious entrance hall, where decorative stained-glass windows and traditional Victorian tiled flooring create an immediate sense of character. For quiet evenings, the main sitting room offers a welcoming space to relax with a book or enjoy time together by the open fire. There is also a cosy snug, again with an open fire, and a large formal dining room.

The traditional kitchen is fully equipped for all cooking requirements, featuring an electric double oven and hob, fridge, microwave and dishwasher. A kitchen table provides a relaxed setting for informal meals, while a sofa allows guests to socialise while food is prepared. A practical utility room houses a large fridge-freezer, washing machine and tumble dryer, and a ground-floor WC adds further convenience.

At the end of the day, guests can retreat to one of the beautifully appointed bedrooms. There are three double bedrooms, including a super king-size four-poster room and a double four-poster bedroom, as well as an additional double. A fourth bedroom offers a king-size bed that can be converted into twin beds on request, while the fifth bedroom is ideal for children, with a single bed and pull-out trundle. Two family bathrooms serve this floor: one with a bath, walk-in shower and wash basin, and the other with a bath and shower.

In the warmer months, the extensive gardens provide a delightful outdoor space, with a large lawn bordered by mature shrubs and planting, alongside a patio area furnished for alfresco dining.

Gas, electricity, bed linen, towels and an initial supply of fuel for the open fires are included. Two well-behaved dogs are welcome, and a travel cot and highchair can be provided on request. The property offers ample private parking and generous gardens. Please note that stag and hen parties are not permitted.

Perfect for a family stay!

I was fortunate enough to stay at Eden Mount for a family gathering over the festive season. Due to its generous size, it was an ideal location for a get-together, easily accommodating grandparents, cousins, children and grandchildren under one roof and around an impressive dining table. In addition to the size, however, it is worth mentioning that the house is more
than just a large building- it is stunning! It has so much historic elegance with lots of beautiful original features, but at the same time, a large, but welcoming kitchen. The outlook is also impressive, as it overlooks the picturesque village green in the heart of Wetheral Village. As it was winter while I was there, I did not experience the garden, but there is a large, sheltered patio area which I imagine would be lovely for relaxing and evening drinks in the summer.

In terms of the location, Wetheral is a very pretty village with a friendly pub, a shop and a beautiful church. A real bonus is the proximity of the railway station, just a 5-minute walk from Eden Mount. There are regular train services to Carlisle where you can connect to other destinations. This was really useful as one family flew into Newcastle Airport, another to Edinburgh Airport and a third caught the train from London to Carlisle. All found the onward journey to Wetheral easy. For those who drove, the property has ample parking.

As a walker, I enjoyed some beautiful walks along the River Eden and the nearby Talkin Tarn, a short drive away. With a car, this would also be the perfect location to visit Hadrian’s Wall or take day trips to some of the lakes.

Overall, I cannot recommend Eden Mount enough as a really stand-out rental for a group stay and one that I will remember as special!
