Cheeseborough House is a wonderfully preserved early 19th century, grade two-listed weavers cottage located in Thorngate, one of the oldest parts of historic Barnard Castle, with views over the River Tees just a few metres away, retaining many of its original features yet providing all the modern amenities one would expect in a five star rated property.

It sleeps up to four people with two spacious king size en suite bedrooms, a cosy, relaxing lounge with log burning stove and wooden floors leading into the large kitchen/dining room with original working range fireplace and stone flagged floor. A stable doorway leads into the secluded courtyard garden with apple tree, flower border and large outdoor seating area. A short stroll leads to the town's many restaurants, pubs, shops, antique shops and the world class Bowes Museum.

Cheeseborough House is perfect for 2 couples visiting the area. It is very comfortable and cosy, beautifully presented and clean. The extras in the kitchen and bathrooms were appreciated and the equipment is all good quality. Also ideally placed for walks into the town centre or out along the river in either direction to Egglestone Abbey or the castle. The courtyard is a lovely sunny area to sit all day and the Swifts in the evening made for some great entertainment! We could not fault this cottage. Highly recommended.

Another pleasant stay.

Quiet, well appointed property just a short walk from restaurants, pubs and the castle ruins. Modern conveniences seamlessly integrated with high-beamed ceilings and flagstone floors. We were fortunate to stay during some lovely weather and the walled courtyard is a perfect sun trap.
The proprietor Kate kept in touch throughout booking and arrival to make us feel welcomed.

The only problem with this property it quite cold . My husband and I stayed in the house in November and it was cold ,my daughter stayed last weekend (April) and her comment was the same> Having said that we all enjoyed our weekend break

Kate Hodgson replied 182 days ago
The house has an excellent gas central heating system, it is set to 20 degrees, if this was unsuitable for you the control dial is in the lounge which just needs turning and is instant. The information is in the folder or you could have just rang me if unsure. Kind regards, Kate

This was our second stay. The house has lots of charm and has been very tastefully restored, retaining many period features. It is well equipped, well furnished and always lovely and warm in the chillier weather we experienced. The owners haven't skimped on artwork and decorative items. They have made improvements to the courtyard garden since our last stay in 2020, it is a delightful place to sit, getting lots of afternoon and evening sun. The house is well situated being a short walk to the town centre, provided you don't mind a bit of a hill. In the other direction it's a few yards to the footbridge over the Tees leading to lots of lovely walks. Parking was never an issue, we parked right outside the cottage every time almost as if others had left it for us, which perhaps they had. We can highly recommend the house and location and and would happily stay there again, or in one of Mill Granary's other cottages. I'm sure they will be just as good, judging by the care lavished on Cheeseborough House.

Park the car at the front and enter into a warm, comfortable and welcoming home from home. Christmas decorations, a tree with the lights on and some foodie gifts on the table. An excellent start, now get settled in for the week !
Cheeseborough House is ideally situated in Thorngate, a quiet part of the town. The shops, which cater for most of your needs, are just a short walk away and the house has easy access to beautiful riverside walks and to the ' yards ' and other quaint areas of the historic town. Everything is compact and so close at hand that we didn't use the car all week.
Despite the wind and the rain we got out and about every single day knowing that when we got back the house would be nice and warm with comfortable settees and a good selection of books and games and a well equipped kitchen to prepare our meals.
This was our third stay in this house which speaks for itself. We love the house and its situation and we love what the town offers. We have stayed here in the autumn, in the spring and now in winter. Perhaps our next visit will be in the summer to get the full benefits from the beautiful enclosed rear garden.
Out thanks to Kate for making our stay so memorable, so comfortable, so relaxing and so much the perfect ' home from home '.

Our second visit to Cheeseborough House with family as the accommodation and location is second to none. The cottage was extremely cosy and comfortable with all our needs catered for. A great base to explore the local attractions i.e. Bowes Museum.
Although the cottage is in the town, it was very quiet with plenty of available parking spaces. We found the town's shops, bars and restaurants to have a more vibrant buzz than last year indicating they are thankfully recovering from the Covid pandemic. We hope to stay at Cheeseborough again in the future.

Cheeseborough House is exactly how we expected . Very cosy and immaculate. The cottage is just round the corner from lovely river and an easy walk to Eggleston Abbey and the Town Centre is close by too.
Kate was very understanding and let us change our dates from early March to later in the year.
And the welcome treat left by her was a lovely gesture , which we thoroughly enjoyed. Thanks.

Situated just off the main road this house was in a quiet location and only a few minutes walk to the shops and great selection of places to eat. Only a minute walk to the river and there are some lovely walks from the door. The house was like a home from home and the courtyard was a sun trap.
Depending on how far you want to drive there are various places to visit. Can highly recommend High Force, Low Force and our favourite was Gibsons cave all accessed by walks from Bowlees Visitor Centre. Cragside and Seaton Delaval are NT properties a long drive away but in our opinion worth the visit. Seaham beach for collecting sea glass and Saltburn for the cliff tramway were great places to get some sea air. It is also worth taking some of the quieter roads to explore the amazing scenery.
Everyone in the shops, restaurants and cafes we visited were really friendly and helpful. This is a really good base from which to explore and equally a lovely place to sit for rest and relaxation.

The cottage is welcoming and homely. The kitchen/dining room can easily accommodate four adults, love the metal dining table. Everything worked, plenty of space in the fridge/freezer/oven. Well equipped and plenty of crockery, no need to wait for the dishwasher to finish.

The bedrooms are spacious and again well equipped with hanging/drawer space.

The cottage is at the quiet end of town, with lovely easy walks to historical castles/abbeys nearby.

The location of Cheeseborough House is perfect, so quiet and so convenient for the town and castle & museum, all within walking distance. The house was warm, comfortable & well equipped. We particularly enjoyed the secluded sunny courtyard and playing games in the evening. Plenty of car parking for our two cars just outside the door. All good :-)

If you want a holiday where you don't always have to get in the car to go places this will work for you. The cottage is on the edge of the market town and a few houses up from the river and the bridge where you can follow a couple of walks - the ruins of the castle are well worth a visit, as is Egglestone abbey. Bowes museum is a short walk, an amazing building with lots of interesting exhibits. Eggleston gardens, Raby Castle, and High Force waterfall are a short drive, and a longer drive takes you to Beamish museum. You could easily visit Durham. The town itself is interesting for a stroll around and plenty of places to eat (watch our for the closing days, not all the same). Aside from the good location, the cottage itself was lovely, comfortable and welcoming, lots of comfy sofas and chair to lounge in and a great courtyard garden we made lots of us of - we were very happy with it!

Situated in a quiet street, Cheeseborough House is in an ideal location for accessing local amenities and touring the area. The cottage has been decorated in keeping with its character and history and has a lovely garden with seating areas which get sun most of the day. The cottage is within walking distance of takeaways, shops and restaurants and also local attractions like the wonderful Bowes Museum and the castle itself. A drive away is the High Force waterfall and Raby Castle.

Cheeseborough house is a beautiful character property it was an extremely comfortable and a very well appointed cottage for 4 adults. The location of the property was excellent, in Barnard Castle itself but was still extremely quiet and it was great to have a lovely private walled garden. The surrounding area and places to visit were within easy reach and the countryside around it was beautiful. A relaxing stay, in a beautiful property which I would thoroughly recommend to others and will hopefully going back to.

We absolutely loved this cottage, it was full of character and original features but with a fresh feel. Every aspect was excellent. After long country walks we loved coming back and lighting a fire in the kitchen and being cozy and chatting around the table. The people locally in the shops and restaurants were really friendly and made us feel at home. The location is perfect for the town and I would highly recommend both Cheese borough House and Barnard Castle.

This was our first stay at Cheeseborough House and it is of the high standards for comfort, equipment and cleanliness set by Kate at her properties. We have been staying at Church Cottage for several years. This property is located in a quite corner of the town a short walk for shops restaurants etc. with easy parking. The town itself is well place for exploring the lovely area.

Cheeseborough House is ideally located within Barnard Castle- on a quiet street with plenty of parking but handy enough for the town itself and surrounding walks.
The cottage was spotless and had all of the home comforts you need. The back garden was such a sun trap even in September.
The homemade lemon cake was lovely and an unexpected surprise on arrival.
Highly recommend Cheeseborough House- even no live TV signal didn't dampen the enjoyment.
Thank you

Great you had such a lovely break away at Cheeseborough House and enjoyed it so much. ( just a note to future guests, the TV mast station serving Barnard Castle has burned down and no one has any TV reception until the new one is built, which could be Christmas. The house has excellent Wifi, so catch up TV can be watched as well as Netflix and Amazon) Many thanks, Kate

Overall we were very pleased. Cheeseborough is a high standard and comfortable place to stay. Far better than many of the numerous self caters we have stayed previously. A beautiful and sympathetic restoration of an old stone weavers cottage. The courtyard garden was a delightful feature.
There were two minor concerns. The lounge sofas were a bit low and - combined with a polished wood floor and loose rug - made getting up a bit difficult for two oldies, and it was a long climb up a steep staircase to get to a loo - again more age related rather than the house!
A very pleasant stay, highly recommended, and we would definitely stay there again.

This was our second stay in Cheeseborough House. We find it a most comfortable cottage - clean, warm and most welcoming. It is for us in the perfect position. A quiet street, near the river with its paths and within walking distance of the town with its fine array of independent shops - in fact we never used our car all week. Barnard Castle, like the cottage, is most welcoming. All the people we met were friendly and helpful and you just feel as if you are one of the locals ! It can be a busy town but there are so many places where you can find peace, quiet and relaxation.
The weather we had was perfect - hot and sunny and we made good use of the excellent courtyard garden at the cottage.
We must thank Kate for her understanding and cooperation at this very testing time - we appreciated that very much.
We love the cottage, we love the area and I'm sure we will be back.

As we hadn't had a stay away from home since the March lockdown we booked this cottage to give us a relaxing change. We weren't disappointed. Everything about the cottage was perfect for our needs in these difficult times. We parked the car at the front door and it stayed there for the week. The town with its local independent shops was just a short walk away and excellent riverside paths were very close. The cottage was clean, warm and exceptionally comfortable. We particularly liked the way that this historic house had been modernised but yet retained a lot of its old charm with original fireplaces, the stone flagged floor in the kitchen and a selection of appropriate furnishings. The rear courtyard garden was a beautiful feature but unfortunately the weather restricted our use of it. Barnard Castle is a lovely town and the friendly people made us welcome wherever we went. We rate the cottage very highly, so highly in fact we have booked it again for Christmas week.

Great you are coming back for Christmas, the house is so cosy and Barnard Castle has beautiful Christmas lights all over the town. It looks amazing on an evening stroll around the old market town. Thank you for choosing us again, Kate.

Lovely week spent at Cheeseborough House.

Cheeseborough House is lovely. Very well equipped. Lovely sun trap in the courtyard. No problem with parking right outside the house. Less than a minute's walk to the River Tees with its lovely walks. 5 minute's walk into Barnard Castle with supermarkets, at least 2 chippies, restaurants and pubs as well as independent shops for knick-knacks and antiques. Excellent extra work done to make it feel very safe from the Covid Pandemic point of view. We'll definitely be back.

Another fabulous stay at Cheeseborough House - a lovely, relaxing 'home from home'. Still loving the walled garden; the super-comfy beds; easy access to the river and the town - and the new kitchen.

Thank Kate - as always.

We found Cheeseborough House to be very comfortable and convenient. The house is fitted out well and the garden area is very nice to sit in. The selection of films, games, books and CDs was good, and the utensils provided in the kitchen were thorough and sensible. It was nice that things like cling film and foil had been thought of, as well as shopping bags. It would have been good to have had a clothes airer for when the weather meant the garden line couldn't be used.

A few features of the house were broken or impractical - the shaver plug being hidden behind the bathroom mirror, the little fountain in the garden not switching on, the signal in the back bedroom TV not being there for certain channels (mainly the BBC ones). However the loss of these didn't materially affect our stay.

The position of the house in Barnard Castle was fine, and we didn't experience any issues with getting parking outside. The town is in a great place to enjoy all three of Northumberland, The Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. The latter were lovely to drive through - the road out to Bolton Castle was great; the other drive that was stunning was up to Brownlees Visitor Centre for the Low and High Force walk.

Kate Hodgson replied more than 1 year ago
Great that you enjoyed Cheeseborough House and Barnard Castle. The water feature was already in the house when we bought it, and its just a small pound really, there is nothing to work on it, just pretty to look at. Sorry that you found the shaver socket awkward to use. I think the thunder last week will have made the one upstairs TV need re tuning. If you had asked me I would have come and done it immediately for you. Enjoy the rest of the summer, many thanks Kate.

My wife and I stayed for one week in March. We stayed in that area primarily to do some walking in Upper Teesdale. Cheeseborough House is in an ideal location, being a short walk to the centre of Barnard Castle yet close to the river and open countryside. We had been concerned about availability of parking in Thorngate but it was never a problem. There were always spaces, usually directly in front of the house. We were very impressed with the standard of decor, the house seemed to have been decorated and furnished by somebody (the owners, we believe) with a very keen eye for design. It was all in keeping with the age and character of Cheeseborough House. The house was quiet, the beds were very comfortable, the gas fire emitted lots of heat when needed (we did not light the solid fuel burner in the kitchen). The courtyard garden looked delightful, although the weather was a bit cold for us to use it. All in all, a thoroughly enjoyable stay in a splendid small house in a beautiful and characterful small town. We can thoroughly recommend Cheeseborough House and it's on our (short) list of places we would definitely go back to.

Cheeseborough House is a great location to explore the area (the only problem is that it's at the bottom of a hill!). Barnard Castle is a lovely town and the locals seem friendly. The Bowes Museum and Raby Castle are worth exploring.
The house is very well presented and has everything the visitor needs including very comfortable beds. The kitchen can be chilly but we were given an extra basket of logs for the range which helped. There is a lovely courtyard garden which must be great in the summer.

We were delighted with Cheeseborough House from the moment we walked in. It was cosy and comfortably furnished with a nicely decorated Christmas Tree and the house was so warm and welcoming. Everything we needed was provided with extras such as nice quality shower gel and body lotion. There was a welcome tray with wine, cake and chocolates which was a nice touch. The beds were large and very comfortable with crisp cotton sheets and the showers were good with plenty of hot water. Nothing at all to complain about ....... we loved our week in Castle Barnard with its quirky shops and friendly people. We would not hesitate in recommending to family and friends.

Researching our family history and having never visited Barnard Castle previously, we were looking for a convenient location in the Teesdale area. We were absolutely amazed to find that a family address from 100 years ago was now being let as holiday accomodation, consequently no time was wasted in obtaining a booking for a few days. The cottage has been beautifully transformed retaining many original features and offers everything required for an enjoyable stay. Unusual for a listed town cottage, the rooms are spacious, the beds and furnishings providing comfort. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and hope to return when the weather is warmer. Our ancestors would be stunned.

Great location in quiet road near the river and within easy walking of Barnard Castle. Cottage is gorgeous and very cosy. Beds are very comfortable. Kitchen has everything needed for cooking at home or you can easily pop up into town for a pub meal, curry, Italian. Plenty of cafes do breakfasts if you want a treat. Easy drive into walking areas of High Force, Up to Cotherstone area to walk around the reservoirs or into Weardale for some other great options.

Cottage was exactly as advertised on the website. Very comfortable with a lovely enclosed garden.
Lots of pots, pans & utensils. Could do with a little cupboard for food brought in by guests but that's a very minor point.
Loved the location, quiet but close to the town. Lots of fabulous places to visit nearby and lots of leaflets in the cottage to help choose.
Thank you.

We enjoyed our stay immensely. This cottage is central to hiking, shopping and decent restaurants. It has every thing you can ask of a rental plus many little comfort extras. The garden was a great treat on those days we could use it. It definitely gives a sense of history while supplying modern day comforts. Delightful, beautifully renovated cottage with fascinating features and a sunny courtyard - in a perfect location with lots of lovely walking from the door. An interesting variety of small independent shops in Barnard Castle.

Booking process was easy and straightforward; friendly owner Kate left cake and fresh milk for our arrival, returning thoughtfully the following day with a parasol for use in the courtyard.
Some written details on the history of the cottage would be a most interesting addition to the information provided.
We appreciated the provision of non-perfumed handwash etc but, unfortunately, it actually had rather a peculiar smell!

There is an easy, pleasant walk from the cottage (avoiding the town) to the Bowes Museum which has an excellent cafe which, along with the museum shop, is accessible without an admission ticket.
A more lengthy walk from base is along the river to Cotherstone returning on the opposite bank having refuelled at the Fox and Hounds.

Transport is required to access the walk from Low to High Force returning either along the river or on the opposite side over the fields. Park at Bowlees Visitor Centre - in itself well worth the trip.

In summary, the four of us (two couples) loved staying in Cheeseborough House and would definitely recommend it.

Instantly felt at home at Cheeseborough House! It is a great cottage, in a convenient location, that is superbly furnished and exceptionally clean.
My only criticism is that I'd looked forward since booking to sitting down and enjoying a meal in front of the real fire in the dining area, and the contrary British weather meant it was just too hot to even contemplate! (24 degrees on a Bank Holiday weekend, who'd have believed it!) Instead we relaxed and enjoyed the beautiful walled courtyard.
I would happily have stayed longer and without hesitation I would recommend the cottage.

I'm very sorry I didn't get to meet you as I was helping my 85 year old mother and it was me who fell down the stairs and strained my ankle so badly a week later I can still barely walk. Another trip from Oz to one of Kate's cottages. Great location, quiet with easy parking right on the edge of the shops.
Fantastic modern amenities with all of the character charm of the area. Two great ensuite double rooms, and the ground floor was big enough for our family gathering of 15 + 2 toddlers on Easter Sunday.
Another cottage with great heating and hot water - apologies for the gas bill, our Australian blood is thin for the snow and rain.
See you next time we return to the UK to visit family.

Had a superb short holiday doing very little. Having parked the car just outside the front door it’s possible to go for long walks, shop, dine etc without getting back in the vehicle again if you want. The only two improvements we would have liked were better weather and strangely a frying pan. Everything else was spot on.

Kate Hodgson replied more than 1 year ago
Glad you enjoyed your winter weekend break, you must come back again in warmer weather the courtyard is so lovely to sit out in. Oops sorry about the missing frying pan I was changing it and forgot to put the new one in the house. Many thanks Kate.

Very enjoyable 5 night stay. Nice wood burning range in the kitchen and plenty of logs to burn. Nice rooms and well fit out. Short 5 minute walk into the village. All in all a great short break.

We spent a wonderful 4 nights at Cheeseborough House in Barnard Castle as a getaway location for a special birthday. We have previously stayed at one of Kate's other properties in the area, Church Cottage, and we were delighted to return to the area. Barnard Castle was a nice base, with some good food options nearby whether you wanted to eat out, get a takeaway, or stay in the cottage and cook using the well-stocked kitchen. The bedrooms are spacious, warm and comfortable and the living room full of books, DVDs and games - ideal for spending a bit of time relaxing in the cottage. Thanks for the excellent stay and no-doubt we will be back again!

Lovely cottage in the delightful little town of Barnard Castle. Everything you could possibly need. We love the open fire in the kitchen which was well stocked with wood. The cottage is full to bursting with original features and is really comfortable and clean.

The area is ideal for walking The Teesdale Way and any number of beautiful local walks. Lots of pubs and places to eat, particularly liked No.8 The Bank where we enjoyed brunch.
Can’t wait to return!

We had a very relaxing week at Cheeseborough House which was very homely and ideal for town. It provided a good base to explore the magnificent scenery in the Durham Dales. Free parking adjacent to the House was a bonus. Although well equipped, there were some minor niggles such as absence of a kitchen jug and the awkward positioning of the microwave. A landline telephone was also advertised in the property details but could not be located. Instructions for rubbish collections could have been clearer.

This did not detract from a very enjoyable stay in delightful surroundings and we would love to visit again.

Kate Hodgson replied more than 1 year ago
Glad you enjoyed your tour of the Durham Dales. Sorry you thought we had a landline phone the house just has WiFi. Hope to see you another time, kind regards, Kate.

Teesdale is one of the delights of the northern Pennines and Barnard Castle is gem at the heart of the valley. Cheesborough House is a beautifully presented stone terraced cottage ideally located within 5 minutes walking distance of the centre of the town. The cottage is very well furnished and all that a visitor could need is fully catered for - and on-street parking was never a problem in what is a very quiet street, despite the close proximity to the centre of town. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we very much hope to return.

Great cottage; extremely comfortable, good quality, tasteful furnishings; pretty walled garden; river less than a minutes walk away. Fresh flowers and a sweet home-baked treat await you on arrival. Lovely open fire in the kitchen. The owners really do create fabulous holiday homes for us to enjoy - thanks again Kate!

Barnard Castle is a great little town for perusing little independent shops. They have a fabulous chocolate shop (Chocolate Fayre) and a wonderful micro pub (Firkin Alley) with very friendly hosts and regulars. The town also has a good choice of cafes and pubs. It was nice to enjoy fish and chips outside - sitting by the castle overlooking the gorgeous countryside.

Great walks from the door along the Teesdale Way.

The cottage is in an excellent location a short walk uphill to the town and 5 minutes drive from the Bowes museum. It is also very close to the river and the walks along the river bank. The cottage itself is well equipped, comfortable and clean with an enclosed courtyard at the back with seating and a water feature. The beds are comfortable and both bedrooms have en suite. It is an ideal place to stay to explore the local area.

Lovely house at the bottom of town. Steep walk into town where there are many shops and places to eat.
Ideal for visiting High Force and there are many nice walks from the town.
Well equipped.
Very pleasant patio area with comfortable seating if the sun comes out.
Parking available at front of house but may not get a space directly in front. This may necessitate carrying bags/suitcase for a short distance.
Bedrooms very comfortable with lovely en suites.
Gas fire difficult to turn on if required.
'Kate' very attentive and helpful. Responded quickly to request for washing machine tabs and bin liners.

A sympathetically restored weavers cottage in an ideal location in Barnard Castle. Only 5 minutes walk (admittedly uphill) into the town centre where there is a good selection of shops, restaurants and pubs.
Cottage is very comfortable and well equipped and has a lovely walled garden at the rear which catches the sun most of the day.
Ideally located for touring the area with lovely riverside walks straight from the front door.
Highly recommended.

Cheeseborough house is an immaculately clean, well presented property full of character and comfort in a lovely Teesdale village. A generously equipped kitchen, two beautiful bathrooms, comfortable beds and heritage features were complemented by beautiful decor that made us feel both special and at ease. Thoughtful touches by generous hosts, from fairy lights in the yard to a welcoming plate of cakes, helped to make our stay wonderfully memorable.

We had a wonderful February week in this beautiful cottage, 3 generations together (my parents, my husband and me, and our 3 month old baby. The cottage is excellently located a quick (though steep!) walk to all the shops you could want, but also less than 100 yards from the river and great country walks.
The beds are super comfortable, the living room has relaxing sofas and a powerful gas fire, but the winning feature of this cottage is the eat-in kitchen with its fabulous open fire. We spent hours each evening enjoying the flames whilst we ate- hugely atmospheric for a unique winter getaway. Highly recommended!

We have just returned from a fantastic week in Barnard Castle. Our stay at Cheeseborough Cottage was first class.
I would thoroughly recommend this gorgeous little cottage, which was immaculately clean, spacious, warm & very cosy. It had everything we could of needed & the little town was fantastic too.
Kate the owner had very kindly put some milk in the fridge & baked some delicious home-made scones ready for our arrival.
We were delighted & thought this was such a lovely gesture.
We can not wait to return for our next stay.

Just had a lovely short break in Cheeseborough House with my husband and 2 children. It was really interesting to hear a little of the house's history, from Kate, the very welcoming owner, (light and heating on and scones on the table a nice touch after a long journey). Great to stay in such an obviously old and quirky property, whilst enjoying all the comforts of modern life. The house was very well equipped, in perfect working order and all of obviously of good quality, whilst still feeling comfortable and a real home from home, (we particularly enjoyed the open fire in the kitchen and all the board games). It was also in a great position, easily walkable to river walks and hungry ducks and also into Barnard Castle itself, which is a quaint old market town, with loads of independent shops, and cafes. The people were all very friendly and welcoming too, my kids especially liked the Sugar Mouse sweetie shop! Also good that there are 3 nice playparks within walking distance. We only saw a little of the surrounding area, as we were only there a short time, but the Bowlees Visitor Centre and waterfall trail is worth a visit , as is Eggleston Abbey.
Our only complaint is that we would have liked to stay longer!

Beautiful house with beautiful furnishings and attention to detail. Courtyard garden is absolutely lovely - with selection of garden furniture to enjoy relaxing on hot days and balmy evenings. The beds are wonderfully comfy - helped by high quality bedding. It was a joy to hear the owl again. Love the stable door from the kitchen to the courtyard garden. Kate always leaves a sweet little homemade treat for her guests on arrival - which is a lovely personal touch. The kitchen/dining room with its big chunky table and open fireplace is my favourite room.

River walks a stones throw away from the cottage. A stroll into the lovely, historic Barnard Castle with plentiful cafes, restaurants and pubs. I loved the view of the old town with it's backdrop of hills and trees on the way back to the cottage from town.

Bowes Museum is a 10/15 minute walk from the cottage. Raby Caste and High Force Waterfall a short drive a way.

We'll be back next year.

Barnard Castle proved to be a surprisingly good location for a summer break. It's a good basis to explore the area (e.g. country walks, castles, Teesdale, Durham) and offers facilities like Bowes museum, shops and restaurants.
Cheeseborough house was a cosy typical English cottage. We immediately felt at home. The house is complete (good Wifi, cooking facilities, furniture, car parking in front of the house etc.) and has a courtyard to enjoy the sun and have dinner "al fresco". The owner was very friendly and helpful.

I found the Mill Granary website and was very impressed with it and booked Cheesborough for one week in July. My sister and brother-in-law were with us for the first few days. The cottage was wonderful, perfect location in Barnard Castle, quiet yet near to everything we needed. The weather was superb which meant we could enjoy the outside of Cheesborough as much as the inside which had everything we needed during our stay.

Kate and Richard were terrific responding to my queries whilst I was booking and we met them briefly during our stay when they were helpful in telling us about the surrounding area. I wouldn't hesitate to return, perhaps at a different time of year to enjoy the cosy fires. A really enjoyable holiday.

We had a wonderful stay at this accommodation. It was a wonderful location with many walks along the River which was only a 2 minute walk away. Children enjoyed feeding the ducks on the pathway by the river and also playing on the playground which was only 3 minutes walk.
Visited Beamish which was a wonderful day out, Durham city and Shildon railway museum. All were excellent. Weather was good which made a difference to us.

Enjoyed sitting on in the garden, with the water feature switched on and relaxing in the evening and for breakfast.

Very pleasant owner and lost of information in the house.

What a great place to stay! If you love walking then the location of the house is ideal, you can walk from the door step if you wish, or you are within easy driving distance of some beautiful countryside. The house itself is a wonderful place, it was lovely and clean on arrival, the cakes are a nice touch! Everything is well appointed, we especially liked the open fireplace in the kitchen, and the lounge is a nice place to cosy up on a chilly evening, the court yard garden looks like a great place to be in the summer months. We are looking forward to staying at the other Mill Granary properties, and we would recommend Cheeseborough House to anyone looking for a cosy retreat.

We stayed over the Christmas period. The location of the cottage is fantastic with many amenities within walking distance. The cottage us well equipped with everything you need for a holiday. We particularly liked the log fire in the dining kitchen. We look forward to returning soon.

My husband and I stayed here for a few days in October and it was beautiful. Excellent area for walking and sightseeing, very handy for local shops and pubs. Excellent accommodation with a beautiful little courtyard garden.

Ideally located for a short walk in the centre of Barnard Castle for the weekly market, or a bite to eat, and just as well placed for a meander into the countryside. Thought it's just as tempting to stay in and enjoy the wonderful house. The only downside? Having to leave....

Another wonderful addition to the Mill Granary family............

A really lovely place to stay! Tastefully decorated throughout; well equipped kitchen; cosy family dining area (and great for spending lots of hours playing board games); fabulous, private, walled garden; lots of original features to appreciate; high quality bed linen and comfy beds that ensured a good night's sleep; a very brief stroll to view the river (or start one of many picturesque walks) and it's in a very quiet area but less than 5 minutes walk into the main part of the delightful Barnard Castle (with a fine selection of little shops; cafes and restaurants). We're looking forward to our next stay already.

Lovely house with helpful, friendly owner. Arrived to find homemade scones and jam, with fresh milk in fridge. Location is quiet, parking is easy outside the cottage and everything is in walking distance. Lots of footpaths near the river to explore.

We were delighted to be Kate and Richard's first guests at Cheeseborough House, having stayed previously at each of their other properties. It is extremely comfortable, beautifully decorated and very well equipped. We had some splendid walks straight from the front door and it was great to be so close to the centre of Barnard Castle, which is a bustling market town with plenty of places to eat and drink.
