This was our 4th booking at Treowen. We married there 20th years ago and returned for our 10th and 20th anniversaries plus for a holiday in 2015.
This time we had a party for 60 people on the Saturday night and then 20 of us spent the rest of the week enjoying the local area. We love the place. A particular plus of this venue is that it is a practical, well loved, family home. It is not pristine but comes with everything you need resulting in a relaxing atmosphere. The owner is very helpful and friendly and on hand if there are any issues - not that we had any.
The proof of the pudding is in the rebooking. We hope to be back yet again for our 25th celebrations.

We had our wedding at Treowen in June. We liked that we could stay for the weekend and it is a bit of a blank canvas to make the wedding our own. The grounds are gorgeous and we were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day so that we could have the wedding ceremony in the garden over looking the Welsh countryside, then welcome drinks and mini golf also in the gardens. Our wedding guests loved exploring the house and raved about how amazing the wedding was with a relaxed atmosphere. The owners were always so helpful whenever I needed to contact them before the wedding, and were easily contactable during our stay.

We stayed in Treowen for a long weekend with family and friends to celebrate our birthdays and our wedding. We couldn't have chosen a more special venue, the house has so much character and history and the gardens are absolutely gorgeous.
The kitchen is perfect for prepping a meal for a big group, everyone loved the priest hole, and we had the best time playing a murder mystery in the Oak Room. The view is absolutely amazing, it felt like the sheep were celebrating with us on our wedding day. Loved it all, huge thanks to John and Dick for hosting us, and we'll be back for sure for our anniversary!

I love Treowen, such a wonderful place, perfect for social gatherings; everything you need, lots of space, set in stunning gardens and scenery. Nobody wanted to leave! The brothers are really helpful and friendly. Had my 50th here, then my 60th, can I wait for my 70th?

We have stayed at Treowen before over new year with 5 other families.
The house is brilliantly set up for large numbers, the dining room works particularly well as does the kitchen go mass catering.
It’s a very unique house and we love the character. The bedrooms are great and the large dorm bedroom for our teenagers/twenty somethings. It’s a very warm house and cosy during the winter.
The gardens are lovely and their are great walks from the door.

A fantastic place to get away from it all. It has the benefit of predominantly having bedrooms for two people making it perfect for a weekend away with a large group of friends. The dining room seats us all comfortably and the kitchen easily works for large numbers. Highly recommended.

Wow, what an incredible venue. Photos simply do not do the house justice, my guests and I were completely blown away by the grandeur and scale of the place. We stayed for three nights with friends and family for my thirtieth birthday celebrations (which is on Halloween) so the setting couldn’t have been more perfect. I am already desperate to return!

Treowen is just one of those places that is hard to describe. This is the third time we have visited as a large group of friends, and it has been just perfect for that once again.
The setting is magnificent, the house can make you feel as if you are lord or lady of the manor!
Loads of space inside and out, and plenty of quiet corners if you just want a bit of space for yourself.
The owners have managed the difficult balance between maintaining its' traditional charm and being up to modern standards. If you want the latest contemporary features in a holiday house, this is not for you, but it is a comfortable, warm and delightful place to spend a few days.

We had the most memorable weekend of our lives at Treowen for our wedding and can't wait to return in the future. The house is stunning, the pictures don't do it justice. Each room has such character and it is Huge. The gardens are so well maintained. We didn't get a chance to enjoy the lake but would next time. Danielle the manager was a delight.
All the kit you need for a weekend away, birthday celebration, or wedding. It is a dry venue so we DIY'd everything but there are plenty of recommended suppliers on the website.
We also had "Stable Genuis" Band in the evening who rocked and the dancefloor was a perfect size.
Our guests loved that there were lots of different rooms to explore and relax in too.

We had pretty high hopes of our experience at Treowen, the reviews and photos being so positive, so beautiful, and atmospheric. My only concern before arriving was that with a house so old it might have a few understandable drafts, bad water pressure etc.

This house surpassed all expectations - it was very warm, immaculately clean, with great showers, comfy beds, and an incredibly well-equipped kitchen that is perfectly designed to cater for groups of 35 staying in the house (as we were).

It is very clear that a huge amount of care and thought has gone into how this house is prepared to host large groups, from the ample number of bathrooms, to the enormous tea urn and cooking pots, and perfectly located bar area.

A house with that amount of history and of that size demands expert and constant attention, and it is evident that the house could not be better loved and cared for by its owners and keepers. Having spoken to them all during the stay, their passion for it was totally inspiring, and infectious.

It’s quite something to stay in a property that feels like it should be a museum or a film set, but to feel like it’s purpose is still, after almost 400 years, to host and be lived in - that is even more special.

This house is really something extraordinary. We couldn’t recommend a stay here more.

We spent the weekend at Treowen with our family and friends, and enjoyed this property not just for our full wedding day celebrations (including Ceilidh), but for the weekend as a whole to extend the celebration and the visit with many international guests. Our guests regularly remarked on the beauty of the venue, both the house and the surrounding environment. We are beyond happy to have picked Treowen as the location for our celebrations, and hope we will find an excuse to return again sometime in the future.

Treowen is a quirky Elizabethan mansion which has somehow been preserved very well. It suited our family very well as it is a bit rough around the edges as a mansion of that age should be. The utensils and culinary equipment for large parties (up to 50) was just what is needed.
The bathrooms and en-suite toilets all worked well.
beautiful wooden floorboards, don't expect wall to wall carpeting.

I spent a long weekend with 15 of my family at Treowen. The house and location is unbeatable - and has beautifully tended gardens. The younger members of the party liked the games room, were fascinated by the priest hole, and had plenty of outdoor space for football, rounders, hide and seek and croquet. Would love to visit again in the future.

We stayed at Treowen for my 30th birthday, and everyone found the house comfortable and beautiful. The bedrooms are gorgeous, and the gardens are beautifully maintained. Danielle was very understanding when we arrived late, and was super helpful in telling us everything we needed to know about the house - we'd also been able to view several months earlier which was a great opportunity. Some rooms are very warm, others a bit more chilly (we spent lots of time as a group in the long drawing room and the dining room, both lovely and warm). We had all the equipment we needed to cook and serve meals for 30 (love the dishwasher, done in 7 mins!) Would recommend putting labels on the doors because the house is enormous and there are a LOT of doors, so it helps people to navigate. I very much hope to return for another big birthday in the future!

Following the separation of Covid, the whole family met at Treowen for a reunion. The house was warm and comfortable with a welcoming feel to it. We had a wonderful weekend, it suited three generations perfectly. Help from the owners was available but not needed, appreciated the contact details though. So much room to get together or separate, it worked really well.

We hosted a family party of 80 over the weekend. Treowen has the perfect old bones to accommodate people for supper, drinks and dancing. There are plenty of comfortable rooms for guests to sleep in and overall the house has a wonderful dramatic feel. Daniele, John and Dick were more than helpful about arrangements. The kitchen is well equipped and has a lovely big table to gather around.

A wonderful venue for a big party. Already familiar to us from 17 years ago when our eldest got married there.

Everything is available for an extended family holiday and then the house and grounds can easily cope with another 50 people.

Cooking equipment expects large gatherings and a wonderful industrial dishwasher does all the cleaning for you in next to no time!

A thoroughly easy place in which to enjoy yourselves and plenty of quiet spaces to lose everyone else if you want to!

We were returning after getting married at Treowen 20 years ago. The building was more magnificent than we remembered. Treowen perfectly balances being a grand and imposing house with being somewhere you feel relaxed and comfortable. The beds were comfortable, the kitchen pretty well equiped. Cocktails on the belvedere at 6 - what could be better? We're already working out when we can return.

We had our wedding here at Treowen and stayed Friday to Monday.
Alls I can say is everything exceeded my expectations. The house is just stunning. The grounds are so beautiful. Danielle, John and Dick have all been so attentive and helpful. There was no question too silly to ask. The house is well looked after and the kitchen well stocked with all appliances.
The beds are so comfortable. There is everything you could possibly need to not have to leave the grounds for the whole stay!(Besides food maybe) a cosy evening in the oak room with the roaring fire is a must.
We will definitely be back again!

I fell for this place when I visited it to review it in 2019. When we were finally able to get together, we absolutely loved our week at Treowen. It was a perfect getaway for our Bible study week. It was spotlessly clean and despite being a very old house, was very comfortable and functional. We struggled with the WiFi in the Long Drawing Room but we managed with an internet connection on the EE network. That was the only downside, which I find almost guilty mentioning given that this venue is not about connectivity but is a superb getaway in a superb location.

We stayed at Treowen for a week at the end of which we hosted a Golden Wedding party there.
The rooms are all tastefully furnished with magnificent items. The beds are comfortable and cosy. The house is warm and not too hot. The views from the windows are stunning. Catering for ourselves was easy, and the caterers we used for our party adapted easily to the facilities - they had been before so were familiar with the kitchen and Banqueting Hall.
We all loved staying at Treowen - our ages ranged from 1 to 77 and everyone had a blast! The several children loved the house - including the Priest Hole - and it was great for Hide and Seek. The grounds were perfect for our Easter Egg Hunt.
We visited Raglan Farm Park (twice) - excellent and very near by, as well as Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo, a bit further and a much-enjoyed visit. We went for a circular walk from the house using the local OS map and everyone enjoyed it - from 3 year olds upwards.
The house was just perfect for our Golden Wedding party - the Banqueting Hall easily accommodated our 54 guests (several coming just for the party) both for a smart meal and for the ceilidh which followed.
We can whole-heartedly recommend our caterers - Catherine and Michael John - who were very accommodating and served delicious food, as well as the Ceilidh band "The Life of Riley" who got us all - everyone from our oldest guest to our youngest dancer (3) - twirling around and enjoying the time of our lives.

Having been before I knew what to expect -- Treowen excellently located, a beautiful house in beautiful grounds, and very ably managed. Suitable for large groups and easy to hire.

This is the second time we have gathered as an extended family at Treowen and, once again, we loved it. In a beautiful setting, we consider ourselves very fortunate to spend a weekend in this stunning, historic house. It suits all ages as there is plenty of space and given those stairs, plenty of exercise too! With a party of 40, the dining room and drawing room were perfect for coming together as one, and when the rain cleared, the gardens and views came to the fore. John, his brother and Danielle have put a lot of work into the place and continue to restore and improve the house, using lockdown to good advantage. Thank you very much - it was a pleasure to stay at Treowen.

Totally magical break from all the Covid concerns. The house is both majestic and charming and all felt at home instantly. Huge grounds and loads of space inside too. Worked perfectly for our group (and 3 dogs) with enough space and activities for all to do their own thing and a dining room that allowed very social evening meals. Spent most of our time in the house but lots of things to do locally and indeed we did go canoeing on the canal - enjoyable even with the rain! We're all very keen to return and get back into the Treowen way of life. The only reason to hesitate in recommending to others is that you might want to book the same time as us! John was a great host and always contactable to answer questions.

The atmosphere of this house is just wonderful and we all love it here. Obviously being an old house it can be drafty in a couple of places, especially during this extreme weather! But Treowen held firm and, after all, that's what open fires and blankets are for!

Many thanks to John and Dick for welcoming us back and for their assistance when needed!

The fact that this was our twelfth Christmas at Treowen speaks for itself as does our rebooking for 2021. It is a lovely house set in a beautiful part of the Welsh borders. On any occasions when doubt has been expressed about whether we should rebook for two years ahead (very rare) the young people have made ir very clear that they would disown us if we failed to produce another Christmas at .Treowen. The house and its setting have a magic which could not easily be reproduced elsewhere. We have enjoyed our stays there so much we have recommended it to friends.

This is the 3rd time my friends and I have stayed at Treowen. Its a great place for a Christmas party, cooking facilities to cook a full Christmas dinner. Lots of bedrooms. Lots of rooms for kids to explore and run around. Big dinning room. Stunning grounds for a country walk before a lunch time drink.

Def worth a visit.

Our family of 36 ( not all staying overnight) age ranging from 84 - 3 had a great weekend at Treowen. Hide and seek was easy to play. The kitchen was well equipped. Plenty of room in the dinning room and lounges. Our second visit in four years and everyone said it was the best ever.

Treowen was the perfect place to spend my 50th birthday with friends. We cooked, ate, laughed, reminisced, danced, drank, walked, ran sang, and ate and ate and ate. The house was huge and beautiful, the gardens amazing and the weather perfect. We also had a glorious sunset and a bat in the hallway. Thank you, a birthday to remember.

Treowen is a beautiful historic house, and an amazing place to stay.
We rented the house for a week to have a gathering of friends and family to celebrate my 50th. It is of course a perfect setting, with amazing views and walks, opportunities to go canoeing and mountain biking through the Forest of Dean with the kids, play games on the extensive lawns, wander through the beautiful flower filled gardens and also to relax and enjoy the grandeur of the house itself eating, drinking and dancing with friends.
The interior is very impressive, with 12 gorgeous bedrooms, and everyone who stayed was amazed by the expansiveness and the beautiful period furniture. The dinning room is fantastic place to gather and have extensive meals with long wooden tables, a giant firplace and wooden panelling abounding. It was a pleasure to cook in such a well equipped kitchen. We made good use of the 'oak room' lounge with the fireplace to relax in the evenings, and had a barbecue outside which afforded a great view of the hills.
There were only two tiny hitches - the house was open to the public on Friday (this hadn't been explained till a couple of days before), and also there was some very noisy striming one morning from 8.30am of which we hadn't been made aware, however it must be said that it is difficult to find anywhere more perfect than Treowen, and these were of course concessions that on balance we were more than happy to accept! The owners are friendly, helpful and accommodating. We feel privileged to have stayed at Treowen - thank you John and Dick for your kind welcome!

Treowen was the perfect setting for our wedding. Comfortably accommodating a large party of astonished and delighted guests. Kitchen is superbly equipped for catering, there are loads of toilets and comfy beds. Gardens are absolutely terrific. Warm and hospitable welcome from the owners who are helpful but unobtrusive -, in fact perfect. It was truly a memorable weekend and the house was one of the largest contributors to the long weekend/wedding. Superb and we will be back.

Another wonderful stay at Treowen. It's a brilliant venue for a group of families, or a wedding party. Impressively grand and spacious, but still homely enough to feel welcoming, comfortable and relaxed. Fantastic kitchen for cooking industrial quantities, beautiful grounds and lots of nooks and crannies for quiet time when wanted. Our fifth stay so I feel qualified to highly recommend it for any time of year.

This is the third time we have rented Treowen for a short break and a birthday party. This is a wonderful house and we feel very honoured to be able to spend time here.
The accommodation is plentiful with comfortable beds and lots of bathrooms with steaming hot water. Despite its age Treowen is a warm and friendly place to stay. The views are simply stunning and the gardens are beautiful. The owners are friendly and extremely helpful. Treowen is a very special place.

We rented Treowen for our wedding - all the rooms were clean and ready to use - and everyone one loved the unique building, history and location.
Both the owners (brothers) were very helpful and timely in communication in the months prior to the wedding and accommodated additional visits to the venue from suppliers and for us to make plans for our big day. Being able to do everything yourself and not limited to using selected suppliers - as you would with other venues - gave us the scope to be able to do exactly what we wanted and to our own budget.

I kept forgetting how big the house and rooms were - as well as the outside space - where we had our ceremony (front) and dining (our back around the center tree)
The main hall was perfect for our evening disco and dining room for our buffet.
The house was the perfect setting.

Would love to revisit for a self catering holiday with close friends and family sometime.

I have been coming to Treowen in one capacity or another for over 40 years. Each time I visit, there is some improvement to note, but the essential character of the house remains the same. I have visited in every season, and there has always been something to enjoy, but never can I remember a stay as blessed as this one in terms of the weather. All our guests, many of whom had never visited Treowen before, were blown away.

A group of 16 historical dancers and musicians spent a wonderful few days enjoying the ambience of beautiful Treowen and dancing in every available moment. There are three good dancing spaces although we only used the Great Hall. The self catering was easy to achieve and the kitchen well equipped. You have to remember that it is a historic building without power showers or the like but it more than makes up for this in character and charm. We hope to be back next year.

We returned to Treowen in February to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the festival and it was an amazing 10 days. Both adults and children alike made the most of the warm weather and there was lots of walks and exploring the grounds of Treowen. It has become such a special place to us and eating and living together at Treowen is as much as part of the festival as the music itself. During the festival we have two concerts at Treowen and our audience love the chance to come to the house and experience a bit f its magic for themselves.
Thanks to the Wheelock family for making our time at Treowen so brilliant.

Treowen was the perfect place for our group of friends, archaeology volunteers, to get together and to visit various places in South Wales. The house is a lovely, unspoilt Jacobean building so it has a quirky layout and irregular floors/stairs, a few drafts and lots of creaks but it was fabulous to stay in a genuinely historic building which has been restored so sensitively. The Dining Room leant itself to candlelit meals, the Oak Room to cosy fireside evenings and the Banqueting Hall to a spot of historical dance. The kitchen was pretty well equipped for catering for a group and the grounds were well kept and great for a wander and to look at the wonderful views. The owners were really helpful, easy to contact and quick to respond to any request.
We're looking forward to coming here again.

My new husband and I hosted our wedding at Treowen House. It was such a wonderful venue and everyone who attended said that it was great! Our Ancient Greece theme worked perfectly!

The house was just the right size for everyone who was staying and it felt so personal, everyone got to know each other really well.

The rooms were roomy and everyone was impressed by the individuality of each room.

It was so beautiful and wonderful, we all had a great weekend!

I was married at Treowen in 2008., and had the most amazing weekend there, and it was my wish to have my big birthday there 10 years later. In this time the house had undergone a number of changes to make it more comfortable, and they have not interfered with its wonderful character. John was flexible with our arrival times and we were able in go in early. The building is beautiful and the location breath taking .I don't know anywhere that allows you to hire the whole of the house, and it was a honour to have this experience of staying here. Many thanks Julie and Andrew bird.

Treowen is an amazing place and absolutely captures the atmosphere of its time. The special character relies on the fact that the place has not been modernised or tarted up. And we completely love it. This is the third time we have filled it with family and friends for a special birthday and we are sad we may be too old to do it again in ten years!
Thank you John and Dick for your welcome and your support. It was nice that you were around the place iinformally during our stay, cutting lawns, clipping hedges and wheeling narrows!

We run a Summer Residency at Treowen Manor in July, bringing a group of young chamber musicians together with experienced tutors for a week. Treowen is the perfect backdrop for this week of music and both students and tutors find the house and its stunning location inspirational and a real escape from their busy lives. John & Dick Wheelock are incredibly helpful and were always quick to respond to our (many & varied!) requests during our stay. We feel very lucky to be able to make Treowen the base for our Wye Valley Chamber Music events and look forward to returning for our winter festival in February 2019.

A return visit to Treowen for us and the first one with children: it never fails to disappoint.

Such an amazing setting for any event, it always impresses. Helped by great weather the children had a ball and there are scuh great spaces for everyone to meet, play and catch up with old friends.

Probably I'll have to come back for my 60th, but might not be able to wait that long

What a weekend! 35 of us descended across the Welsh boarder to Treowen for what can can only described as a PHENOMENAL bank holiday weekend. We were met by John on arrival who kindly took the time to welcome and give us the grand tour and grand it was! Treowen is simply one of the most interesting, magical and giving houses any of us had stayed in and was the perfect spot to celebrate our 30th birthdays. The house is surrounded by the most beautiful grounds that hosted numerous BBQ’s, games of croquet (both provided!)! The bedrooms at Treowen are light and very spacious, most with ensuite, modern bathrooms, the communal areas are brilliant for dinner parties and dancing and if you look hard enough you’ll even stumble across ‘snugs’ and cosy sitting rooms. We will 100% be coming back to Treowen and know that our guests share the same love for it too! Thank you John for what was an unforgettable stay

What an excellent weekend we had!

Treowen has so much atmosphere, is set in beautiful surroundings and has just the right set of facilities to allow a large group to gather together and have fun.

The owners are pleasant, responsive and helpful.

The house is old and as a result may not be up to the standards some desire in terms of every room being on suite etc but in our opinion this is more than made up for by the atmosphere of the house and the fact that it has so many aspects that make you feel at home whilst also in a grand house. These include a brilliant great hall/ dance floor/ games room, a large dinner room, really useful bar/ scullery and an awesome upstairs drawing room - oh and not forgetting the lovely snug lounge with real fire.

Great stay hope to be back again soon.

We held our wedding at Treowen, staying afterwards for a week with friends and family. It was an incredible place to hold a wedding - I lost count of the number of guests who praised the venue - and we loved having the freedom to bring in our own suppliers and make the place feel like our own. Being able to host our family and friends for a few days afterwards was wonderful, curling up with a book in front of the fire, exploring the grounds and making the most of the table tennis table! A beautiful house in a beautiful location, and we'd love to come back.

Our family have stayed here for 10 weeks over 18 years and it is great. We think it is a house designed by someone who only knew castles and churches as large buildings before designing it. The rooms are individually vast, and there are lots of them so 24+ can easily stay for a week without getting under each other's feet. The bedrooms are sparsely furnished (again, because they are so large) and an look old-fashioned, but the beds are comfortable

This was our second trip to Treowen and it really is such a fantastic house. It is grand and beautiful and comfortable and quite unlike anywhere else we have stayed. There is a real sense of history here. The grounds and surrounding countryside are beautiful. It's also a great house for children to play in and for adults to celebrate. The kitchen is great for group catering. Thank you for some very special memories.

Absolutely wonderful weekend away in the most spectacular house. Terrific value to boot. Communication from the host was great throughout. Spacious but cosy, Treowen has everything you could want to entertain a large group, including a fantastic kitchen with commercial appliances. The best holiday let in the country in my humble opinion. Highly recommended.

Every year Treowen becomes the home of the Wye Valley Chamber Music Festival. It is where our musicians live, rehearse and also the stage for two of our concerts. We count ourselves extremely lucky to have such an atmospheric and inspirational backdrop for a week of Chamber Music. The Wheelocks always go above and beyond to cater to our particular needs and we feel truly at home during our time at Treowen. We look forward to returning for some sunshine at our Summer Residency.

Absolutely brilliant mansion house, perfect for large groups of people. I had my 30th, 40th & recently 50th birthday party here. The house is not in perfect order but it is the most stunning house surrounded by beautiful gardens and landscapes.

Treowen is quirky, full of character and on an immense scale, love the huge oak staircase & second spiral staircase along with priest holes! Huge rooms capable of entertaining on a huge scale!

It was an absolute pleasure to stay at Treowen, a beautiful house with real character. The owners have put a lot of work into making sure that this building is comfortable, that the decor is in keeping with the age of the property and the care and effort that has gone into maintaining the grounds is really obvious. The owners have a real gem on their hands.

We've been staying at Treowen every summer for over 10 years, in a group of 30+ people. Originally with babies and toddlers, now with teenagers. We have all come to love the house as our own, the lawns, croquet, banquets, BBQ night, all the country walks, cycling and even swimming in the lake. And we all love the location, close to the Forest of Dean to the east, Raglan and Wales to the west and Monmouth for supplies and river trips. Every year we discover more to explore. We don't ever want to stop enjoying the magic of Treowen.

The Aro gTér Buddhist group have been returning to Treowen for week long retreats for several years. It is a wonderful venue with elegant and comfortable rooms, peaceful and beautiful gardens with plenty of space for children to roam freely and endless rolling hills surrounding the house. There are several huge reception rooms with the possibility of log fires so a homely, cosy atmosphere is easily created on chilly evenings. The owners are most helpful and do everything they can to ensure we have all we need for a successful stay. I would recommend Treowen to anyone wanting a peaceful week with family or friends.

Our extended family has gathered every two years for many years but rarely, if ever, at the same venue. I suspect we may have found one we will come back to. With over 40 turning out this time, it was unanimous that we want to return to Treowen in 2019. A truly memorable setting - beautiful grounds and a house which is unique - and all in very good order. It is not often that one will have the chance to venture into a priest hole, play games in the Long Drawing Room, celebrate in such a dining room, play table tennis in the Banqueting Hall......

We are very grateful to John for being such a great host, making sure we had everything we needed, being there in case and, at the same time, giving us the space we needed. Having the company of Woody, the retired collie was a bonus! From the youngest to the oldest, we had a truly great time - thank you to Treowen!

Treowen is ideal for large groups of people, including children. It has plenty of social spaces so groups can spread out and the grounds offer a great safe play space for younger visitors. The kitchen is well equipped and sociable, the dining room spacious and the Oak Room cosy. The Wheelock family are flexible and helpful and we had a wonderful stay.

This was our second visit to Treowen as we had such a wonderful time last year. And it didn't disappoint! Once again we were welcomed by John, and instantly made to feel at home.
There were 21 of us in total, and everybody had an amazing time: games in the Long Drawing Room; murder mystery in the Dining Room; NERF wars around the house; Zumba in the Banqueting Hall; and barbecues and fun in the garden.
We always come away wishing we could have spent longer there; we'll just have to make to with another return visit next year!

We had a fantastic wedding day at Treowen. We stayed for a few days beforehand with friends and family which everybody loved. Our guests couldn't believe the house, garden and beautiful location. Treowen has such character and we loved the fact we could really make the day our own. John couldn't have been more helpful and accommodating, he really helped us to feel relaxed about our stay and the wedding day. We will have such great memories of log fires, beautiful views, four poster beds, candle lit dinners, sitting in the garden and exploring the house and grounds. We can't recommend Treowen highly enough, if you are considering staying here, try and visit if you can because the photos really can't do it justice.

If you are looking for a review that offers a critical perspective then this unfortunately isn't it.

We hosted a large scale event for family and friends in March 2017 and the core of what made the weekend so special was this property. When you factor everything in (location in country, people able to sleep, look and style, etc.) Treowen really is "unrivalled in the Kingdom" in terms of value.

Our highlights:
- Style - They say pictures don't do a property justice but this place simply can't be expressed without a viewing. This is a huge old manor full of character that captivates the imagination - everything from the grand staircase and living room to the authentic detailing and colourful wallpaper left our guests open-mouthed
- Built for purpose - Many old buildings will be limited in their ability to cope with modern day needs for group holidays or events, but Treowen was 'old house with new needs' - toilets, showers, kitchen provisions all built for heavy use.
- The Wheelocks - John & Dick clearly understand the how people want to use their property when renting. They were there for anything we needed, yet at the same time let us completely get on with doing our own thing for the weekend which really made the house feel like 'ours' for the event.

From a family trip with a twist, to a gathering or celebration of any kind with a larger group, it's hard to see how this house and all its provisions are anything short of perfect. We are currently planning which weekend to return next year.

What an absolute gem!
Thank you for having us!!

From Friday night chorizo stew and rugby, a joint 40th Party Saturday night with band and hog roast, to a 3 course Sunday lunch in the banqueting hall for 42 - what a weekend!!

Having booked before for our wedding 10 years ago we knew the venue would be perfect for a large gathering of friends and family. The house offers everything you need to bring large groups together but also the space for privacy should you need it. You have the flexibility to bring in your own caterers and provide your own drinks with no corkage charge. A very cost efficient way to hold a party to remember.

Over the weekend we had varying numbers staying each night but we easily and comfortably accommodated 35 across the 12 bedrooms with little ones catered for on the campbeds provided. Not that we saw much of the children who had a huge house to explore and fields to run around.

The kitchen offered everything we needed to cater for large numbers and hiring in additional crockery and glasses for the Saturday night cut down on the clearing up! The highlight of course was the industrial dishwasher - it works on a 7 minute cycle!

Sunday night saw just 3 families remaining to enjoy the remainder of the cheese board and the log fire.

We would highly recommend this to anyone looking to bring a large family or group of friends together - seeing 10 people sat around the kitchen table Sunday morning, some of whom had only met the day before, busily peeling carrots and potatoes will stay will me for years to come!

Thank you John, Dick and Treowen for welcoming us.

Kate and Ali.

What can I say , the whole weekend was so wonderful from beginning to end, As soon as we saw Treowen we knew it would work for us. The ambience was perfect for two family's getting to know each other and our friends .
The day of the Wedding was a little rainy but the photos were very good in the house.
Plenty of space and nooks and crannies for people to rest or chat and loved playing Table tennis, and pool.
The fires were all set out with wood and kindling , the bar and kitchen where great places for people to congregate .
No one wanted the weekend to end !

We took Treowen for a long weekend and invited family and friends to stay and to visit. 22 stayed and 36 more came daily. 58 people including 10 children and youngsters sat down to eat and drink over two days. The house was filled with life and we had a wonderful time. Filling the house is the best thing you can do. We went in February and there was snow and high winds. The house is heated well but you also need pullovers for cold corners.

We were trying to find an excuse to go again!

We had a blast at Treowen - it was the perfect venue for our wedding reception. We decked the place out in festive foliage and my wife fulfilled a childhood dream of being able to put up and decorate a 12ft Christmas tree! Everyone was commenting on how unique the place was. The fact that we could get in a day ahead meant we had time to decorate everywhere as we wanted and then have a chilled Friday night with our family and friends ahead of the big day itself. On Sunday too - we had bacon and eggs and everyone sat around catching up. It felt like a proper weekend wedding! Thanks to owners John and Dick for being so helpful and accommodating. We will definitely be coming back to Treowen one day with our mates to celebrate an anniversary!

With 19 Adults and 14 kids, we knew we needed a big house to celebrate New Year together.
Luck was definitely on our side when we found Treowen and we have just returned from the best New Year for years!
The rooms are all enormous so although there were lots of us, we all had plenty of room and space to move around and socialise separately as well as together.
Big roaring fires, a big sociable kitchen table, scullery (temporary bar) and history galore - we're already planning when we can return!
A huge thank you to Dick and John, wonderful hosts who just let us get on with it - but came to the rescue when our disco smoke machine set off the fire alarm on the first night and when we ran out of logs on New Years Day!
We'll definitely be back and thank you for a wonderful stay!

Many of our wedding guests travelled hundreds/thousands of miles from abroad to be with us on our special day and we wanted to provide them with a once in a lifetime experience and showcase british and welsh culture. We couldn't have made a better choice, Treowen House left our guests gaping!
In addition to the building itself, the attention to detail is incredible, all the clocks work, the 2 pianos are tuned and several of the big fireplaces can be used, with firewood provided. The bathroom/toilets are very clean and modern, hot water is hot the moment one opens the taps. Our caterers were very happy with the kitchen.
During the wedding celebrations, having several rooms available was great, as guests would did not wish to dance or eat could go to quieter rooms to chat or play board games by the fire.
In addition, by getting married on a week day and in low season, we got use of the venue for 4 days at a reasonable price. We would recommend Treowen House without hesitation.

Treowen was a wonderful place to celebrate our early autumn wedding - from the moment we first looked around the property John and Dick were so helpful and answered all our questions quickly and without any fuss. Our guests said what a beautiful and special building it was, yet with a real homely feel. The grounds are stunning and well kept, and it was great to have both indoor and outdoor options for the ceremony and party. It's great to be able to have complete flexibility about suppliers and how the day will run, and Treowen offers great value when you consider the accommodation on offer and the fact that there are no silly extras like corkage charges. John even turned up on the day of the ceremony to ensure that all ran smoothly for us. We hope very much to be back at some point to celebrate some other occasion! Thank you very much for helping to make our wedding weekend everything we wanted it to be.

Treowen was a fantastic place for our wedding; John and Dick Wheelock were amazingly helpful and it was useful to have Dick there for the duration of the day. They were professional and invaluable throughout the process.
Treowen is incredible value for money; it is as magnificent, interesting and well-located as venues three times the price!

Anyone would be lucky to wed at Treowen. Thank you Dick and John!

Spent at FANTASTIC weekend at Treowen with friends and family celebrating my 40th birthday. 37 of stayed the full weekend with additional friends coming for the day & evening on Saturday for a party. Children and dogs loved the grounds and exploring the house too. Many of us enjoyed a walk though the woods, which are beautiful. Everyone from youngest (4mths) to oldest (65) had a great time! There's loads to do, we popped into Monmouth a couple of times or if you want a bit of a laze just enjoy the comfort of the house. A truly beautiful place to be.

The title's a bit of a give away isn't it. No bribery involved in writing this review. We've been coming back to Treowen for a week almost every summer for the last twenty years. This year's star addition was the smallest bathroom in the world on the attic floor and we're looking forward to roller skating in the long attic if it's ready by next summer. The knot garden on the back lawn is shaping up nicely and looks quite spectacular when viewed from the air (by drone) or from the north attic windows. The doves posed on the roof of the porch, the kingfisher flashed across the lake and the red kite paid a brief visit. We went canoeing down the Wye and played that game in which you have to pick up an ever shortening cereal packet with your teeth. Back next year.

There were more than twenty of us staying at Treowen for a weekend.

We all had a fabulous time, the countryside is amazing, the house is spectacular - just perfect for a large break: roaring fires, sing-a-longs at the piano, drinks in the garden and dinner in a dining room that could seat us all with room to spare!

Having visited Treowen for a friend's wedding, and been so overwhelmed by how magnificent it was, I immediately booked it for my 40th birthday celebrations. It was more than I could have wished for. Everyone who came, 13 adults and 12 children, were so impressed with not only the house itself, but the set up of the facilities, the location and the friendliness and accommodating nature of the owners. We had such a fantastic time that I immediately booked again for next year. I would highly recommend Treowen to anyone, and am hopefully going to make our visits a yearly tradition.
Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful house.

This is our ninth bi-annual family reunion at this house, Richard and Dick are helpful and friendly and easy to make arrangements with. The house is enormous, we say "built by an architect who had only built castles before" to try to give an idea of the scale of the rooms and the walls etc. It is comfortable and not smart, which helps us all feel at home and not too precious and frightened when the children were younger. The kitchen is huge with a 6-ring powerful gas cooker and plenty of large pans, an enormous kitchen table vast double sink and industrial dishwasher great for doing loads of dishes fast-all set up for catering for large numbers sociably as people drift in to make a cup of tea etc.
There is a wonderful oak-panelled room with glorious log fire for sociable evenings, a vast dining room with two long tables for sociable eating, a games room with ping-pong, a more formal vast Drawing room with Grand piano, ideal for informal concerts, jigsaws in the day time, playing board games etc, a huge staircase, bigger than several small houses, and another spiral staircase for children to chase up and down should it ever rain (well it is Wales) talking of which the location is splendid for mountain biking, walking whether local potters on the very quiet roads, walks for 1-2 hours in local fields and woods, or longer walks in the Black Mountains etc.

30 of us went for a Friday and Saturday night to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. We had a fantastic time and appreciated being able to stay in such a historic house, full of character and charm and surrounded by grounds to explore and walks through woods to enjoy.
The table tennis and pool tables were well used. We ate in the dining hall both nights, by candlelight, and had a roaring fire while we played "Werewolves". We squashed into the Priest Hole (not all at once!). We laughed and sang and danced and partied and ate and drank and generally had a thoroughly good time.
Great place to go, wonderful place for a celebration, highly recommended and we'd love to go again!

We hired Treown for the weekend to celebrate my birthday. Friends and family stayed in the beautiful rooms for the weekend and further guests joined us for a big party on the Saturday. The venue was just fantastic. Our guests danced in the banqueting room, ate hog roast in the dining room, enjoyed a wonderful open fire in the oak room and socialised in the bar. The children loved the little nursery room and could pop in and out of the party. The grounds were beautiful to wander around during the day and for an early Easter egg hunt for the little ones. We really could not have asked for more. A truly fantastic weekend in a beautiful setting.

The dreaded but inevitable 50th birthday turned out to be one of the best times & experiences of my life. Treowen promised a lot for all ages and delivered on that ten fold, the guests were a mix of family & friends with the youngest being just 1 and the eldest 86. We all gathered on a cold, dark and damp Friday eve in late January for a weekend of eating, drinking, exploring, walking, shopping, quizes and general all round entertainment, where all that and more was acheived, and I am pleased to say Treowen was lovely and warm, the rain stayed away and even the sun made an appearance too. The children had a ball playing everywhere with their light sabres, nerf guns and walkie talkies as well as on the complimentary pool and table tennis tables and esp hiding in the priests hole & how refreshing it was to hear their constant laughter and see the line up of muddy wellies instead of seeing their heads burried in an I-pad game. Whether you visit Treowen for a summer wedding (which I've had the pleasure of ) or a longer stay at any time of year you wont be dissapointed. This house is fabulous and large but also cosy with log burning fires and facilities to make your stay a home from home and it gives you lovely memories to treasure for ever - priceless

Treowen is our favourite place for friends and family to get together and as a result we return on a regular basis. Whether for a relaxing family week, a wedding or big occasion, Treowen is a special place. The setting is spectacular with excellent access for walks and mountain biking or just admiring the splendid views or walking around the garden. The kitchen is well equipped for catering for large groups with a catering size oven and dishwasher and plenty of fridge space. We love to be able to seat 30 people in the dining room. The house offers plenty of space for children and adults to relax in front of a roaring fire or entertain in the great hall. A highlight are our musical evenings in the long drawing room and croquet on the lawn. On our return we cannot wait to see what upkeep and additions the family have made, they manage to consistently maintain and improve the accommodation and grounds without losing the special charm of the place. Its too good to tell others about, we don't want it to become too popular! It is a place to switch off and relax away from the stresses of modern life.
The drying wracks are really useful after a long wet walk or muddy bike ride. The new bar area is a great addition. The parking solution is ideal. The toaster seems to be unreliable now. You need more large chopping boards. The additional shower on the top floor is very welcome.
Just a few suggestions: The house was warm overall but the draughts along the floor in the oak room could be improved by filling the gaps from underneath in the cellar, especially in front of the fire where the newspapers will actually move if put on the floor! The sofas are large and comfy if a little tatty in places. You could do with one small round table in the Oak room in a corner for tray of tea etc. It is also difficult to read in the evening unless you are directly under one of the two lamps, the lighting needs improving - maybe a couple of small lamps on a corner table next to the door and left of the fire place.

2015 saw our tenth Christmas at Treowen so we were well acquainted with the house and the area. Our first stay was in 1996 when the senior element consisted of 5 people, two couples and one widower. The extended family was 7 children of those 5 people who between them then had only three young children, the eldest of whom was 3 and the youngest 3 months and our total number was 19. Over the years since 1996 boyfriends and girlfriends of the original 7 children turned up and in time became their husbands and wives and partners. Inevitably the number of grandchildren increased and at Christmas 2015 they totalled 15 and the total extended family consisted of 34 people, 3 of whom were unable to be with us. The older grandchildren are now at university and others are approaching that stage of life.

This probably explains why, if it is ever suggestion that we might not return to Treowen every other Christmas, there is near mutiny from a number of young people who have grown up knowing nothing else. That feeling seems to be shared by the older element too.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and the house exceeded our expectations. The kitchen was perfect for our needs with all the utilities for our large group and Christmas dinner. The beds were comfortable, and it was great to make fires in the dinning room and sitting room. All in all we were comfortable and happy.

We have a small suggestion, you might benefit from updating the photos on your website. The house was much more comfortable and better equipped than we expected, we felt the photos didn't do it justice.

Thank you for having us.

Treowen was a perfect location for our 1920s murder mystery weekend. The property is beautifully furnished in a period style, with antique furniture everywhere, and all the rooms are elegant and spacious. The kitchen is well-equipped and we were impressed by how warm the house was for a chilly weekend in November.

We used Treowen for a family get together, 35 of us in all spanning 3 generations. the house was cosy, we could all sit down to a meal together. I really enjoyed having the heated trolly to keep all the food warm and the industrial dish washer was a bonus with all those plates to wash. The cooker did take a bit of getting used to but we got there in the end. The beds were comfortable. I had told everyone to bring plenty of warm clothes but they were not needed as the house was so warm and cosy all weekend. The children enjoyed playing in the grounds, spending time in the games room and they had an exciting time looking for and climbing into the priest hole. There was also plenty to do in the surrounding area. All in all a really good location for us to enjoy each others company.

I hired Treowen for my 60th birthday party with 50 guests. We had held my daughters wedding here 7 years ago so were familiar with the house and grounds. However we were still blown away with the wonderful setting of beautiful gardens and countryside. The house itself offers perfect amenities for a party we had a lovely afternoon tea in the upstairs sitting room and a splendid dinner in the big main room downstairs with fabulous catering provided by Cafe Ascari (details provided on the Treowen website) and their brilliant staff. After fireworks outside there was music and dancing into the wee small hours while some made use of the downstairs sitting room and had a blazing log fire. The guests were all very comfortable in their rooms and there was plenty of space for the youngsters to sleep on camp beds that were provided. The large well equipped kitchen had plenty of use in preparing dinner for those arriving the night before the party and breakfast for people on Sunday. Treowen has an inspiring sense of history and offers something for everyone. I feel very privileged to have been able to hold my celebration there.

Wow! What can I say, but what an incredible house. We were a large group of 28 and needed somewhere to accommodate all of us for a long weekend. The photo's of the house do not do it justice, it is huge. The group was a mix of all backgrounds, but without fault every single one could not believe we were staying in such an incredible and historic building. The facilities were excellent (games room, dining room, kitchen, bar area and more lounges, drawing rooms etc than you could need). The house really made the weekend. The location is great and there are loads of activities nearby Monmouth area to keep everyone entertained (Hart clay pigeon shooting and Bigwell fishery were first class). John and Dick Wheelock were a joy to deal with and so accommodating and friendly. If I have the opportunity to return for any reason or need to recommend a unique and special house for anything similar then Treowen House will be top of my list.

All in all, if you are considering Treowen House then just book it. It really is that good.

Thanks to John and Dick,

Mike and the rest of the Purdy stag rabble.

Treowen is a home away from home.
It is not a pristine, museum quality show home which means that all the family can relax and enjoy this magnificent country house.
The kids waged Nerf gun battles on the top floors and the adults chilled out in front of a roaring fire at the opposite corner of the house. With lots to do both inside the house (table tennis, pool table and tons of space) and near by (cycling, walking, Wye Valley, Symonds Yat and the Forest of Dean) three generations were easy to keep amused.
Highly recommended

Treowen is a fabulous venue for a Summer Wedding. We loved every minute of our stay. This beautiful old house has a magical atmosphere about it that charmed everyone that came to celebrate with us. The views of the Monmouthshire countryside are spectacular from the garden and we all sat outside late into the evening enjoying both the beautifully planted gardens and the fields beyond.

Both Richard and John Wheelock met us before the Wedding to help us plan the day and were so friendly and helpful.

I have to say that when the time came to leave Treowen we were more than a little sad to go and hope that we will come back one day for a weekend stay.

We stayed at Treowen for a 120th birthday weekend (two 60s in the same week) and had an even better time than we had expected. The house was well equipped and clean and utterly unique. It was a house that would have given us a great time whatever the weather. The weather happened to be good enough to play croquet in front of the house (watched by the sheep) and go for walks. But it would have worked equally well if really hot (you could imagine lying in the sun or lazing in the shade) or rainy (there was a TV, a table tennis and pool table). It was perfect. We are going to start saving up to go again right away.

Thanks to John and Dick Wheelock for giving us the perfect location for a 40th birthday celebration with old University friends. The house is magnificent, location simply stunning, and facilities and catering provisions ideal. We were a party of 30 with plenty of under-10s, who loved exploring the house, flying kites on the hill side, playing in the gardens, and singing by the fireside. We hope to return, as this was a weekend that is impossible to improve. Thank you immensely!

Treowen has been the home of the Wye Valley Chamber Music festival since 2008 and there is a reason we keep coming back. This amazing building is perfect for a winter retreat, with roaring log fires and plenty of space for everyone (and plenty of bathrooms!) The house can also easily cope with larger events, not just in terms of logistics but also giving them a special atmosphere. The location away from the town is wonderful and the surrounding countryside provides real inspiration for the musicians. From a more practical point of view, there is easy access to Monmouth and the owners couldn't have been more helpful, both in the run up to and during our stay. We look forward to basing our summer events there as well in the future!

Visited for the seventh? eighth? time in March 2015. Fiftieth birthday for friends and family and Treowen remains an ideal location. Why go anywhere else? House is atmospheric; kids and adults love it; fishing, walking, games, music, laughter, warmth, food - it has the lot. Mr Wheelock is an excellent owner - friendly, reliable and so proud of the house. So he should be. We will be back without doubt.

We (9 families) have been going to Treowen for a number of years and it is a very special house, it has been improved a lot over the years with better heating and bathroom facilities. It is an historic house with lots of interesting features, lovely log fires and games room, however we find the kitchen is the most used room! Everyone congregates there for food, chats, reading papers.Surrounded by beautiful countryside and near enough to Monmouth for shops and pubs etc.
Thoroughly recommend.

We cannot recommend Treowen enough, it's a truly amazing place. We have been staying there for 20 years, it never loses its appeal. We recently returned after an 8 year absence, returning friends all said we can't wait anther 8 years and those visiting for the first time were enthralled.

If it's a a break with friends, including or not including kids, go for it, you will not regret it. It's fixtures and fittings are not luxury, they are practical, robust for a country house set in acres of land. Whether it's wind, rain or shine there is always something to do.
