This was our second visit this summer, and it’s hard to imagine anywhere that could top it. The lodge was cozy, spotless, and so thoughtfully prepared with lovely welcome gifts. Nick even dropped by with some freshly picked apples, which was such a kind touch.
What makes this place so special is the peace and privacy — you’re surrounded by amazing views and can slip straight into the hot tub to take them all in. We also loved the secure garden, which was perfect for our dog, and the well-equipped kitchen made everything so easy. The BBQ area is a great, which we enjoyed making use of and within ten minutes drive you’ve got local takeaways if you don’t feel like cooking.
The woods are beautiful for walking, and I’d only say it would be helpful to have a bit more information about other more local walks and footpaths. We didn’t want to venture that far from Thurstonfield.
Checking in and out couldn’t have been easier, and everything about the stay felt relaxed and welcoming. The Tranquil Otter really lives up to its name — we can’t wait to return again.

Our 3-night stay in the Gadwall Lodge was an almost perfect, relaxing getaway! The lodge was roomy, well laid out, cleaned to a very high standard, and equipped with everything you'd need for a long weekend away.

There was a lovely log burner in the living area (which we didn't use) but there is also thermostat controlled central heating which kept the cabin really cozy as the temperature dropped in the evening. The TV came with lots of cable channels and was easy to use.
We loved the hot-tub on the outside decking area and spent plenty of time soaking in it, taking in the lovely views of the lake, nature, and the ducks (who became our friends once they knew we had duck food!).

The accommodation is located in a lovely village and is only a 10/15 minute drive away from several nice restaurants, a couple of pubs, and a range of takeaways! We drove out on one of the days to see Hadrians Wall, which ended up in a nice trail walk. There were also some great walks closer by, including a lovely forest pathway around the lake to the rear of the lodge.

All in all, we loved our stay and glad that we chose to stay at the Tranquil Otter over some of the other locations we looked at. It really is a unique location and we will definitely stay there again in the future!

Excellent few days spent in the Gadwall. The Lodge has every amenity you would expect and more. Comfortable beds, soft , fluffy towels, & lots of little homely touches. The kitchen is very well equipped and spotlessly clean. We relaxed in the Hot tub, took the boat out, walked round the Lough many times and even found time to feed the ducks. We left just the once to have a pub lunch, & can recommend The Greyhound, Burgh by Sands, great food and friendly staff. Loved our stay & already planning a return!

This was our second stay this year at Tranquil Otter and every bit as good as our first one.
Lovely setting on the lake with our own little rowing boat to explore the lake.
Only little suggestion would be to cut some of the branches away from the trees around the front decking as they block most of the sun from the area which was a bit disappointing given the otherwise superb location.
Would have no hesitation to recommend to friends and also will return.

We absolutely loved our stay at the Tranquil Otter. The lodge was a great size, comfortable and well stocked. The bed was huge and really comfortable, the kitchen had everything you could need for a weekend away and the lounge was comfortable with views of the lake. The hot was huge and we made time to take a dip twice a day, looking out over the water. Would highly recommend this lovely place for some downtime.

There are plenty of things to do nearby. We've previous visited the Bird of Prey centre just along the road which was an amazing experience. It's about a 30 minute drive to the Gretna retail outlet and the Annandale distillery too. The Tranquil Otter provide lots of really useful information around walks, restaurants and things to do in the area.

My second stay at the Tranquil Otter to celebrate our second year anniversary. The first was in Chiffchaff and this time we stayed in Gadwall. Gadwall, just like Chiffchaff, was wonderful. We were gifted Prosecco and chocolates which was a lovely gesture. It is just pure bliss at Tranquil Otter and it never disappoints. The weather was gorgeous so we spent most of our time relaxing outside, saying hi to the swan and ducks that pass by and playing cards. We didn’t want to leave! We always recommend Tranquil Otter to all our family and friends.

This was our first stay at the Tranquil Lodge and it certainly won’t be our last! We needed a little break away from home and it was everything we could’ve asked for and more. The lodge is beautiful and the views were second to none. It was so peaceful and exactly what we needed. Our little dog Gracie loved watching the birds all day, and playing with the toy the otter team were so kind to leave for her. We will be regular visitors and recommend it to everyone! Thank you so much ❤️

We have been several times and we both enjoyed the peace and quiet. Above all the forest around the lake is like an 'adventure playground' for a ver happy springer spaniel. An hosepipe to help wash him down would be an asset. We were comfy, warm and had a good relax. The produce from the local butcher in Great Orton 'Mulholands' is outstanding and well worth a visit to stock up.

Clean, great size, all amenities provided.

Exactly what you need for a relaxing break. One of our best short breaks in the UK thanks to the ease of the whole process.

Highly recommended by us both and many thanks for taking a bit of the stress of life away - if only for a week! :)

Cant fault a thing - well maybe……..should have stayed longer!!!

Thanks to the Tranquil Otter team for making a week away easy, welcoming and seamless to organise!!

Book now as I even saw one customer has stayed here 84 times! Enough said, it was simply outstanding!!

THANKYOU

Visit number 84 ….. says it all really! We have been visiting the Tranquil Otter regularly over the past 19 years and we just LOVE it ❤️ The peace and tranquility is just what we need as I am the main Carer for my 88 year old father, so these short breaks allow us to relax and just ‘be’.

We had a great stay at Gadwall which was very peaceful. We enjoyed the hot tub on the decking. There was wildlife all around us and the lake just a few metres away. It was ideal too, for our dog who loved the walks around the cabin. We’ll be booking our return visit!

Second visit to the Tanquil Otter lodges. Even better on this visit as we were blessed with some good weather. Great to sit out on the decking, BBQ and a glass of wine. Home comforts in the lodge were first class. Hot tub clean and well cared for. The service from booking, arrival and departure was excellent . The northern lakes area is wonderful but virtually all the countryside is fenced off and usually with animals. For a dog owner the beautiful walk around the lake is perfect and that facility clinches it for us. I think our 4 yr. old springer enjoyed the freedom and the stay as much as we did. Will be returning. Thank you.

We have stayed at the Tranquil Otter over 70 times in the past 19 years. We first came for my Partner’s 40th birthday, and celebrated her 59th here last month. On this occasion, we were celebrating my birthday! We have come here to get away following the death of parents, when the world just gets too much, with friends and to celebrate. Whatever your reason for visiting the Tranquil Otter, you will find peace and tranquility. Gadwall lodge is a spacious one bedroom lodge, which has recently had a makeover. So much thought has gone into every detail and everything you could wish for is to hand. Waking up to the amazing views over the Lough is THE best start to a day. The hot tub is the cherry on the cake, and is a perfect end to a day. Our retired greyhound loves the freedom of being able to wander out onto the decking, as we have no secure outside space at home. We really cannot praise this little piece of paradise enough, but don’t just take our word for it!
