Great property, excellent location, great pubs (with amazing food) and so much to do in the surrounding area. It's a perfect spot for a break and The Merchant House is an excellent house to rent for a group.

Since first coming to Charlbury six years ago, parking is much more challenging so would suggest wherever possible just bringing one car if you can.

The house was beautifully presented, and the location great, the village was lovely and within walking distance to local pubs and shops. We enjoyed a special birthday celebration and would love to return at some point.

The Merchant house is a beautiful house for a family or group of friends to spend a few days visiting the Cotswolds! It is perfectly located in the centre of Charlbury, a couple of doors down from the Bull, one of the best pubs in the region! Also, it is super easy to get anywhere from the Merchant House - it's just between 15 and 30 minutes driving from Blenheim Palace, Burford, Kingham, Bourton-on-the-Water, the Slaughters, or Stow-on-the-Wold, and while driving to these places, you are sure to be presented with some of the most incredible countryside views of the hills and valleys of the Cotswolds!

Then the house itself is as charming as you can get! The bottom floor is perfect for having the family together in the evenings, with its 2 living areas and large dining table, the fireplace, and a very spacious kitchen with an additional dining area overlooking the beautifully manicured back yard. In Summer evenings, the Backyard looks like a charm (been there in Winter, so I couldn't make the most of the backyard, but it looked absolutely lovely), and then the 6 themed rooms across the top 2 floors, two of them with ensuite bathrooms, and another extra bathroom in each floor (all the bathrooms are fully renovated, and in perfect conditions), are perfect for a cozy and memorable stay. I found it all so perfectly decorated, with a very refined taste, but still feeling very home-like and with the whole charm of the region. As I've been there in the Winter, I can tell the heat always worked perfectly.

As for the hosts, they were the most kind and gave us the best recommendations of what to do and visit in the area! Would definitely go back!

We had a wonderful time staying in Merchant House in Charlbury
It was my sons 27th birthday and it was a perfect setting
The Bull pub next door was lovely and they really looked after my family celebrating Ollies bday.
Merchant House is so beautiful, I am quite difficult to please and I was very happy.

We absolutely loved our stay at Merchant House in October. The house and garden are absolutely stunning, each room is tastefully decorated with gorgeous fabrics, lighting and accessories. Everything you could possibly need is provided and the house felt so cosy, it really was the perfect place to spend time with family and relax.

I absolutely love this property. I have recommended it several times to friends looking for somewhere to stay in the Cotswolds. The house has been beautifully interior designed and it feels warm, cosy and welcoming. It has such a luxurious feel, and yet still feels homely.

The bedrooms are all comfortable and no one in my group wanted to leave, We could easily have stayed here for another week! Two nights we ate out, but then we were happy to stay in, by cosy by the fire and work on the puzzles and games, supplied in the house, and eat our deli foods we bought from the village shop and elsewhere on our Cotswold explorations.

The garden is beautiful and there is plenty of outdoor space to sit quietly and read, whilst everyone else is outdoor dining. I think there is something for everyone here, with cosy nooks and comfortable sofas.

I have already booked to stay here again in 2026!

We had the most incredible long weekend at Merchant House, every aspect of our stay exceeded expectations. The house is even more beautiful in person, and we’re already dreaming about our next visit.

Jo was an outstanding host from start to finish. She provided thoughtful touches like welcome goodies and gave us recommendations for private chefs, all while being super responsive and easy to communicate with.

The bedrooms were all generously sized and gorgeously decorated, the garden was immaculate and a joy to spend time in, and the interiors throughout the house were simply stunning. As a group, we all left feeling totally inspired to redecorate our homes in true Merchant House style!

The Merchant house was more than we could have imagined or hoped for in a Cotswolds home. We recently stayed at the house for 10 days on a multi- generational holiday and can report that each generation absolutely adores the house! All generations enjoyed the magnificent backyard/garden- my children especially.

The interiors are simply spectacular. Allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in The Cotswolds state of mind. The house is filled with thoughtfully curated touches and design accents lending to a cosy familiar feel. The house features a large enough space as not to be on top of one another, yet the warmth of a family home : the ideal blend for traveling with extended family.

The town of Charlbury is everything an American can imagine in a quintessentially English countryside village. Having The Bull and The Bell in town is also a game changer. The people of Charlbury are equally as lovely - remarkably friendly.

Jo was a fantastic host. She was so helpful during our booking process and whilst we were there. Quick to respond with any questions and provided exceptional ideas for activities for us to enjoy with our children. Jo has thoroughly and thoughtfully created a space where memories are made.

We plan on making our trip to the Merchant House an annual tradition.

We’ve just returned from a family get together to celebrate an 85th birthday at Merchant House. The house was in a great location and was very well equipped throughout.
The fine weather enabled us to enjoy the beautiful landscaped garden for BBQS and games.
Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the property to friends and family.

Merchant House with its luxurious, tasteful and comfortable interior provided the perfect location for our short break. From the well stocked kitchen to the beautiful bedrooms with their stunning bathrooms, we were extremely well catered for. We were lucky to have glorious sunny weather for the whole of our stay, meaning we were able to take advantage of the pretty and secluded rear garden with its comfortable outdoor furniture.
Our host was helpful and communicative from the outset.
For those of us who enjoy a chilled glass of white wine, maybe the addition of a wine cooler to free up space in the fridge would be a useful addition.

The house is simply beautiful. It is so well equipped and caters for every need. The garden is stunning. Charlbury is a gorgeous village with a surprising amount of facilities including a well equipped playground, sports facilities and numerous amazing eateries. Really recommended.

We visited Merchant House for the second year, as we had such a nice time last year we wanted to return. It was great to come back a second time, the house was as spacious and gorgeous as we remembered. As three families, it is great to have somewhere with enough indoor space when staying in the winter months, and still have some walkable things on your doorstep - there are such lovely pubs nearby and a local shop. All in such a lovely setting, it felt like home from home and gave us all the relaxing break we needed.
