Pet-friendly holiday home in the quiet hamlet of Drumguish

Perfect for active couples and families, Aonach is a comfortable, well-equipped cottage situated in the quiet hamlet of Drumguish, on the edge of Cairngorm’s wilderness. Only 3 miles from Kingussie, Aonach is easy to reach by bike along the Speyside Way off-road route. Access is also easy by car, and we have an EV charger at the house. From the doorstep you can walk and cycle for miles with only the sound of birdsong to accompany you, and the wide spectacular landscapes of the Cairngorm mountains opening up before you. We’ve installed a large scale OS map of the area on the dining room wall with Aonach at its centre so you can plan all your adventures over a cup of tea!

Peaceful location, many walks nearby

Loved watching the birds at the feeder , garden also visited by red squirrels, pheasants, rabbits etc
Location was peaceful and quiet , many walking trails near the house. Kingussie only 10 min drive for provisions .
The interior was a bit dated , found the beds extremely uncomfortable, mattresses were very hard.
Quite a demanding list of house rules !

Thank you for taking the time to let us know what you thought about your stay at Aonach. We’re delighted that you enjoyed the location and the wildlife – these are the two things that we think make Aonach such a special place to visit. With regards to the beds, I’m sure that you will agree that mattress firmness is very much a matter of personal taste – to our knowledge, you are the first guest to have found the beds uncomfortable! We feel that the interior is accurately photographed and described on our website, to help our guests decide whether Aonach is an appropriate holiday property that meets their tastes. We are working through a programme of improvements to Aonach, including the new bathroom, which was completed in 2023, along with new bed frames, and flooring in the kitchen and utility room. We prefer to make changes to things when they are necessary, rather than following transient interior design trends, as we feel that this approach sits better with our respect for sustainability and the environment. Our house rules are there to ensure that the house and its surroundings are respected so that future guests can enjoy their stay. Finally, we noticed that you rated us ‘3’ for cleanliness. Our cleaners are proud of their work, and we have never had any other complaints about cleanliness. Please feel free to message us directly with further information/photos so that we can take the matter up with our cleaners.

Despite somewhat patchy Scottish weather, the family had a great time at WildStuff Scotland - everything we needed was there and the location is quiet and serene. Red squirrels in the back garden and abundant bird life; walks on our doorstep and more adventures a short drive away. Thanks!

Thanks to Dewi for ensuring Aonach was warm and welcoming when we arrived. Great to have facilities for storing and maintaining our bikes as part of our stay. Thanks for filling the bird and squirrel feeders - good entertainment for us and our dog!
Could do with a bit more crockery eg. only 5 small plates. Especially as house is set up for 5, so would need to do more frequent washing up.... on holiday.

Thank you for your helpful review - we're glad you enjoyed your stay and that the birds and squirrels came to visit! We've noted your comment regarding crockery - there are normally 6 small plates as well as 6 large plates, 6 cereal bowls, and 6 pasta bowls. Unfortunately one must have been broken and not reported to us.

Super destination and property

Our 2nd time this year at Aanoch and another great stay. It’s clear that Dewi and Lynne really care about their guest’s experience and go the extra mile to make you feel welcome. The setting is glorious, the cottage comfortable, clean & very well equipped. Perfect peaceful biking retreat.

Aonach is a wonderful place to stay. It was really comfortable, beautifully clean, spacious and well-equipped, and certainly excellent value for money. The location was perfect for us - plenty of activities nearby to keep two teenage boys happy, with fabulous walking and spectacular scenery for us all. The shops and restaurants/takeaways in nearby Kingussie and Newtonmore were good and allowed us to shop locally, and nearby Loch Insh Water Sports Centre served lovely meals and cakes.

Overall we would highly recommend Aonach as a great base for a holiday!

We loved staying at Aonach so much 2 years ago, that we came back this year. With the newly fitted bathroom the property is even more comfortable than before and is the perfect location for a relaxing break amongst stunning scenery and wildlife. It is well equipped and the hosts are contactable to help out with questions or issues. We plan to visit again soon.

Second time we have stayed and did not disappoint. Aonach is set in a fantastic location for wildlife and scenery. Able to walk from the door in any direction and step into the wilderness. Garden was visited by over twenty species of birds and there was the daily visits from the local red squirrels. Will look forward to our next stay, the cottage is clean, comfortable and well equipped and a perfect place to stay.
