Quoylee is a cosy 3-bedroom bungalow, set in a quiet, rural area surrounded by panoramic countryside views.

It’s the little things that need correcting

The location is just superb. I have been visiting Orkney for 35 years for business and pleasure, sometimes twice a year, and this has to be amongst the best locations.

I think the directions need to be improved and the wi fi password given in the 'welcome' email is incorrect. There is a card in the lounge with the correct details which I found after waiting a lot of time. See below for my comments on the quite useless wi fi.

The kitchen/diner is well stocked with crockery, glassware, pots, pans and utensils. Indeed, the best stocked I have ever stayed at. Usually I end up buying a couple of things but not this time so we’ll done Quoylee.

However, it’s the little things that could easily be addressed such as hooks on the back of bathroom and bedroom doors. There is also a need for a soap dish in the en suite shower. These might seem like minor criticisms (which they are) but it’s as if the owners had never stayed there themselves.

Back to the positive. The lounge is large with superb views and a decent size TV. The utility room is bigger than some bedrooms I have stayed in with a very good washing machine and an excellent dryer. The instructions for all the appliances in the house are in a folder in the utility room, and the owners should point you in that direction rather than you have to hunt around. As I said, it’s the little things.

The price of staying in Orkney has got very expensive and Quoylee is certainly not cheap. Having to pay the full amount over a year in advance, and by bank transfer, was a new one on me and might put people off. Places I have stayed at in the past have only taken a deposit and the remainder a few weeks before the stay, allowing the customer to save. I have also paid by credit card in the past as this is much safer for the customer.

The three is us had an excellent 2 week stay but the owners should have ensured we were informed that major BT works restricted access on some days and for the entire stay a third of the entrance to the driveway was an un filled trench blocked with traffic cones. Although the owners could do nothing to prevent it, we should have been warned and it did rather ruin the ambience for a couple of days, particularly when the workmen blocked the driveway with a digger.

Hopefully renters will benefit from better broadband in the future as it was dire. Simply not good enough to stream Netflix, Disney etc. A 2mb download in this day and age is unacceptable especially when there is a strong EE 4G signal giving around a 30mb speed. I was able to use the latter to work and video conference.

The owners could easily correct these things and, for me, should have given the price being charged. When we arrived the grass was overgrown but I understand that weather can interfere with cutting. However, we should have been informed that it was being cut while we were there, rather than return home to find a man with a van working in the garden. We had a 5 year old with us and had to wait until the chap was finished before letting him go out to play.

I did not find the customer service to be of the highest order and a promised call back to me never happened.

Customers should not have to ring up to complain the bins are full and what the process is for emptying them.

All these little things (although the wi fi is a major issue) add up and took the edge off our stay. A great pity.

Stunning

A perfect location with widespread loch views and comfortable furniture. Quiet, but only a short distance from Stromness. Everything immaculate and new (probably the only holiday accommodation I have ever been to where the kitchen knives are actually sharp!). A perfectly located outside patio and bench for G&Ts if the Orkney wind allows. We hope to return.
