Formerly a gatehouse to a Tuscan country estate - this charming villa offers spacious, bright interiors furnished to a good standard. Ideally situated within walking distance of a village and only 10 Km from the centre of Lucca. The owner can arrange for bicycle hire so you can cycle along the Serchio river in to the heart of the walled city. Large garden and fenced pool which can be heated. From the north-facing windows, the views span over miles of forested countryside, whilst from those facing south the views look across olive groves to the Pizzorne Mountains or down the valley where the Serchio River curls towards the sea. Ideal for those who want a comfortable base to explore Northern Tuscany at any time of year. Short stays available. Tennis courts within walking distance

A beautiful property and stunning pool but no outside space directly connected to the house

La Portiniera is a beautiful home, furnished to a great standard with lots of space, and all the comforts needed for a great family holiday. The pool is fabulous and kept very clean and tidy - the garden has lots of seats and an outside barbecue which is fabulous. The house is in a great location too, very close to Pisa airport and only 20 minutes from Lucca. It is a 15 minute walk to the nearest shop and ice cream parlour and local restaurants are not too far.

The only downside is that there is no outside space directly attached to the house. The owners live downstairs (and are really friendly and helpful) but their private garden separates La Portiniera from the guests' garden and the swimming pool. You walk 30 metres up a private road to reach the garden and pool. Although there is plenty of outside eating space by the pool, you need to carry food, utensils etc from the house, up the road and down a steep flight of steps to reach the outside table. It also means in the evenings, once young children are in bed, there is nowhere to sit outside within ear shot of the children.

The house and pool were fabulous and at the standard we know we'll always get from Bridgewater - it was excellent. But we were disappointed with the location of the pool and garden.
