A large Victorian town house just a short walk from York city centre. Great for family holidays & sightseeing trips to beautiful York.

Handy Location, good value but small issues stop property reaching full potential.

We stayed in 7 St John's Crescent during April 2025 to celebrate a special family birthday in York. The booking process and entry to the property was straightforward. The property has lovely period features and is well proportioned (we had four people staying but it could easily accommodate six, as advertised) The property is really well located, near to Monk Bar, with a view of York Minster at the end of the street. Overall I would recommend the property (and we would use it again if we were to visit York), however there were a few minor issues: The property has an Esse range cooker (like an aga) and when we arrived the pilot light was out (i.e. it wouldn't heat up) - the instructions provided didn't cover that problem; I tried phoning the "emergency" phone number (it was after office hours) however it went straight to voicemail and we didn't ever get a call back. I eventually managed to get instructions on the internet and got the pilot light lit and was able to cook the planned birthday dinner, however it was an unnecessarily stressful start to the weekend. The property had been cleaned, however many surfaces hadn't been dusted (a family member put his arm on the mantle piece in the dining room and his sleeve was covered with a layer of dust), there were a few cobwebs in the top corners of most rooms. Unfortunately, the property has clothes moths in it, mostly seen upstairs, the problem was particularly bad in the attic room and one oven tin was so greasy that even after I'd cleaned it we lined it with foil. When we arrived, the bin in the front garden was full to overflowing, leaving us wondering where we would leave our rubbish, it was emptied on the Sunday during our stay.
These small issues didn't spoil our stay, but they do stop a property with a lot of potential getting a better rating from me. If the owner/manager of the property could sort these issues the property could be five-star...

Dear Heather, many thanks for your feedback. We are very glad to hear you had a nice stay despite some issues you found at the property. I do apologise about these, and we will do our best to resolve them as soon as possible. I am sorry to hear your call was not returned, I can see that we did not receive your voicemail so I am not sure what happened there. There should be some instructions on how to operate the cooker left on the kitchen counter, we will make sure they are definitely there for the next guests. We will make sure to pass on your comments about cleanliness to the cleaning company, and I apologise on their behalf that the property’s cleanliness was not up to scratch. Thank you for letting us know about the moths, I can confirm we have arranged for pest control to attend and resolve the issue as soon as possible. We do not manage the rubbish collection, as this is collected weekly by the council, but I believe there are some details about this in the Welcome Folder at the property. Kind regards Rosie

Lovely stay

Great location. I would say best cleaning under the chairs and settee in the living area. Make more of the garden some colour in it would be nice.

Excellent location close to the city. Good size rooms and beds comfortable. Showers good. Luckily one of party knew how to use the range. The bedrooms very warm and some windows didn’t open. Apart from this the stay was very good. Close to castle Howard had a fab day visiting the Xmas event.

Enjoyed this property, spacious for 4 adults, v close to centre, easy level walk, close to convenience stores and parking was easy. Two bathrooms with showers as well as a bath - main bathroom shower powerful and hot water plentiful, no complaints!

Minor inconveniences - no properly working freezer, double bed mattress needs replacing (we sloped into the middle a bit).

Didn’t use cooker, used fridge, wash machine, dryer, kettle - really appreciated these devices!

Patio garden was nice tho rain prevented us sitting out

Didn’t try TV etc but wifi was good

Would stay again

This house is in a fantastic location. When you step out the door, the Minster's towers are right before you. It is a fine house and served us well.
The photographs in the website are cleverly taken and the sitting room is better in them - brighter, larger and more magnificent - than the real thing. The real thing is perfectly ok,.
The company chooses not to offer the opportunity to recycle. This is frustrating.
The attic room is good fun. Our teenage children enjoyed staying up there.
The kitchen is full of useful things.
The conservatory is a nice place to sit, though some of the furniture is a wee bit broken.
We liked it.

A great period house in a quiet street. York centre is a 5 min walk away so this is a great base to explore the city.

The house was warm welcoming with a lovely kitchen.

The only issues we had were that the stairs are remarkably steep, which seems to be a bit of an English thing. And we discovered one of the curtains in the lounge room was falling off its rail, which I would imagine they would have fixed by now, as I did let them know. The house is beautiful, and truly within walking distance from the centre of York for sightseeing purposes. Having a bathroom on the second and third floor’s was very handy although for my elderly mother to have to get up to the first floor, every time she needed the toilet was a bit of a pain.

Great location a few minutes walk from the city centre. Managed to get to grips with the Esse by reading & following instructions carefully. Could be tricky if you can't bend. It was lovely to have table & chairs outside for breakfast & dinner when weather allowed. May have been useful if leaves had been brushed up before our arrival as they blew into the house and stuck to our shoes. A small coffee table or tables in the lounge would be useful. Having parking space was a huge bonus.

We couldn't have asked for more. The property is perfectly situated just outside the city walls within a few minutes walk of all of York's main attractions. The parking permit was a huge bonus. Everything one could possibly want was available in the property: clean, attractively decorated, well maintained and with a charming courtyard garden. Perfect.

Lovely house a short walk from York Minster but on a quiet residential street with no through traffic. Weather was a bit cold when we were there but all of the house was lovely and warm. Plenty of hot water as well. We didn’t cook so never used the aga but there was lots of kitchen equipment if we had wanted to. The coffee machine is a Nespresso. The small conservatory was our favourite place to sit - comfortable and bright. Stays York were efficient and pleasant and called the day before our arrival to see if we needed anything. Would stay again at St John’s Crescent and would book with Stays York in the future.

The house is well located for a city break, 5mins zigzagging through some back lanes and you’re within the inner city walls via monk gate. Procedures are swift and self explanatory. The property itself has seen many generations of guests which is mainly felt in the bed and reception rooms. Kitchen and bath are best for cleanliness. The cleaners know their job. There is a black throw on the double bed that might need to be exchanged or properly cleaned as it does not smell good anymore. Upon arrival the house was cold which was not very welcoming, it needed a whole evening to get warmer and being a frosty night the atmosphere didn’t feel nice. Maybe someone should check on day of arrival if the default 10C the heating is set on are enough.

Thanks for the review and great to hear you enjoyed your time in York. Sorry to hear you found the property a little chilly on arrival. We do set the heating to a comfortable temperature before guests arrive so not sure what's happened there. We'll certainly have all the settings double checked
