Glen hill is a large, striking Victorian property with a beautiful, well established, two acre garden. It is accessed via a private road, shares a boundary with the popular Walmer Castle Gardens and has views of the Castle and the sea beyond. There is private parking for at least seven cars and easy access (including by foot) to Walmer train station, the beach, the downs and local pubs and shops. The property comprises three connected units - main house, annex and studio apartment - sleeping up to 18 guests (19, on request). Traditionally furnished, with books and games for guests to enjoy, in summer there is an old grass tennis court (rackets and balls are not provided), a BBQ, croquet set and outdoor seating. The gardeners visit each week to maintain the gardens. Dogs are welcome.

The main house was built in the mid 1800s and has a large, well equipped modern kitchen with two range cookers and a breakfast table. Beyond the kitchen is a large utility room with washing machine, dryer and Dutch airer, a downstairs loo and an original walk-in larder. Completing the ground floor is an elegant drawing room and a grand wood panelled dining room, both with high ceilings, original fireplaces and plenty of seating. These rooms have glass doors leading onto an original (unheated) Victorian encaustic tiled veranda with views over the garden. There is an open fire in the drawing room and wood/coal is provided. A grand wooden staircase leads up to four generous bedrooms.

The annex: added to the house in the late 1800s, the annex is less grand but has high ceilings, original Crittall windows and original fireplaces. It has bright open plan living space with a dining table and two sofas, a modest old-fashioned kitchen and a downstairs loo. It has a separate ground floor entrance and can also be accessed from the main house. A staircase leads to three bedrooms.

The flat: the maids' quarters to the main house were recently converted into a modern first floor studio flat with garden and castle views, a bedroom area with separate shower room, a seating area, dining area and kitchenette. It has a separate ground floor entrance with downstairs loo and can also be accessed from the main house via back stairs leading from the utility room.

We had a wonderful Christmas week at Glen Hill. We felt that it was a home, not a holiday rental. It’s been lived in and feels like a a real family home which we loved. Consequently it’s not “hi spec” in terms of bathrooms and decor but that did not bother us at all. We were 16 in all, 8 adults and 8 children agreed 5-13. Abundance of space for everyone. The kids loved the rambling nature of the house, great for hide and seek! Adults loved the huge and well equipped kitchen and the open fire lounge and huge dining room. The grounds kept the kids busy exploring and playing for hours safely. Bedrooms were comfy and bathrooms fine. Water pressure quite low. Views from master bedroom over Walmer Castle to the sea a real morning treat. Location excellent, a short stroll to the seafront then 20mins walk to Deal. Literally in Walmer Castke’s doorstep. Short drive to pretty St Margaret’s at Cliff. All in all a great week and we would return.

The place was perfect for a weekend getaway with lots of friends - walking distance to beach, pubs, cafes and shops. The rooms were beautiful and comfortable, as well as all the facilities. Hosts were responsive and happy to help with anything. Ideal for hosting a 30th birthday!

We had the most incredible weekend staying here, the photos do not do the house justice with quite how incredible it is!

It really has everything you could need and the team were beyond accommodating with early/late check out and answering any questions.

The beds were comfortable, the kitchen was stocked with everything you could possibly need.

The only feedback we could think of is to have a little more freezer space and to have mini shampoo & conditioner in the bathrooms.

The perfect stay!

We booked this large rambling historic house for a family gathering of 18, including small children, and it was perfect. The house itself is very interesting and characterful with an interesting history. It is well equipped with just about everything you could need - the piano was nice to have, lots of games, books, TV with lots of channels, hi-fi system, smart speakers in many of the rooms. The weather was good so we enjoyed eating outside, and tennis on the tennis court (lots of rackets provided), football goals for kids games, a croquet set. The grounds are picturesque with nice views and well kept by gardeners who appeared one day. Keepers Cottages were very good at making sure everything was going smoothly, and responded quickly to the only problem we had (a leaking sink waste pipe).

The house is amazing, perfect location right next to a castle. The grounds are wonderful. It's the ideal location for a large group. Also kids will love the "Harry Potter" style of the stairs and nooks and crannies in the house.

Points of attention:
- We found a piece of glass on the bedroom floor, reported it to Keepers Cottages. Fortunately, no injuries.
- A plumber came unannounced to the house to fix the downstairs toilet which was not working when we arrived. After he left, it still did not work.
- A gardener also came unannounced to the house at 8am on Friday morning. He told us he's been doing that every week for many years.
- Some of the email communication was frustrating.

Generally though, the above comments are minor compared to the amazing property!

This is an unusual house with many passages, nooks and crannies and a beautiful garden in a wonderful location. There was plenty to do for all of us from 2 years old to 70 … football, tennis, trampolining, croquet and hide and seek. The beach is only a ten minute walk away and there are lots of places a short drive away. We all enjoyed our stay at Glen Hill.

As a large party of four adults and eight teenagers, we found Glen Hill pretty much ideal. The house itself is sprawling and quirky with multiple staircases and even an organ room; the grounds are vast, with tennis court, trampoline, and plenty of places for teens to squirrel themselves away. Accommodation is generous and actually rather better (in terms of usable beds) than the website suggests.
A couple of caveats. First, it’s not the place to go if you want wow interiors: everything is perfectly serviceable and clean, but a little shabby and dated. Second, the number of bathrooms is quite tight for a houseful, and they’re fairly Spartan, especially in terms of water pressure!
This said, it’s a great location for a dog-friendly family break.
