..... and I love it as much now as I did the very first time I visited 21 years ago - in fact probably more, because some of my happiest memories were made at the Tranquil Otter, with my late partner.

After Mo's death in December 2024, I didn't think I'd ever return to, what was, 'our happy place'. Indeed, it took me until June of this year to finally come back and I am SO glad I did - it was like coming home. Have now visited 4 times since June, and am booked to visit again with friends in November, December and April of next year. Currently planning a sneaky wee two night visit in October too!

The sheer tranquility of this wonderful place is incredible - so near Carlisle and yet SO quiet and peaceful. On this visit we had an AMAZING afternoon tea, which I would highly recommend, although don't plan on eating anything else for the rest of the day! We visited Keswick on the Saturday and coming back to relax in the hot-tub was great. The ducks visited .... just one duckling left, sadly, but we fed them duck food (available to purchase from the Otter team).

I really can't say enough good things about the Tranquil Otter - thank you, as ever, to Fiona and the team.

So, visit number 86 for me! After my beloved Mo died, I said that I could never return to what had been our 'happy place', our bolt hole for almost 20 years. We were booked for New Year 2024 but, sadly, Mo died on December the 29th that year and we never got to enjoy visit number 85.

Earlier this year, after a great deal of soul-searching, I decided that I wanted to try going back and, on the 19th of June, five of us stayed in Heron Lodge. I was very emotional to begin with, but it soon felt as if I had never been away and there were many laughs, and happy memories. I found leaving, on that occasion, hard because I was heading home without Mo, but have just spent another happy weekend, this time in Egret, with a friend and my retired greyhound.

Have two further visits booked for this year (so far!). The peace and tranquility that the Tranquil Otter affords gives me the headspace to deal with my grief and my thoughts.

Tazeem & Nick have been amazing at keeping in touch since Mo's death, as has the lovely Fiona, and I am EXTREMELY grateful for that as, without that continued contact, I would probably never have returned and I am SO glad that I did. Thank you!

Whatever your reason for visiting the TO, be it a celebration, a romantic break, a family holiday or just to get away from it all I cannot think of a better place to do it.

I have nothing but great words for our stay.
Hidden away jay a few miles from Carlisle, these lodges are wonderful for a complete break from the chaos and noise of life.
We stayed in Egret and it couldn’t have been more perfect.
We loved the cosy accommodation, which felt more like home than a holiday lodge, and the views were incredible.
We didn’t think we’d use the little boat much, but it provided us with fun, peace and incredible tranquility.
Highly recommended if you want to just get away from it all x

Lovely cabins, have stayed here four times now and will come back. We love the short walk around the site for our two german shepherds as one is a retired working dog who isn't very sociable so its great to be able to take him on his holidays and after all his hard work protecting humans Good boy

This was our 3rd visit, our 2nd to egret lodge. New sofas since the last time were great. The tranquil otter is a truly outstanding place. So peaceful and gorgeous with the beautiful birdsong and the amazing entertainment watching the swans, geese, herons and ducks perform fly by's across the lake. So many gorgeous birds in the water and at the feeders, loved the woodpecker and the goldfinch. Lots to do nearby if you can tear yourself away. We had the added bonus of great April weather. The staff are all amazing, so friendly and helpful. We got back yesterday and have already booked for a visit next year, it's a place you must visit.

We enjoyed every minute of our 4 night stay in the Egret Lodge. It was the perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. The lodge had everything you could want, comfy beds, hot tub and sauna and a fabulous view across the Lough. There was a lovely walk through the woods surrounding the Lough and plenty of birdlife to see. The staff were really helpful and the whole site was well run, a real credit to them. We can't wait to visit again!

Booked three nights in Egret Lodge for my wife's birthday and it was absolutely perfect! The lodge is very spacious, well kitted out, clean and extremely comfortable to stay in. The sauna and hot tub were amazing, and we even made it out on the lake in the flat bottom boat when we got some sunshine! Very peaceful few nights away and we're already planning a return trip next year with friends. Would highly recommend

It was an absolute pleasure to stay here. The lodge itself was immaculate. The facilities were brilliant. We had the lodge completely to ourselves, and if there were any other people in other lodges we didn't see them. The tub was lovely especially in the cold weather.

I think this could be the most relaxing and peaceful place I’ve ever been to. The lodge itself was amazing, very cosy and very clean. It had everything you could possibly need for your stay. We made use of the hot tub and sauna, fab!!

We lead busy lives owning a bar and restaurant and needed a complete rest away from the business and people ….. we could not have asked for more ! Probably the best location we have ever stayed and the lodge was luxury, the luxury welcome pack worth every penny ! The little sail around the lake in our personal boat a great laugh . 5 star and well deserved, already planning our return …. Forest holidays should visit the Tranquil Otter and learn from it .

We very much enjoyed our time at the Tranquil Otter in Egret Lodge.
The sauna was superb and the hot tub was great once my husband figured out the controls. There was plenty of space for all four of us (2 adults and 2 grown up children) the whole stay was very dog friendly with a secure outdoor area. The welcome basket was a very generous touch. We had only a couple of niggles, we didn't have enough hot water to fill the bath in the main bathroom which was a little disappointing and the only other issue was the privacy on the Monday morning, our check out time was 11am but we had staff on the decking (outside the bedroom window) from 9am emptying the hot tub and cleaning it and lots of staff going about they routine dropping fresh linen off ect. We understand this has to be done but we had envisioned having a coffee on the decking and enjoying an hour or so to relax before our journey home which was not possible and did feel like we were almost rushed out which was a shame as the rest of the time we spent was very private and relaxing. Overall this is a lovely place to stay to catch up with family in beautiful surroundings

This was my third stay and hopefully not my last - its a total joy staying in these excellent cabins especially my one this time having it's own sauna - bliss. Even though they were on offer I found that I did not need to watch tv or listen to music the birdsong was enough for me. I was impressed with the welcome pack including a personal message that made me feel at home straight away. Everyone was kind and helpful - so a big thank you.

The most peaceful place we've been to. Beautiful surroundings and so quiet. It's so lovely listening to the birds and watching all the wildlife looking over the lake. We saw herons, swans, ducks and ducklings, moorhens and bats among others. Lodges are extremely comfy, spotlessly clean and well equipped. Close by to supermarkets and would recommend the birds of prey centre 2 minutes away for a special falconry experience on the doorstep. This was our 2nd visit to tranquil otter last time staying in fieldfare and still the gorgeous views took our breath away. Both lodges amazing but loved the extra room and washing machine in this one. Staff are all amazing and couldn't be more helpful when phoning pre holiday and during our stay. Thanks again, we'll be back again.

There are no words to describe how perfect this place is - it’s an absolute gem and I simply did not want to leave! The lodge itself was so comfortable, cosy and clean…… with everything provided that you could possibly need, and views to die for! It’s so well set out, offering privacy and seclusion in a stunning location and you feel like it’s you very own ‘slice of paradise’, away from the hustle and bustle of day to day life! Loved using the hot tub, especially at night where you can relax in the soothing bubbles, looking up at the stars whilst drinking in the solitude. It’s everything and more you could want if you want to get away from it all and reconnect with nature; a million miles away from those lodge parks where ‘entertainment’ is the order of the day - this is a place where you can truly relax and forget the world. Can’t wait to go back - hopefully for longer this time!

A lovely break at the Tranquil Otter, our first time here. My husband and our cocker spaniel enjoyed the surrounding walks around the lake. I enjoyed sitting by the fire and relaxing! Hot tub was stunning. My only suggestion is perhaps some sort of light by the door code unit especially in winter as it’s dark when you arrive.

This was our second stay at the Tranquil Otter and yet again, it didn’t disappoint.

With a lovely setting overlooking the Lough, checking in was a doddle, with the team providing you with all of the details well in advance and having instant access to your lodge. A personalised welcome message, accompanied by a hamper of goodies, a selection of chocolates and a chilled bottle of bubbly really helped to take the edge off a couple of hours drive.

As always, the lodge was perfectly set out and couldn’t be more clean or welcoming. Immediately the kids wanted to throw open the hot tub and enjoy a hot soak under the amazing blanket of stars visible to the naked eye.

Being close to the border, our stay included a trip to Gretna - only about 20 minutes up the road. This was followed by a couple of beers in The Royal Oak, a warm and welcoming pub just around the corner.

Saturday night was rounded off by a nice meal, some time in the excellent sauna and then star gazing from the deck in the hot tub.

The final treat was the use of our own canoe, supplied with safety gear for a dad and lad paddle around the Lough, surrounded by plenty of ducks and swans.

I can’t recommend this place highly enough to do it justice and it’s even better when you receive a discount as a returning guest on your next stay.

We will be back in 2025, without a doubt.

We had a fantastic stay at the Tranquil Otter, the lodges are of a high quality, extremely clean and well kept. They are a great size, very spacious and comfortable for a family of 4 with a dog. The surrounding area is stunning and a perfect location for sightseeing locally. It is extremely well equipped with everything you need and the welcome hamper is a lovely touch, even treats for our dog Mabel!

There was a slight issue with our hot tub on arrival but the way in which they dealt with it was over and above, even providing fizz and chocolates as an extra (thank you)

We would definitely recommend staying here and hope to return!

Warm and cozy our weather was wet and cool but we were warm and comfortable perfect location lots of wildlife on the doorstep. Well equipped kitchen immaculately clean we will definitely be back
