The lake view from the lodge and the hot tub are wonderful. However, a number of things in the lodge seriously damaged the experience. The bathroom is absolutely the worst that I have come across amongst all hotels/ lodges I have stayed at. There is no raised edge/ enclosure to the shower area, and the drainage apparently does not work quite well. So half the bathroom became flooded only after a 5-minute shower. Another issue is the ongoing, loud humming noise from the bathroom ventilation fan. It is so loud that it spreads to the bedroom and living room. There is not a separate switch to turn off the fan, so the fan runs whenever the light is on, and it continues to run for around 10/15 minutes after the light is turned off. Of course the noise is worst inside the bathroom. Despite the site's emphasis of tranquility, the ventilation fan's noises are sooo disturbing.
Also, when we first entered the lodge, we were surprised there is not any closet/hooks at the entrance for hanging coats. Later we realsed that the closet with wooden door to the right of the main entrance is a cloakroom rather than an utility cupboard - despite the large Shark hoover sitting inside. Somehow the cleaner chose to put the hoover there rather than the utility cupboard. We had to move the hoover (which is dirty and rather disgusting) to the utility cupboard ourselves. This is the not standard I expected from a lodge which costs me over £300 a night. I am definitely not returning.

We very much regret that other aspects of your stay adversely affected your overall experience. We understand your concerns regarding the bathroom with water spreading across the floor. This level-access, open design, instead of a raised enclosure, is a design feature offering accessibility for all our guests with varied mobility needs. We appreciate that this style of bathroom can feel different from a more traditional shower, and we are sorry that your experience was affected by the water spreading further than it should. We will certainly review the drainage to ensure it is working as intended. We are also sorry to hear that the noise of the recently renewed ventilation fan disturbed your stay. Tranquillity is an important part of the experience we aim to provide, and we will investigate the fan and its operation. Regarding the entrance storage and the hoover left in the cloakroom, we apologise that this was not presented appropriately. This is certainly not the standard of presentation we expect, and we will address this with our housekeeping team. We are disappointed that these issues have led you to decide not to return, but we sincerely appreciate you bringing them to our attention. The lodge was located in a lovely area, right next to a lake.
The booking should be made more clearer, as we was looking for a place to take our 2 Golden retrievers. This place was perfect, but nothing was mentioned during the booking about having to pay extra for dogs. I don't have an issue with paying extra for them, but this should have been made clearer on the booking form itself. We found this out the following day, when the owner came to our lodge and mentioned that dogs have to be checked in and paid for. £40 for 1 and £60 for 2 dogs. Please make the booking process clearer for people who wish to take their pet with them, and not dropping it on them after arrival.
With it being a last minute booking, you have the option of booking extras. In our case we asked for a box of games and a hot tub towel, which was brought to us the next day, as this was missed, but not a problem. The only issue I had, was with the hot tub towel. You would be better to bring your own, or just use the towels provided. It's not expensive to pay for the so called hot tub towel, but really not worth it, and not useable, so don't waste your time or money.
Would I go back ? Not sure if I'm honest. Nice lodge, but I didn't get the welcoming feeling from them, unlike other places we've stayed at.
Would I recommend it to other people? Not really, but I would make them aware of certain things.
It is in my opinion too expensive for what you get, and there are better for this price, sorry
We booked for 2 nights, but we left only after 1 night. You can't beat the comfort of your own home.

Regarding the dog charge, we’re sorry you felt this wasn’t clear. The charge is stated on the first page of the booking form, directly underneath the hot tub towel information, as well as in other areas of the booking information. We’re also sorry that the games and hot tub towel were missed initially and had to be delivered the following day. We appreciate that these should have been ready for your arrival. Regarding the hot tub towel, although you didn’t specify what you found unsuitable about it, these towels are specifically designed for maximum drying after using the hot tub and are therefore different from our bath towels. We’re sorry you decided to leave after one night, but we do appreciate your feedback and will take your comments on board. Thank you again for taking the time to review us.

We had our first stay with The Tranquil Otter, which will become the first of many future stays, as I have never felt so at one with nature and completely relaxed.
The Chiff Chaff Lodge is of a very high standard, well presented and very clean, which is hard to do when you are in woodlands. the lodge is perfect for a couples retreat, and there is nothing more relaxing than sitting in the hot tub, with the wind rustling through the trees and the chirping of the many species of birds that reside on the lake and in the woodlands.
The lodge has everything you will need, from cooking to cleaning, and the Tranquil Otter has thought about everything right the way down to a set of binoculars and a book covering the species of birds within the UK.
The rowing boat offers the freedom to roam out onto the lake to obtain a closer view of the lake and the wildlife. But the view of the Lake from the private secluded veranda is just as amazing whether you are sat out on the furniture or in the hot tub.
We were visited regularly by ducks, swans, geese and Little Grebe's, who love to be fed with the food that you can purchase from the Tranquil Otter team. Make sure you buy plenty of food, as my wife was a little zealous with feeding the wildlife.
Amazingly the wife messaged the Tranquil Otter team on the weekend, who kindly dropped off more food for us while we were out exploring the local area. The wife was soooo happy when we got back to the lodge and there was more food there on the table, (Thank you to the Tranquil Otter team, for being there when we needed you).
The walks around the Lough are relaxing and offer additional views of the lake from differing aspects, and there are plenty of English Heritage sites to visit within a short drive of the lodge, if you want to venture out.
There are supermarkets within a short drive away if you want to stock up on food and drink, and plenty of restaurants in Carlisle if you want to eat out. (I highly recommend Foxes Cafe, if you are a breakfast person).
If you need a relaxing time, I highly recommend the Tranquil Otter to wash away the stresses of day to day life.

A very relaxing break. The location of the lodge looking out over the lake was was peaceful. Despite it's close proximity to other lodges, there was no noise, and are not overlooked by anyone so you can enjoy relaxing in the hot tub. The bed was comfortable, and everything was provided for a self contained break.
The management were very attentive and were willing to resolve any issues immediately. Can't fault them.
The only issues that could be improved on in hindsight, the sofa was a little tired and could do with the seat supports tightened or replaced, and the boat was fun, but could do with shorter handgrips on the oars and better "rollocks" to fit the oars.
But overall, a fantastic little break.

Our stay at Chiffchaff Lodge (Hot‑tub) was peaceful and relaxing, set in a quiet lakeside environment surrounded by nature. The lodge was clean, comfortable, and well‑equipped, offering a cosy atmosphere throughout our visit. The private hot tub added a luxurious touch and provided a perfect way to unwind while enjoying the calm water views and local wildlife.

What would make the experience even better is having a washing machine or access to one, especially for longer stays. It would also be helpful if the windows and doors had insect screens, so you could keep them open to enjoy the fresh air and the sounds of nature without worrying about insects coming inside.

Overall, the stay combined comfort, privacy, and beautiful scenery, making it a refreshing and memorable getaway.

My husband and I had a mini-moon here after we eloped and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Sitting in the hot tub surrounded my nature and the peace and quiet was blissful!

The cabin was very cosy and we had the added bonus of a smart tv and strong WiFi so we could cosy up and watch a film. There are lots of lovely walks but I advise you to bring wellies, they are off the beaten track.

We loved this break, it was exactly what we needed.
Gorgeous lodge, high standard of cleanliness.
Hot tub was perfect and we loved feeding the ducks. Super relaxing. Perfect location for a trip out to Carlisle and had a BBQ outside.
Highly recommend taking the boat out for a ride!! Thank you for a wonderful stay.

We just loved our stay at The Tranquil Otter in Chiffchaff lodge. Utter tranquility. Just us and the wildlife. Such a high standard of accommodation. It is beautifully furnished with everything you need.To wake up to the birds singing was amazing. The lodges are so private. The hot tub was amazing with views over the lake. We loved feeding the ducks and swans.
This is the perfect place for destressing from the pace of modern life whilst enjoying 5 star luxury. We were so sad to leave here, but we will be back.

Loved our stay, surroundings are beautiful. Very difficult to find via sat nav as it takes you to the bird of prey centre and you almost miss the entrance as its very difficult to see. I would say some of the additional charges seem steep such as early check in you practically lose a day being unable to check in till 4pm so a £40 charge to get in earlier is high given its expensive to stay overall. Lovely stay overall and the ducks are great !

Absolutely loved our stay here. The hot tub was lovely and relaxing. The fact we woke up to the sounds of ducks and birds and looked outside and could see them in the lake right next to us. Stepping outside it felt like we were camping which was lovely and relaxing, then we get to walk inside a super warm and cosy Lodge!

Fantastic private cabin on stunning lake. Booking, arrival, check in and out were all a breeze. Very dog friendly with safety gates and on site nature walks. Cabin was very well stocked. We got engaged at this cabin and the cabin was a beautiful scenic backdrop. Will definitely return in the future.

The lodge (Chiff chaff) was clean and comfortable. Unfortunately, we did not have good weather so did not use the hot tub.

We were disappointed with the boat as it was dirty, full of rain water and duck poo. When I enquired if the boat had a cover I was told no, because they blow off. It took my 1/2hr to empty the boat of water with the little scoop provided. We ventured out on to the lake but it was not easy to manoeuvre and one of the oar brackets was broken. The lake needs clearing of weed.

Booked for 4 nights and enjoyed every minute.

From arriving to a very comfortable lodge and seeing the lough right outside was a breath of peace and calm.

The walks around the lough had clear footpaths and well maintained. You could hear a pin drop it was that quiet, apart from little birds chirping along the way.

Spotted couple of squirrels but sadly it was the grey pests and not gorgeous reds.

Chilling out in the hot tub and on the decking, watching the ducks and hens at waters edge was relaxing.

Our dog had a couple of single barks seeing the ducks in front of her from the decking but on a whole she wasnt interested.

The cabin had absolutely everything in it and every consideration given to kitchen utensils/equipment, bath robes, towels, floor upright fan incase too hot etc. Rare to find a tall 50/50 fridge freezer as usually only small fridge with little freezer box.

After reading this, and you want a total stress release and relaxing break, we would totally recommend.

Three nights in the ChiffChaff lodge. The location is stunning and the lodge is beautiful, equipped with everything that you could possibly need.
The degree of tranquillity can sometimes dictated by 'the neighbours' but not bad enough to spoil it. The addition of a jacuzzi tub on the decking overlooking the lake makes the experience luxurious in the extreme. The bed is crisp and very comfortable and the bathroom puts most hotels to shame.

The wildlife is interesting. There were ducks at the back of ChiffChaff - we had clearly come to stay on their spot! They were semi-tame and would occasionally venture onto the decking. When evening falls the silence, punctuated by the calling of waterfowl is wonderful. The area is also rich in bats darting between the trees.

Free good quality WiFi is provided. Which is just as well because there is nothing else in the area for miles. Which is kind of the point. This is a place to and 'get away from it all'. Would love to experience this place during other seasons.

We have been to hot tub lodges before but never anywhere that has your pets in mind.
This was a small family break and it was the first time we hired a high chair, it was so clean and the place was immaculate when we got there.
We will be back, the whole place was better than we thought.

We loved staying here. The lough is beautiful and the opportunity to be so near the bird life is delightful. We enjoyed the walk around the lough and the ease of visiting the Solway AONB, Hadrians Wall, and the Solway Air Museum.
There was an administrative slip up on key codes, with the result that we could not get in on arrival but this was soon sorted. Our welcome pack was addressed to an unknown 'Claire' rather than me so clearly à glitch in the system. Apart from that we had everything we needed. The first few days of warm weather enabled us to really enjoy the hot tub and view across the lake.

Such a lovely place that you can tell has been cared for so well by the team! Great to have access to a hot tub as well as a little boat for the water! Will definitely be coming back!

We previously stayed in the Tranquil Otter a couple of times I think 2021, around COVID.
So February 2025 We decided last minute to book a weekend that became available. We stayed 3 nights in Chiffchaff Lodge which is a 2 person lodge.
We had a fabulous break. So glad to see that this place has not gone downhill in the few years since we last stayed. Everything was perfect. The lodge is extremely well equipped, spotlessly clean. The bed and pillows are very comfortable. The welcome package is great and we enjoyed the biscuits and the chocolate. The barrow load of logs supplied is plenty for the three days I used them all but it was cold out so it was lovely to have the burner on in the afternoon as well as the evening. The lodge itself is not cold, in fact we even turned the heating off.
The hot tub is lovely, and for me it's the highlight, I spent far too long in it while looking across the lake or talking to the ducks and the swans. Plastic glasses are supplied if you want to have a little glass of fizz in the tub.
The robes are great for the hot tub, and the bath towels are enormous and soft.
The toiletries are lovely
Things I wish I had taken included olive oil for cooking and sauces etc, although salt and pepper is supplied. I took some kitchen roll and also tinfoil and used it for lining the oven trays =less washing up, although there is a dishwasher and tablets.
The only thing I didn't like and it's probably being picky is the entrance ramp to the lodge is covered in a phenomenal amount of bird droppings. It had been brushed for our arrival but just kept coming I was worried because it felt like we were trailing bird poo into the lodge floors and mats each time we came in. We did take our shoes off as soon as we got in. I did brush some of it off the ramp a couple of times but it is a losing battle. I'm not sure what can be done to prevent that other than perhaps extending a sheltered bit over the ramp.
All in all I can highly recommend the peace and quiet of the Tranquil Otter. The lodges are the best equipped we have stayed in. These lodges are probably a little more expensive than others, but worth it. You get what you pay for. We will definitely be back.

Very lovely stay for the 2nd time. A bit dusty on the TV cabinet and we could have done with instructions for the TV. We used to live in Carlisle so it was lovely catching up with friends. Needed a peaceful break and that’s exactly what we got. We’ll certainly be back. If you can inform us of any future offers that would be very appreciated.

Had the most amazing 2 night stay at ChiffChaff lodge for our 10th anniversary! The lodge was so cosy and clean just what we needed! The little touches of the welcome hamper to include our pooch Patch was lovely and made us feel so welcome would definitely recommend Tranquil Otter a lovely site with beautiful lodges surrounded by wildlife! First time staying here. The lodge is very luxurious and has everything you'd expect and need for a comfortable stay. One minor gripe, would've liked an extra (outdoor) towel for the hot tub. The setting is beautiful. The lodges are at the side of a lake and you are provided with a boat to row around it - very relaxing and peaceful. The lodge was private and cozy. Would highly recommend.

After staying here annually for over 10 years, we know where to book when we need that "get away from it all" place. Everything is as good today as it was in 2010. We have tried different seasons over the years and never been disappointed with anything..NOT EVEN THE WEATHER. .

We had an amazing time in Chiffchaff Lodge! The lodge is perfect & has everything you need. Going outside in the morning & being greeted by ducks & swans, what a privilege! I could just sit there all day! The hot tub was spotless too, just what you need after a day's walking! This is the nicest lodge we have ever stayed in, we will be back!

This was our second visit which is unusual as we don’t usually go back but the Tranquil Otter is an exception to our rule
The chiffchaff lodge extremely well appointed for all your needs
The location is why you visit as the views from each lodge are stunning over the Lough the wild bird life is captivating and to help you bliss out more a fabulous spacious hot tub with a fabulous view
What more could you ask for oh great customer service not that we needed anything more other than more duck food but staff on site are always very friendly and helpful

I booked a last minute break and was offered ChiffChaff lodge at a slight discount and a early check in at 15:00. I arrived and was amazed by the lodge and the location. I had also booked a massage with Georgina for 4pm and what a way to start the weekend. The lodge did what it said on the tin, but i was disappointed by the cleaning in the bathroom, the showerhead in particular was in need of a very good clean. Sitting out on the decking making friends with the ducks and swans was lovely. The fresh pint of milk in the fridge was a nice touch. There was a rowing boat to use, but because of all the rain it had quite a bit of water in it, and i didnt feel i could safely bail it out on my own. The lodge burner was delightful, as the weather was not in my favour this was a welcome addition. I would definitely like to stay again and bring the family next time.

We loved every minute of our weekend away, from booking to check out, it was the smoothest weekend ever. We were informed at every step over the weeks before we arrived and the website has every single bit of detail you could ever need so we knew exactly what was in the lodge before we arrived. The keyless entry was fantastic and the view was incredible. We were celebrating a birthday so the welcome sign, birthday card and bubbles were very well received. The hot tub was great and the location was just perfect for the very tranquil surroundings. We took food with us but did get a takeaway from the recommended place on the login and would eat there again! Will definitely be back.

My husband and I stayed for three nights in Chiffchaff Lodge at The Tranquil Otter, amazing is the word to use, lovely cosy lodge with everything you need included, very private with a beautiful view across the lake ( boat included )
and a fabulous hot tub on the private decking to finish the day. This was our second stay and I can see a third visit in the near future.

The lady who rang to help with the booking was personable, friendly and very helpful, and even offered up an upgrade as the hot-tub in the cabin we'd looked to book wasn't available for the dates we were looking for.

The cabin felt as if there was no-one around for miles, was very comfortably appointed, with a private deck and view across the lake. We were looking for a complete getaway, and couldn't have asked for anything more - we will definitely be going back again.

Absolutely Marvellous!

I didn't realise that it was possible with a child under 2 , to combine luxury, in the countryside without compromising on ones privacy and managing to experience pure serenity all at once - well we did at the Tranquil Otter.

Waking up naturally to the dawn chorus, the mix of fresh coffee and forest dew to stimulate yet relax the senses with a view to calm even the most active mind (and toddler)
We shall return.

Well equipped comfortable lodge in a picturesque setting .ideal for the dog with a closed in verandah and lovely walks around the lake.
Lots of thoughtful touches provided including plenty of logs for the burner and even a pint of milk.
We had our own little boat to go punting around the lake .very relaxing time watching the wildlife.on an evening we had a bbq or could have sat in thd hot tub with a gkass of bubbly.perfect .
