The Abbey buildings are in a really lovely location on Loch Ness and look right up the loch. The original Abbey buildings are very beautiful and it is a real pleasure to wander through the cloisters and the grounds. Abbey Church 10 is in one of the newer extensions and is very close to the main atrium and swimming pool area. In fact, the kitchen window looks down into the atrium. In an old building it is understandable that there would be restrictions on space and that is probably why the layout of this apartment is a little quirky. The apartment is very linear with the kitchen at one end of the apartment and the living room at the other. The kitchen is a little oppressive as there is only one window so it does not get much natural light. There are also a couple of steps down and then back up again into the kitchen area. The kitchen was fine but a bit light on equipment if you want to cook more than basics. (Suggestions as to what was lacking: tablespoon/serving spoons, only one frying pan, no baking trays, something like a gratin/lasagne dish, another pan larger than the ones in the cupboard but smaller than the really big one, more crockery, more cutlery). The master bedroom is a large, nicely decorated room with a double bed and an en suite bathroom with bath and separate shower. The bed was not very comfortable as the mattress was a bit saggy. The twin bedroom is quite small, has no hanging clothing storage and the bathroom for this room is at the other end of the corridor. The second bathroom has a bath (no shower), sink and toilet. The living room is nicely laid out with two comfortable sofas, wall mounted TV, second dining table and four chairs and has views over the lawn with glimpses of Loch Ness through the trees. Phone signals and wifi here can be erratic but we found that the wifi down in the snooker room was fine. Overall, we enjoyed our holiday here and Fort Augustus is a great base for visiting the Highlands.
