The Firemans House

The Firemans House is a converted outside of Torr Vale Mill, one of 5 cottages. When the mill installed steam power it meant that there would need to be a constant fire burning in the boiler rooms in order to keep up a head of steam. If fire was to break out in a working cotton mill the results would be catastrophic, so a full-time fireman was in residence and this cottage is a lovely conversion of his original living quarters. The cottage is unusual in as much as the two bedrooms are on the ground floor and the living rooms are on the first floor in order to take advantage of the elevated views over the mill and down the valley to the River Goyt, and you may even get to see the occasional steam train on its way to Edale. The Firemans House has been lovingly restored with furnishings that offer the comforts of modern living so you won’t be expected to bathe in a tin bath in front of the fire!

Great hols had by all!

We had a great time in the Peaks. This house is in a good position. We really liked the area and the Mill - great walk direct from the house. The pub on the site is great and we participated in the quiz nite which was fun.

The only downside for us was that there were no clothes drying facilities - the washing machine is in a little shed building apart from the house which was ok for us but no dryer and a tiny airer in the house which was ineffectual.

Other than this the house is great for exploring the area. There are good facilities nearby and it's easy to get to the main places of interest in the area.

The location was excellent with attractive views of trees ( including wych elms) and the river. Convenient for the central station and nearby shops such as the Co-op. The cottage was well equipped with all the necessary facilities, apart from the provision of heating, which would have been appreciated, considering the unseasonal cold weather.

We loved our stay very much and would highly recommend. The Fireman's house was perfect for us and comfortable. It had all the necessary items for a really pleasant experience. There was even welcome bowls, ball and basket for our dog that was such a lovely thought. It felt really clean and so welcoming. Rob was amazing as we bumped into him on arrival and he was so helpful and kind. What a great guy to have on the team. It was so lovely to be so close to the countryside but also so close to all the villages in the surrounding areas. Would absolutely stay again and will tell everyone about it.

We stayed in the Fireman's House during the weekend of our daughter's wedding.

The cottage is literally across from the Cotton Mill which is where the wedding reception was held.

There is a tiny parking place for a small car just outside the cottage. It is on a very steep incline and very tight so getting out of the car is difficult.

When you enter the cottage, at the bottom of the staircase to the left (opposite bedroom 1) is a raised stone slab. As this was a potential tripping hazard we left the hallway light on 24/7 to avoid accidents.

The cottage itself is on two levels. 2 comfortable double bedrooms on the ground floor - one with a king-size bed. We found the king-size bed to be very comfortable and firm. However, my daughter thought the double bed was a bit too firm for her.

Upstairs (about 12 steep steps up) is a compact but well equipped kitchen (our host provided some milk, bread and croissants with jam which was a lovely touch), a spacious bathroom with a toilet and shower (no handrails inside the shower, but a bathmat was provided) and a very comfortable lounge with 2 large sofas (both two-seaters), a coffee table, TV and a dining table and chairs. It would have been nice to have had a couple of table lamps in the lounge to make it more cosy at night.

We loved the cottage because it was beautifully decorated and very cosy, and very quiet at night.

Unfortunately I have limited mobility and so found the stairs very difficult (there is one handrail on the left as you go up). I especially found using the stairs during the night difficult when I needed to use the loo. However, if you're able bodied it is a beautiful place to stay. Just wear sturdy shoes whilst walking to and from the cottage as it is on a very steep uneven stony path!

Very comfortable, lovely breakfast tray.
No ventilation in the bathroom and couldn’t open bathroom nor bedroom windows.
Comfortable furniture and bedding. Really helpful staff. Perfect stay for 1 night for our friends’ wedding at the Mill.

A fantastic location to stay both in terms of the interesting setting of Torr Vale Mill itself, and convenient access to the High Peak area (and Manchester on wet days). Easy parking and access to local shops and train stations make it a good stay too.

This is the third time myself and a group of friends have come back here – the location is stunning, and it's really convenient for post-Kinder Scout evening drinks and dinner, with The Shrub club literally next door and the town a 5 minute walk away.

Good Bits- House is comfortable clean and well presented. Ideal access to good walks with plenty of local shops, restaurants and bars. The questionable, if it a self catering house why is there nowhere to store your shopping? Guests will have to remember to bring there own toilet rolls and washing up liquid and park at the top carpark it gets very tight towards the bottom of the hill, if you do need to get a car to the house, reverse down. We all enjoyed our stay and would visit again.

Very disappointed with our visit. The house reminds me of a student house cheaply finished dirty and not looked after, I received 3 email before we arrived reminding us to take slippers our own toilet roll, bin bags and dish washer tablets ?

On arrival you soon realise the pictures are skilfully taken. The Mill needs major investment and is probably a long term project. Inside the house has no character, the fixtures and fittings are cheap and need replacing. Cups , plates etc are all chipped. The shower is awful.
They advertised an electric car charger by appointment I emailed as requested as I have an electric car but on arrival found out the chargers were not even commissioned.
I was called during the week to ask when I was leaving as they needed to organise cleaners. I was booked to leave by 10am Monday but left early.

Philippa Cunningham replied more than 1 year ago
Dear Peter, We're sorry you were not happy with the accommodation, we were not aware of this until you wrote this review. As you are aware, the day you were due to leave was the queens funeral which presented us with an unexpected bank holiday hence we needed to contact all our guests who were leaving on that day to arrange our staffing and cleaning for the next set of guests. We're sorry if you were made to feel that you had to leave early as this was not our intention. We also apologise for not picking up your email request for the electric charger. We have recently had electric car chargers installed but they are not active at present and subsequently not advertised. We do advertise and offer an outside plug for ease of charging and also arrange a fee to use this. We noticed that you used The Firemans House electricity via a cable through the window to charge the car, something we have not charged you for as we do not know how much electric you used. The correspondence we send to guests prior to arrival are intended to be friendly suggestions. We do provide bin bags, toilet rolls and dishwasher tablets to all guests on arrival, the slippers are a suggestion for comfort. Our site is almost 250 years old and grade 2* listed. The full site can be seen via a 3D tour on our website so that guests can view it before they book with us and decide if it is to their taste or not. I'm sorry you were unhappy with your stay with us. We will of course look at all the issues you have commented on. In future, please make hosts aware of any issues within a property whilst you are staying there. We would have been more than happy to have addressed the matters as soon as we were made aware. Kind regards Torr Vale Mill Team

We stayed at the Fireman's house during a very stressful week away from our own home. The peaceful settings and the comfort of the Fireman's House as helped us to relax and unwind. Can not fault the service and level of care given from staff at Torr Vale Mill, especially Philippa who has gone above and beyond her role to help us during our stay. Will definitely recommend.

A lovely place to stay. We parked our car and did lots of walks from the doorstep. Accommodation was comfortable with additional home comforts such as blankets on the sofas. Towels were lovely and soft. Kitchen was well resourced. It was a delight to eat breakfast and watch the steam train go by. The evenings were quiet and we rarely heard our neighbours or people leaving the Shrub Club - think the lovely thick walls helped to isolate the sound. There was a good selection of DVD’s and books which we enjoyed. We had a lovely stay.

Had a thoroughly enjoyable Mon-Fri stay at the Fireman’s cottage. Philippa was very helpful and friendly, the cottage had everything we needed and was in good condition and comfortable. Walked from the cottage to Hayfield for lunch one day, jumped on the train to Edale to walk On the moors and visit Castleton on two other days. The restaurant and bar on site, shrub club, was also worth a visit.

The fireman house is a 3 storey house, the main entrance (the door) and the bedrooms are actually on the first floor, and the kitchen and living room is on the 3rd floor, so we felt very secured in the house, even thought it is on the path to the Shrub club.
The parking space is quite tight for an estate or medium SUVs, reversing to the space can be a challenge in the dark.

The accommodation was nice and clean, it looks like it has recently been repainted, so the windows and skirtings look very new. We had WiFi issues during our stay, I texted Philippa and she text me back straight away with suggestions. Although we couldn't get the WiFi to work, Philippa offered us some compensation to cover our extra mobile data costs.

In the living room you get a very nice view to the millennium walkway, the river, above the river was the railway track (it makes a lovely sound when the train passes) and a very tall chimney lit up during the night!

On our first night, we planned to have dinner at the Shrub, however the nice bar area was full and the only table available for us was at the canteen looking lower ground floor, so we headed out to the village centre for dinner instead. Luckily the village centre is only 10 minutes walk away.

The cheese wheel is opposite the Shrub and its well worth a visit while you are staying in Torr Vale Mill for a good selection of local and international beer, wine and cheese.

This is a hidden gem and we would highly recommend it.

Thank you Phillipa

We have just got back from a fabulous, relaxing stay in the Firemans House. From start to finish, the owner Philippa was so lovely and accommodating, nothing was too much trouble, even gave us a tour around the amazing Cotton Mill.
The accommodation was nice and clean, everything you need and the bed linen and beds were excellent quality and extremely comfortable.
Beautiful walks on your doorstep, waking up to the sound of the weir was delightful.
This is a hidden gem, with a lovely pub and cheese shop literally a minute's walk away in the Mill's court yard.
Cannot recommend Torr Vale Mills enough.

Lovely cottage in amazing setting. The river is constantly changing, lots to see and do around. Shrub Club very handy for food and a drink. Cheese Wheel for artisan beers and cheese. The parking spot is perfect for being close to the cottage but beware when reversing out if your car is big. I recommend google street view of the last few streets when arriving as the end of Torrvale Road looks more like a footpath/track than the correct route to the mill. We had some issues with the WiFi dropping out but excellent response from the owner. The proximity of the railway adds to the interest of the view and we really didn’t notice the sound. Lots of info in the online portal - link sent a few days before you stay.
