Although all lodges are furnished and laid out identically the images are representational as each lodge is positioned differently on site.

Two gorgeous en suite bedrooms including a king size and twin mean plenty of room for up to four guests, with the open-plan living areas opening out on to a large wraparound deck with a private hot tub and views over the lake and landscaped gardens.

Kentisbury Grange is also home to The Coach House restaurant where gorgeous locally-sourced produce is transformed into mouth-watering delicacies that can be enjoyed in a superb setting.

For a lodge advertised on a website called ‘Luxury Coastal’, Combe Lodge unfortunately does not live up to this billing.

From the gorgeous images we had viewed online when booking, we had high expectations for our stay. There is no denying the outlook across the lake from the decking is beautiful and we could not fault the lovely bathrooms/kitchen and their spacious layout. The hot tub being one of the main reasons we booked this accommodation is a great size, albeit some of the jets appeared to not be working properly despite my attempts to adjust them. The location is also ideal for exploring with most of the main tourist places in the area being a 20-30 min drive away.

However, despite these positives, there were just far too many maintenance and cleanliness issues which left us feeling underwhelmed and deflated, especially given the price we had paid to stay somewhere we thought would be high quality.

On arrival, we were greeted by a very helpful member of staff who kindly provided a drink for our son who was suffering with a bit of travel sickness. The restaurant itself looked fantastic but with the prices being charged (even breakfast was £15 per person), we opted against eating there during our stay.

The parking for this particular lodge is slightly inconvenient as it is not as close as the others but appreciate this cannot be helped. What could have easily been prevented though was the wet wipe, beer can and crisp packet which had been left alongside the path towards our lodge. After taking in the beautiful view of the lake, our attention was soon diverted to the amount of cobwebs, dirty windows and dustiness as we opened the door. It was as if the cleaning team had not had enough time to do everything.

As we then further explored the different rooms, we could not quite believe the number of areas in need of repair. There were multiple dents in doors, door frames broken, a smashed window in the main bedroom, wardrobe doors not on their runners in both bedrooms, stains on the sofa, the living room tv unit framing was damaged, the fridge shelf/door was broken and the blinds were missing several slats. The carpets in both bedrooms are in urgent need of replacing as they are heavily worn, bumpy and with so many stains they are bordering on ‘grotty’. We fully appreciate certain problems pop up from time to time with any accommodation but in our eyes all of the above seem to have just been ignored given how obvious they are.

The living room/kitchen floor also needs ripping up and relaying due to the apparent water damage but we accept this is not a quick fix.

Overall, the Combe Lodge has the potential to be something special but not in its current state. In terms of value for money, we feel the £1000 paid for a 4 night stay is not worth it and that the current online images suggest you are paying for something a lot more prestine than you actually get.

The setting of the Lodge was superb as were the staff at Kentisbury Grange, however, the lodge itself was tired and hadn't been cleaned very well. Hand prints on the mirror and the fire was missing. We found cheesy wotsits behind the speakers (well the dog did) and that showed it hadn't been cleaned to a proper standard for our arrival. There was a smashed window in the main bedroom. The door latch was broken as was the door frame into the bathroom. No welcome pack on arrival as stated when we booked and we had to ask for a tea towel & washing up sponge. When I told the team that the latch on the bedroom door was broken they were very quick to fix it. I personally wouldn't come here again.

Coombe Lodge would really benefit from a deep clean and some TLC, as it is showing signs of wear and tear.
When we arrived the sink was full of dirty water and the induction hob was filthy and I had to wash the crockery before we could use it. The beds were clean and comfortable and the bathrooms were clean and the shower was very good. Parking is a bit tricky as (unlike the other lodges) there is no allocated space.
Overall the lodge is comfortable and spacious with all required amenities, however the internet service is unreliable and weather dependent and the TV is not connected to the WiFi so you cannot access streaming services. The lodge is sited on a very pretty lake but unfortunately (unlike the other lodges) the hot tub has absolutely no privacy, this put us off using it. Also the hot tub has been installed the wrong way round and the steps to climb down into it are not accessible as up against the fence, so getting in and out was a bit tricky. Also we would have liked to have been able to control the temperature.
The decking needs a wash as covered in bird excrement and we were visited by a rat several times (we did inform reception about this).
We visited the restaurant for Sunday lunch and were very impressed with the food and the overall dining experience and so we decided to go for breakfast before we went home which was a mistake. Unfortunately the breakfast service was slow and the food was badly cooked (vegetarian sausages burnt and eggs under cooked) and there was only granary bread available as their delivery had not arrived. Breakfast is £15 per person and for that price we expected better.
Would we would stay again? Yes, but in a different lodge.

Beautiful lodge very quiet and had everything we needed. There was a few little things that need updating. The wardrobe would not stay on the rail my husband had to fix it .we did report it so hopefully will now be OK. The hot tub was great and the view over the pond was lovely. Really enjoyed our stay .

Call reception on arrival as dirty towel in washing machine.
Blood on bed sheets.
Valances dirty and stained.
Maintenance poor. There has been a leak and this was not redecorated.
Door handles loose
Doors peeling and lock hanging off.

The setting is beautiful, the restaurant is super, the location is great.
This was our second stay but disappointed with lodge this time.

We had an amazing stay and our lodge was beautiful overlooking the lake
The hot tub was a bonus and very clean.
Down side was we where along way from everywhere and being winter as well there wasn’t anything to do so was a little bored as we stayed a week.

This is the second time we have stayed in one of these beautiful lodges and this time did not disappoint. The location is stunning and the lodges are very clean, comfortable and have everything you need. The hot tub is great to come back to after a day out to chill out and they are regularly maintained. There is a lovely restaurant and bar onside. We thoroughly recommend these lodges and will definitely return.

Staff were friendly and courteous and the grounds and general location are lovely. The lodges are tired and dated and could benefit from a refurbishment. Lodges are Reasonably well equipped, but short on cutlery and no decent sized glassware.

We booked the lodge because we needed a home from home setting as we took a disabled parent with us and we needed the space which was on offer.

We couldn’t have asked for more. If there was any negatives these were minor apart from potentially looking into installing a hoist to enable those people who cannot step up easily to enter the hot tub.

My parent would have loved to have been able to get in and relax. Instead they had to watch others enjoy themselves instead.

We booked here because our glamping venue had technical problems and had to choose an alternative.
After travelling around during the day, we didn’t want to travel far or drive for evening meals; therefore, this location was excellent.
The accommodation was spacious, with everything need for self-catering (not that we ate in) with plenty of parking space on site.
The staff were very friendly and extremely helpful.
The rural location was quiet at night, allowing easy access to north Devon
The on-site restaurant was also very good, with varying options over the three nights we were there. A very good restaurant, only 2 mins walk away from the lodge, which was ideal.
Even though an early break (with expected low temperatures) after a day sight-seeing, it was nice to relax in a jacuzzi while gazing over the duck pond beyond the veranda, before walking to the restaurant.
We would certainly return and recommend it highly.
