The OLD BYRE (5 stars GOLD AWARD) is the perfect romantic hideaway, facing south with unrestricted and amazing views of the Manifold Valley. This superb cottage is ideal for couples wanting comfort, peace and quiet combining understated luxury with beamed ceilings and many original features. Downstairs there is an open-plan sitting room, dining room and new deluxe kitchen with granite worktops and integrated appliances. We have just installed a new wood-burning stove (biomass). Upstairs a galleried landing leads to a lovely double bedroom with “views to die for” (the opinion of one of our visitors). There is also a modern deluxe bathroom.

We wanted to visit the Peak District for the first time and found Swainsley Farm. The location is superb, within the River Manifold valley with great views southwards down the valley from the bedroom. It is also very peaceful with no traffic noise and very dark skies as there is no light pollution. We were warmly greeted by our host, Chris, who was at pains to make sure everything was just so. Our cottage was fitted out to a very high standard and it was warm and cosy, which was perfect after a hard day's walking up on Kinder Scout or just straight out of the door down the valley. It was helpful there was a washer dryer as well when we returned home liberally soaked from the weather. A mile up the hill in the village of Butterton was a great pub, the Black Lion, which produced delicious food (the lamb pie was really special) and served good beer. More widely, the access across the National Park is easy and everything was accessible in under an hour by car. Top notch place - I have already recommended to friends and will aim to go back.
