Wagonway Lodge has been beautifully restored to a high standard. Blending the old character of the building with ultra-modern accents, this is most certainly a 'wow' house. Situated a stone's throw away from the famous Barter Books book emporium, Wagonway Lodge is centrally situated for easily exploring the market town of Alnwick. It has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, an open plan living space, private parking, an enclosed outside space both lawned, gravel, and patio, and welcomes 2 medium-sized dogs. Free WiFi. Free Digital Guidebook.

There were a few positives about this property. The location is excellent and the secure garden is a big positive when travelling with the dog. The tumble dryer in the washing machine was a good asset too. The welcome pack was first class too.

Unfortunately there were a number of issues with the property. The bed linen on one bed, although obviously fresh, had marks resembling a dog paw print (ensuite bedroom). In the bedroom immediately beyond the bathroom, the kingsize mattress needs replaced or a memory foam topper added to it. It sagged towards the middle and the springs were uncomfortable and noisy. Pillows were lumpy and not best quality. The electric radiator in this room provides no heat when switched on and despite the central heating being on, this room was cold. Also the door to this bedroom doesn't close because the catch has been fitted the wrong way. Ordinarily we would have moved to the other bedroom but a blind had been damaged by the previous renters and the cleaner removed it making this room unusable for sleeping. In the main bathroom, there is clearly a problem with the shower valve in the freestanding shower - when you turn the water on, the whole valve moves making it difficult to regulate the water temperature.
If we had booked a longer stay we would have contacted the local contact - as we only had a 3 night stay we didn't.
Overall, after paying a thousand pounds for a 3 night stay, our view is that this property is too expensive for a 3 night break..... the property felt like it was nearing the end of the season! For that price, I expected real luxury. The photographs flatter the reality.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a detailed review. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed the excellent location, secure garden, and welcome pack, and that the washer/dryer was a useful addition during your stay. We’re sorry to hear about the issues you experienced. Had we been made aware during your visit, we would have done our best to resolve them straight away, especially as your stay was relatively short. Nonetheless, we really appreciate your feedback, which has now been passed on to the owner, who is actively investigating each of the points you've raised. Your comments about the mattress, pillows, radiator, door catch, and the shower valve are all being looked into carefully to ensure they are addressed promptly. We're also following up with the housekeeping team regarding the bed linen and temporary removal of the blind to ensure these issues do not impact future guests. Thank you again for your honest comments — they are invaluable in helping us maintain high standards and ensure the property meets expectations. We do hope you’ll consider staying with us again in the future.

Lovely cottage, tastefully and sympathetically restored. Spacious and well equipped. Tha welcome hamper was a lovely touch with delicious scones and many other treats. Cottage is only a few minutes walk from Alnwick Castle and other attractions and ideally placed for exploring Nortumberland.
We would have no hesitation in returning next year.

Excellent location to explore the beautiful Northumberland countryside. The cottage is well equipped with high end appliances, good wifi and large screen tv. The en-suite bedroom is very spacious and comfortable. A few niggles, the toilet door was very hard to close, a kitchen electric socket didn’t work and a bedroom radiator didn’t work. These niggles didn’t spoil the holiday . We had a lovely holiday!!!

Had a lovely week at Wagonway Lodge. Plenty of space for the 5 of us and 2 dogs. Beds comfortable, location excellent, outside space a real bonus. It is overlooked by other properties but we didn’t find this a problem. Welcome hamper and flowers a really nice touch. Even a hamper for the dogs. Only fault is a lack of cupboard space for your own food. Would definitely stay again.

Wagonway Lodge has been thoughtfully converted and the large central space - kitchen, dining area, sitting area running into each other - is large and airy. Beds are very comfortable but there is no blackout so we woke at 4am most mornings. It's a stone's throw to the excitement of Barter Books and a short walk into the historic centre, although the independent butcher has now closed, while the Co-op is low on fresh produce. We ended up driving out to the large retail park to the south of the town for all our food shopping.

Alnwick Castle and Garden (separate attractions) are both expensive and seemed to be mobbed with coach parties so we did not visit them, but the rest of the castles along the coast are stunning in their different ways. We also enjoyed visiting the gardens at Howick Hall and Wallington. Our guest dog had a great time on the sandy beaches.

The greatest disappointment was the 'enclosed garden', which turned out to be a large patio with dining table and upright chairs overlooked by the houses to the north. There were no loungers or sunshades. The small patch of grass right next to the neighbour's fence is too uneven for sitting out, so we ended up reading inside.

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful and detailed review of your stay at Wagonway Lodge. We're really pleased to hear that you found the property spacious and comfortable, and that you enjoyed exploring the many attractions of Northumberland, it’s always lovely to know our four-legged guests had a great time on the beaches too! We’re sorry to hear that the garden didn’t meet your expectations. While we don’t advertise loungers or sunshades, we do aim to provide a clear representation of the space through both images and a 3D virtual tour on our listing. We always encourage guests to refer to these before booking, and we're more than happy to assist with tailored advice for future stays if you have particular requirements for outdoor space or garden features. Thank you again for choosing to stay with us, and we’d be delighted to help you plan another Northumberland escape in the future.

I can't praise this accommodation high enough, it is in a perfect location for exploring Northumberland. The lodge was immaculate & very comfortable, high praise to the cleaning staff! We loved everything about this cottage, the beds were so comfy and the outdoor space was thoroughly enjoyed by our terrier Harry & ourselves for outside dining in the sunshine. The complimentary hamper that greeted us was delicious and such a lovely surprise. Thank you all so much for making our holiday so special, we shall be returning very soon xx

Nice property in a great location in Alnwick. Good customer service from Coquet Cottages and a lovely welcome pack. Heating wasn't always effective and at times the property felt cold. Beds were very comfortable. The kitchen and living area was a lovely socialising space but would benefit from better lighting.

Stayed at this property 3 years ago. Every bit as good this time. Excellent location in Alnwick. Very comfortable, spacious, clean. Very quiet despite central location. Good sunny area for sitting outside in the afternoon. Owner was very responsive to our request to check in earlier. Only slight negative was lack of wardrobe space in main bedroom.. we will definitely stay again

Overloaded outside bins on arrival and dog dirt left on the lawn was disappointing and I do think bins should be left clear for the next occupants.
Apart from that, we had a lovely stay and would recommend the property.

This was our 4th visit to Wagonway, it is in a great location in Alnwick- walking distance to shops, pubs, restaurants etc Short car drive to Sainsburys or M&S supermarket. A good base to explore the surrounding area. Modern comfortable house, 3 good size bedrooms, good storage space. Large open plan kitchen/diner/living. Tv has sky package. Quiet for sleeping. Comfy beds and duvets. Issues ok this occasion (minor) No corkscrew, no cafetiere, bins were already totally full outside, very small leak in roof due to heavy rain
