Walkley Wood Cottage is a charming Grade II listed Bath stone property set over 4 floors. With 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom, the cottage sleeps 4 (3 adults or 2 adults and 2 children is the most comfortable configuration). Enjoying a peaceful elevated position, Walkley Wood boasts beautiful views of the surrounding valley and neighbouring Cotswold stone properties.

A lovely bolthole.

A cosy cottage spread over four floors. We had a lovely week at Walkley Wood Cottage. The beds were particularly comfortable. It is very handy for exploring the Cotswolds.

We knew going in that this was an old home. However, starting in the kitchen, the open cupboards (boards/shelves) were filthy. We felt the need to wash all of the items that were stored on it. All of the surfaces could have used a better clean in the bottom two levels. The owners knew our length of stay and number of occupants, yet we did not have enough toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets nor garbage bags. Tea towels were unclean from the start.
The bedrooms were excellent. The beds and bedding are very comfortable, especially the upper level bedroom could be in a magazine.
There was a preoccupation with fire safety notices, yet the lower (kitchen) level fire exit door was blocked by the neighbours' paraphernalia.
Location was great and we loved the walks and the hills. And close access to pubs (The George).

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your recent stay at Walkley Wood Cottage. We have shared your feedback with the owner, who wishes that you had reported the cleanliness issues during your stay as they would have been happy to send someone out to the property to rectify these. With the toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets and rubbish bags it is advertised in the property welcome guide that a starter pack is supplied. The fire safety in the property is all in line with new regulations and the owner will look into your points regarding this.

We had a lovely weekend in this very characterful cottage, the property is as attractive from the inside as it is from the outside. The accommodation was very comfortable and provided everything we needed. The cottage was warm and cosy, the beds were comfortable and the kitchen and bathroom facilities were good. The cottage is well located for Stroud and surrounding areas. Just two things to be aware of when booking this property; the accommodation is over 4 floors so may not be suitable for anyone with limited mobility (it was fine for us!) and parking is not the easiest so you may need to park a short walk away. Overall a beautiful cottage and highly recommended!

A cosy and quiet cottage conveniently situated near the centre of a charming village. We found Walkley Wood Cottage last minute and were so glad we did. A friend and I attended a course at the Clayloft and the location of the cottage was ideal for the short drive. We were also able to walk into the village and try out two of the restaurants in the evening, it was a shame we didn’t have enough time for more! The rooms were clean and warm and despite staying through huge storm we both slept well. The kitchen seemed fully equipped although we only used it for breakfast. There are quite a few steps (it’s set over 4 floors) and there is a shower/bath so someone with mobility issues may struggle with the quirky design but this is all made clear in the listing. The owners have kindly provided many books, DVD’s and board games in the living room. We thoroughly enjoyed it and it completely suited our needs. Thank you.

Nice cottage set over 4 levels.
The cottage is neat and well presented.
Not recommended for people who don't like stairs as kitchen is in the basement, and bedrooms and bathroom are on second and third level with living room on ground floor. Main issue for me was being just over 6ft some of the ceilings and beams were low and I had to mind my head. Also the shower arrangement in the bath is not ideal, especially for tall people.
Otherwise it had all the things you need for a stay and there was good information packs etc.. from owner.
Parking is a bit haphazard on the narrow road so loading and unloading needs to be managed carefully.
Overall despite the weather we had a pleasant stay and would consider this location again if needed.

Very disappointing. The Cottage was dirty. The bed blankets seemed to be used. It was very cold inside the Cottage and we had to move to another accomodation.
Never again. Sorry.

This beautiful cottage is situated in an incredible area. Located on the side of a the valley in nailsworth it makes for great views and walks. The property is stunning with how old and homely it is. The house was tidy and presentable but perhaps could do with a proper deep clean. The kitchen had everything you would need which was really helpful though there weren’t any bathroom amenities such as shampoo or conditioner so make sure to bring your own and the same with the fire making utilities. All round lovely stay.

The dishwasher was unusable on the day we arrived but the owner arranged for a new one to be installed the same day. We thought that was very impressive and thoughtful.
We were a bit disappointed not to have the view from the house which is shown on the website.

Nice location, Shame about the cleanliness though

Stayed for 2 days. Appreciating it's an old property. That said, there were lots of woodlice some dead like in the cafetiere other live like on the bedside table and carpets and stairs. The underside of the shower ring was all rusty not pleasant to look at at head height when inside and the curtain wasn't hanging properly. Easy to fix and just needed a good clean. Dust in the front room on lamps and all of the sides and one of the party came away with feet with what look to be lots of bites on them, they were the only one who took their shoes off downstairs. Parking was a pain but that was advertised as such so can't complain at that. Space itself was fine for 4 and downstairs kitchen worked fine as a place to cook and eat, just didn't really want to go upstairs to the living room due to the dirt. Sadly wouldn't return.

Poor attention to cleanliness and condition especially of th3 bathroom. Be aware that this house is on 4 levels and requires lugging groceries down into the basement kitchen…not able to use the outside table and area as it was overgrown and messy.

Our first time to stay in a cottage and we enjoyed our weekend getaway. The cottage got everything we needed. Beds were all comfy; we slept really well. Love the interior and the beams. And we (especially our daughter) had fun playing with the games provided. Thanks a lot!

In my experience cleanness is the priority throughout the entire stay, the condition of the cottage is understandable old however the surfaces of interior is considered neglected, numbers of woodlice traveling around the house, we do not value the quality and money for the stay under this condition.
Additionally the shower curtain above the bath tub isn't generous enough for shower, quite narrow space while standing inside, I am very petit and this experience was not pleasant.

It was fine, but I wouldn't recommend.

Solid 3 (out of 5) star. Cottage itself is fine - good location from the town centre and bus station whilst still being away. Price is ok. Booking was easy and Bolthole was easy to contact for questions. The place does look like the pictures. The second bedroom easily fit two average sized adults. Good potential.

I can't recommend this place though, as it currently stands. I arrived to the property, dreading the thought of staying an entire week.

The most outstanding issue was cleanliness. If you suffer from moderate to heavy allergies to dust, just forget it. This place will make you wheeze, itch and cough beyond any antihistamines you can take. This is actually what made it tough for me to stay here throughout the week - we had to regularly open the windows when possible and make sure I went outside regularly for a break. The first night was the worst, where I wore a mask to bed, which helped. There was clear evidence that the property hadn't been properly cleaned and cleaned recently - maybe because there were no stays prior to our visit. You'd find mounts of rubble from the stone walls, dust everywhere, sticky counters.

Beyond cleanliness, there were daily annoyances that could be resolved with more thought and care - for example:
- The shower has a ring at the top to hold the shower curtain. There are probably better alternatives to this set-up (e.g. glass shower door mounted via the tub). This means that if you're taller than 5'7, you'll have a metal ring around your head as you shower, which is strange. The shower curtain it also too long so you'll be stepping on it constantly.
- The shower device ranges in temperature, varying 10 degrees at any given time. It's more consistent if you prefer a shower that is about 35 degrees. For me, I like super hot showers so probably less of an issue for some. The water pressure is low.
- The oven light didn't work (and if you shine a light into it, it's not very clean. I've seen worse in student dorms, but not what you'd expect with a cottage rental that is professionally managed).
- Kettle desperately needed a descaling and the dishwasher, a rinse aid.
- The welcome pack/book had outdated information (including the access code to the key) and references to information on pages that didn't exist.
- Chipped dishes, broken glass bits in the dishwasher, no pepper in the pepper mill, no dish sponge (just a worn out dish brush that had food stuck in it), worn out tea towels, bits stuck to the rugs, empty sugar jar that had a layer of sugar caked at the bottom, window detached and broken from window pane - it just doesn't feel or look nice.
- Parking expectations need to be clearer - it is a narrow road and you'll literally need to park at a steep angle on the bank. If you have a vehicle larger than a sedan, forget it.

In the end, we were happy to go home.

Even smaller and more tired than the charming photos suggest. We had realistic expectations and sadly they weren’t met this time.

Nice cottage and location and lots of potential but the decor and cleanliness was not up to scratch. Chesterfield sofa was filled with crumbs in the holes, dead wood lice all over the floor (and they had the cheek to ask us to remove our shoes ) not ideal for four adults but it could have been if you’d just buy a proper bed for the room with two singles instead of a camp bed… also don’t say dog friendly when the dogs were not allowed in half of the house or on your crumby sofa or allowed to poop in the yard

Bolthole Retreats replied more than 1 year ago
Thank you for your review. We are sorry you were disappointed with your stay. Unfortunately, woodlice are an unavoidable aspect of the countryside and they can be cleaned out one day but the odd ones do find their way back in. With regard to the beds, this is correct - the property is not ideal for 4 adults and we do state this in the description so you are aware before booking. We have always made it very clear as the second bedroom is a small room and ideal for one adult or 2 children. We do ask that dogs are kept downstairs and off furniture. These are fair and respectful rules to abide by.

Beds and bedding very comfortable. Clean and everything needed for our stay. Thank you for the pint of milk in fridge! Shame about the slightly damp smell in the kitchen. A bit dark, but you are in a cottage in the Cotswolds! We were aware it was on street parking, but not aware street was so narrow and parking would be so tricky. We had to park a distance from the property.

Pleasant cottage .. with everything you need. Lovely surrounding area and local walks. Visited Woodchester Park. Haresfield, Standish Wood and Cotswold water park to walk.
Things to take into account ...
The cottage has very low ceilings and doorways which are not great for tall people. Very small area at front of house with chair and table could do with a bit of TLC and weeding - no proper garden. Kitchen is down in what would have been cellar with winding stairway.
No parking at property which they state but really winding country lanes and a struggle to park as already full of parked cars. Makes loading and unloading a bit more tricky.
